*****Part III ******
14 years later
The party was fantastic. People were talking and laughing even the music was good. James his best friend for more than ten years had told him about it just this morning at school and he had begged and pleaded his mother to let him go, but it was definitely worth it, because most of his friends were here.
He smiled happily. Every year again James‘ parents drove for exactly one weekend into the mountains without their kids. And every year they had brought James and his little sister Victoria to their grandparents but not this year. Some weeks ago Mrs. Harrison, James mother had told his own mother how proud she was about her kids that she could trust them blindly.
At the same evening his mother had hugged him and had told him that she would never let him stay alone in her house for more than one night till he had his own children and would know that one could never trust them completely. His father who had stood behind them laughed warmly about his son‘s puzzled expression. Sometimes his parents were a real mystery. He still wondered why his mother had let him go on this party.
Sometimes she was more than just protective. She loved him dearly just as much as he loved his parents, but sometimes it was too cramped for his taste. He was almost 18 and still he needed her permission for almost everything.
„Hey bro, nice party isn‘t it?“ James asked his friend while he swung his arm around his shoulder and interrupted his thoughts. „Yes it is. And your sister seems to be really amused as well.“ he answered and pointed in the direction of the sofas where a girl was wildly kissing her boyfriend. The hands of the two of them weren‘t even visible anymore.
James looked back to his friend with a disgusted expression on his face. „God.. That‘s so annoying. She is 15. Just a little kid.“
„Oh come on. I know a boy who spend most of his 15th year of life on the backseats of the cars from girls he didn‘t even know.“ he answered gloating. „Ok ok let‘s change the topic. Where is Matt?“ James asked his friend with a sheepish smile on his lips.
„Getting us something to drink.“ he answered in a flat voice.
„Oh, I see. Still no luck, eh?“ James asked.
„No“ he acknowledged in a low voice.
„Maybe he is just shy? Just let him drink some beers and some other things and he will be all yours. Believe me. I can feel it. Tonight is your night.“ he tried to cheer him up.
„I don‘t know. I mean do I look that bad. I throw myself upon him all the time and he is always telling me that he wants to wait. He is 22. Every other guy at his age is a real sex monster but he…Why doesn‘t he want me, Jamie?“ he asked with a desperate expression on his face.
„I would lay you if I were gay.“ James smiled at him and his friend smiled back happily . „Yeah… You‘re a real friend!“ he responded and hugged James tightly.
„Hey! Take your hands off of my boyfriend, James Harrison.“ Matt appeared with a bright smile on his face. „You‘re the boss Mattie. Ok have a nice evening boys.“ James remarked and disappeared into the crowd.
„Here, your coke.“ Matt pushed the glass into his boyfriend‘s hand. „Oh come on. I‘m not a little baby… give me some of your beer.“ he protested and tried to get the bottle from his lovers hand.
„No.. you‘re still too young. Your parents hate me anyway. I‘ve you are coming home drunk the y will never allow me to see you again. Is it that what you want?
„No!“ he answered biting his lower lip.
„I promise no alcohol, but lets dance!“ he smiled again when he saw the eyes of his lover role back in his head. He loved dancing. It was the best way to loose some of his energy. „If you give me one coke after the other you need to bleed for that. Come on…I am so awake I need some movement. I love caffeine.“ he yelled when he grabbed the hand of his lover and dragged him to the dance floor.
The first dance was a fast one but suddenly the rhythm slowed down when the song „Chasing Cars“ from Snow Patrol was played. He took the chance to guide the hands of his lover to his hips to dace body against body.
His blue eyes glanced impishly up into the blue once of the man in front of him who leaned down to kiss him passionately. „Tonight… the boy whispered when his hands went up the back of his lover who shivered slightly.
„We will see.“ Matt answered with a hoarse voice. After a while the song was over and his lover excused himself to take a piss.
„Could you hold my beer till I come back, but don‘t dare to drink something? I will smell it.“ he smirked and turned around, heading to the crowd in front of the toilet door.
When he heard the doorbell ring he turned around to see James open the main door. The new intruders were two police officers that meant trouble.
„Ok kids, the party is over. Some neighbours called us. The music is too loud!“ one of them shouted. The other walked to the stereo system. After he turned around again he found a boy who looked much younger than 21 with a bottle of beer in his hands.
„See what we have here. Can you show me your passport, kiddo?“ he asked the suddenly pale boy.
„Noo…Officer… it‘s not what it looks like… it‘s not mine... I... I‘m just holding it till my friend comes back…“ he tried to explain after he recognised the beer in his hands. „No, kiddo! It is never what it looks like.“ the officer laughed when he grabbed the boy‘s upper arm to guide him out of the house to his car.
„Let‘s see if your parents will believe you. We will drive you and some of your little friends to the precinct.“
One last time he turned around and tried to find his lover, but it seemed that he was right now at this moment in the toilet and probably didn’t even know what happened outside.
***********
„Ok boy, I called your mother and if I were you I would hide or kill some of your friends in here so I don‘t have to go back for the next 50 years. And if I were you I would hurry because…“
„Jared Alexander Franklin Anderson!“ The police officer was interrupted by a screaming woman, which stormed right through the precinct and parted the people in the room in two groups to get out of her way. Jared‘s eyes widened in horror. „I‘m dead!“ he whispered his eyes fixed on the face of his mother.
„Yes I think you are!“ the cop answered staring in the same direction like the boy next to him.
„I can‘t believe that I need to come here in the middle of the night to get my minor son out of an precinct because he is a damn alcoholic.“ she still yelled in his direction and stopped right in front of him. „Oh mum, I‘m not an alcoholic. Please calm down!“ Jared whispered almost noiseless.
„Calm down? You just tell me to calm down? Don‘t dare telling me what to do. Did you hear this, Walter?“ she looked at her husband who approached behind his wife. People behind them were still glancing in there direction but Lydia ignored them all and just looked at the boy in front of her who looked suddenly smaller than a thimble.
Jared didn‘t dare to look her in the eyes but stared constantly on his hands.
„How could you misuse my trust like that? I gave you my approval to go to this party and the first thing you do is to get drunk…“
„But mum I didn‘t…“ he interrupted her.
„Don‘t interrupt me while I am talking to you, little boy!“ she cut him off again. „I can‘t believe you do this to me! You will stay at home for the next ten years.,“ she roared in an almost demonic voice.
„But mum…“ Jared started again, but was stopped by his still furious mother.
„No buts! We will talk about this at home.“ she told him. „Officer, when can we take him with us?“ Lydia asked the intimidated officer.
„Amh… The whole thing wasn‘t that bad, you just need to sign some forms at my colleague over there and then the three of you can go home again.“
Without another word she walked in the direction the officer showed her to go. The man behind the counter looked almost afraid when the redheaded woman came in his direction.
It was not the first time that he needed to handle with angry parents but this woman was almost scary. And the way her husband behaved, told more than a thousand words could say. He slowly followed her and looked at everyone with an apologetic smile on his lips.
„I want to sign the discharge papers for my son Jared Alexander Franklin Anderson, officer.„ she told him calmly.
„Yes of course ma‘am. You and the father of the boy need to sign here and here,“ he explained and pointed on the lines on the paper in front of them.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson both didn‘t say a word while they wrote down there names. „Is this everything, sir?“ Lydia asked and looked up again.
„Yes that‘s everything. Thank you.“ the officer took back the forms and put them back into his folder. „You can take him home now.“ He didn‘t dare to tell her to look at her son a little bit better the next time she let him go out. Something in his head told him that this boy wouldn‘t see the daylight for a long time.
Again Lydia stormed through the precinct letting everyone in there give her room to walk straight to the door. Followed by her son and husband.
None of them saw one of there colleagues standing in a corner. His face almost white and eyes wide open like he had seen a ghost. The files he had carried lay on the floor and his hands were shaking.
******
The ride back home was more than scary. Jared‘s mother hadn‘t said a word. Normally she would grumble the whole time and his father would tell her again and again to calm down. But now his parents were sitting on the front seats and no one was talking.
Jared‘s father sat on the drivers seat and looked constantly out of the window. At first, his mother had wanted to drive them home but Walter had contradicted his still furious wife and took the keys out of her hands.
It wasn‘t typical for Lydia to give up that fast. Jared hoped it was just because it was still in the middle of the night, but a voice in his head told him it wasn‘t the real reason.
She was disappointed. And the knowledge that it was his entire fault made him sick. Even if it wasn‘t his fault it made his conscience eat him up alive.
Jared knew it was just the silence before the thunder. Twenty minutes passed till they arrived the driveway. His mother almost jumped out of the car and stormed to the main entrance of their house.
Back in the car, father and son were still sitting in the car in silence. Walter observed his son through the rear-view mirror while Jared looked out of the window totally lost in thoughts.
„Come on, son. Maybe it will not be that bad. Get it over with.“ his father’s voice brought him back to reality.
„Yeah…right… Do you remember when I was ten and one of my teachers called her because I hit this boy… I think Todd was his name, because I wanted to play with his game boy and he wont let me.“ Jared asked. Looking back in his father‘s eyes through the mirror.
Walter stayed silent for a moment, and then answered. „Yes… How could I forget about it? We needed to cancel our holiday plans for Hawaii because she gave you house arrest so we needed to stay at home.“ Walter said remembering that scenario like it had been yesterday.
Lydia was always consequent even if it meant a punishment for the whole family. And now that she needed to take her son home from a precinct in the middle of the night because he drank alcohol, he simply did not want to continue this thought.
„Why did you drink alcohol? Even if the police hadn‘t called us you know she would have smelled it.“ he asked his son.
„I didn‘t drink alcohol. You must believe me, dad! I was just holding the beer for… for a friend.“ Jared stopped himself from telling his father that it had been Matt‘s beer and therefore it could be some kind of Matt‘s fault - in the eyes of his father - that the police took his son with them.
For Jared‘s parents it had never been a problem to accept the fact of their son being gay. The real problem for Walter was the guy his only son was in love with: Matthew Hanson. He had never liked him and possibly never would.
Walter was the owner of a music store and it had always been his dream that his only son would one day follow his footsteps. But Jared had never shown any interest, until that day Matt started working for him.
Since Matt‘s arrival, he could barely get Jared out of the store. He knew very well that the two of them were more than just good friends. The way they were looking at each other said more than a thousand words.
Jared was always talking about everything to his parents but he never told them anything about his relationship with Matt. He hadn‘t even told them he had a relationship with Matt even if it was sometimes more then evident for everyone around them. This was certainly the main reason why he disliked the boy so much. He was simply jealous about the influence he had on his son.
„Yes of cause. When I was in your age I did hold the bear of my friends all the time, too.“ his father argued.
„But dad. It‘s the truth! Why don‘t you believe me? You can take a fucking blood test if my word is not enough for you.“ Jared‘s voice was getting louder.
„Don‘t talk to me like that, young boy! However, it‘s ok, I believe you and now lets go in. I fear mum is already waiting.“ Jared just nodded his head and got out of the car. Following his father into the house.
They found Lydia standing in the kitchen, doing something with the mixer. There were eggs, milk and flour standing on the desk. „What are you doing, sweetheart?“ Walter asked her.
„What does it looks like? I‘m baking a cake.“ she mumbled, wildly working on the batter. „But honey… it 2 am… let‘s go back to bed and talk tomorrow.“ He tried to move her away from her work but she pushed him away.
„No. I will finish what I have started. Walter could you asked your son to give me the butter.“ she asked ignoring Jared completely who just stood some feet next to her.
„Oh mum. Come on talk to me.“ Jared begged.
„I‘m not talking with you right now! I‘m too angry. Go to bed Jared Alexander. Your father is right, we will talk tomorrow.“ she answered in a calm voice while she was hitting the batter.
Jared looked with pleading eyes into the corner his father was standing. He hated to be call like that, because it never meant something good when she used his middle name. His father just shrugged his shoulders and motioned for him to go upstairs into his room.
„Good night dad, good night mama I love you.“ Jared said in a low voice and left the kitchen with hanging head and shoulders.
Walter walked carefully to his wife and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek and a warm embrace. „Lets go upstairs, honey.“ Lydia stopped killing the lump imaginary and leaned her head against her husband‘s shoulder, her eyes tightly shut.
„I‘m very angry at him!“ Lydia said, still held by Walter‘s arms.
„I know, sweetheart!“ he answered with a smile on his face. Knowing very well what his son‘s last words had done to his wife.
„He will be punished for this behaviour.“ she continued.
„Yes, honey.“ he answered, still smiling.
„I will not forgive him just because he called me „mommy„ .“ she said in a faked angry voice.
„Of cause, darling.“
„Ok let‘s go back to bed. And I am still angry.“
Walter leaned down one more time to give her another kiss. Than he released her, taking her by the hand to guide her into their chamber.
***********
- The next morning -
„Good morning mum and dad! I already made breakfast.“ A smiling Jared welcomed his sleepy parents. He hoped that the puzzled expressions in their faces were a good sign.
„Oh, son. That‘s wonderful. When did you stand up this morning?“ his father asked while sitting down in his chair taking the newspaper from his plate.
„At 6 or 7 am I‘m not sure. Does somebody want a toast?“ he asked his parents with a bright smile.
„Yes please.“ his father answered already reading the news and balancing the cup with hot coffee to his mouth. „And you, honey? Don‘t you want any toast?“ Walter requested.
„Yes of course. And tell your son that some breakfast will not rescue him from home arrest and other horrible things I will think about later. Could you give me the cheese please, darling?“ she answered with a devilish smile on her lips.
Father and son looked into each other‘s eyes. Jared‘s last hopes were fading that his mother could have probably forgotten the whole affair from the last night. So, he turned around to take the now gold brown toasts and sat down in his chair. Waiting for the judgment and hoped for the best.
Everything seemed to be perfect except the facts that Jared‘s mother was still not talking to him and that he couldn‘t shrug off the feeling of fear of the unknown danger called his mother.
Jared had just finished his last sip of tea when suddenly the doorbell rang. Jared jumped up to hurry to the door, but his mother called him back. „Stop! No civil contact until we talked about your punishment. Go back and sit down again. I will go and see who it is.“ Lydia said in a severe tone.
Jared just sighed and walked back into the kitchen like his mother had told him to, while she walked instead of him towards the door.
Walter continued reading the newspaper as if nothing had happened.
Jared took an apple and started munching it.
When he saw his father hidden behind the paper, he took some inconspicuous steps towards the door of the kitchen to get a better view to the main entrance to see who was the stranger in front of his mother.
It was a man maybe 30 years old with short brown hair. He also had brown eyes and beard. Jared had the feeling to know this face from somewhere but he couldn‘t remember why. Maybe if I find out what they are talking about, he thought and creped a little bit further.
He hid himself behind the steps from where he could get he better view of the entrance and the stranger; he also could possibly hear what they were talking about. So he tiptoed quickly toward the stairs when he could be sure that no one could catch him.
„Good morning Mrs. Anderson. I‘m sorry to disturb your morning activities and I actually don‘t even know where to start talking but… but at first let me introduce myself… my name is Charlie… Charlie Franklin and I think you are the mother of my little brother Jared.“, the stranger shuddered and exhaled sharply after he had finished his sentence.
Lydia just stood in front of him, eyes wide open, not knowing what exactly had happened. „I fear you‘re wrong informed. We are the wrong family for jokes like that.“ she said after a long moment of silence. Before the guy opposite her could say another word Lydia tried to shut the door again but found the foot of the stranger blocking the way.
„Please, sir. Step back or else I need to call the police.“ Lydia tried to threaten him. But without any success.
„I am the police, ma‘am. Please, Just let me try to explain the situation. I…“ Charlie started but was suddenly interrupted by a yelling man in the back of the house.
„Jared! Come back into the kitchen. You already have enough problems to…“ Walter stopped his movements to the door of the kitchen when he saw his pale face.
Lydia turned around to find her son violently shaking with tears in his shocked blue eyes. He was looking right into the face of the stranger who had just took the chance to push the door open again.
„What‘s wrong? What happened?“ Walter asked looking questionably to his wife who looked just as shocked as her son. Even the stranger in the doorframe looked like he had seen a ghost.
„Ch… Charlie?“ Jared whispered in disbelieve. „That‘s not possible…“ he suddenly screamed going some steps back. Abruptly he turned around and started running out of the backdoor. Not reacting to the cries of his mother or the shouting of his father and the stranger.
