The Reality of an Introduction

Imogene raced towards the girls’ locker room without looking back. Normally she would have stayed outside with her friends till the late bell rang and be late for her first period gym. But since she was caught gawking at the new kid, she didn’t feel like waiting around for anything else bad to happen to her before lunch.

After changing into her gym uniform, Imogene decided to spend this gym period beating the crap out of a punching bag. She needed something to take her frustration out on, and since she couldn’t beat her mother, Neil, or the new kid; the punching bag would have to suffice for now.

Imogene made her way to the punching bags in the fitness center of their gym and turned her iPod on. Nothing was going to stop her for beating the bag till it bled its own stuffing. Nada Surf’s ‘What Is Your Secret’ began to blast from her tiny green iPod as she started her assault on the inanimate victim.

Most people didn’t know how much misery Imogene held within her. The only person who truly understood her was Trinity, and even then Imogene still pretended to be fine even when she wasn’t. She had always hated to be the reason for other people’s worries.

As she repeated to strike at the black beaten faux leather bag, one of her favorite songs began to play; ‘Thanks For The Memories ’by Fall Out Boy. Just as she was getting into a decent rhythm she noticed Neil walking towards her. She cursed the day the gods decided give her and her step-brother the same first period. Imogene stopped her attack on the bag and yanked the tiny matching blue earphones from her ears to see what Neil wanted this time.

“Hey.” He said as he strolled up towards her. Neil was acting as if he was doing her a favor by ending her imaginary boredom. Imogene was getting fed up with this conversation quickly; couldn’t he see she was busy taking her aggressions out at the moment?

“Do you need you something Neil?” Imogene said while panting with beads of hot sweat running down her face. She wished her step-brother would just turn around and give up on his lame attempt of family bonding.

“I was just checking up on you. I saw what happened in the courtyard, was that kid giving you shit or something?” Neil held the punching bag, steadying it for the moment. Making Imogene wish she could start her assault again even more.

“He didn’t do anything and nothing happened, Neil. Can I now get back to what I was doing now?” Imogene knew he cared for her and was just watching out for his step-sister. However, she just wanted to be alone.

“Yeah.” Imogene noticed a small amount of sadness flicker within his dark amber eyes. “I’ll be waiting for you after school and don’t be late or I’m leaving without you.” Neil turned around quickly and left Imogene standing there dumbfounded by his abrupt rudeness.

After a moment of trying to figure out why Neil acted in such a way towards her. She placed her ear phones back into her ears; which where now blaring the sounds of Damien Rice to distract her from the events of the early morning.

After gym Imogene stayed late in the locker room to gather herself once again. While standing in front of the locker room mirror, Imogene carefully replaced her heart pendent around her neck. It was her most prized possession since her father had given it to her on her 10th birthday. She rarely went out of the house without it. Imogene’s father had disappeared 5 years ago and it still hurt like it was yesterday. Yet, no matter what, Imogene had loved her father and missed him deeply. However, she never let people see how much she still hurt inside.

The sound of the door slamming shut brought her out of her memories and back to fixing herself up for the rest of her school day. As Imogene stared into the mirror, now brushing her hair, she saw the new kid standing behind her. Surprised beyond belief, she whirled around to face him.

“Oh, shit! I didn’t mean to… there was no sign...I thought it was the guys…” Imogene was becoming slightly amused by his attempts at excuses and began to laugh. The new kid stood there faintly blushing and showing off a rather charming smirk. “You’re laughing at me, great. First day and a girl is laughing at me already.” Imogene, while still laughing, watched him saunter towards her with his hands in his pockets. She watched as his scruffy cocoa hair began to fall into his striking baby blue eyes. Imogene also noticed how tall he really was; defiantly a good 8 or so inches taller than her. Also she saw how nicely his jeans fit his slightly athletic physique and his off-white La Rocca t-shirt. Imogene started to blush realizing she was, once again, checking out the new kid; only this time much closer.

“Yeah, umm, the guys’ locker room is the door on the left.” Imogene then quickly turned back around to the mirror and began to brush her chemically blonde hair again.

“Thanks.” The new kid said in a completely melt-able tone along with a smile to kill. All Imogene could do was nod and try to look away, which wasn’t working too well for her. While secretly watching him as he walked away from her and towards the door she heard him speak up. “Ben.”

“Excuse me?” Imogene held her hairbrush still in the air.

“My name, it’s Ben. Ben Spektor.” He said, also allowing Imogene to notice that he wasn’t about to leave without being given her name in return.

“Imogene.” This caused Ben to turn around and face Imogene in the mirror.

“Thanks for the help, Imogene.” Ben smiled his now patented smile and walked out of the girl’s locker room. Imogene finally let out a breath she hadn’t known she was holding, then quickly gathered her things and rushed to her second period class.
