Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Lucas pulled his truck up in front of the nice looking house. Coach Kelton had given them each a piece of paper with his cell phone number, his home number and his address if they ever needed him for something. He had pulled out the piece of paper from his gear bag and stuffed it in his pocket as he had made his way out the door. He had had a few errands he had to run, but he had tried to make them as short as possible. His heart was racing as he saw Blake’s figure through the windows. His old truck must have caught Blake’s eye because Blake looked through the window at him and smiled.
Mrs. Kelton opened up the door and waved him up to the house with a warm smile. He unbuckled his seat belt with shaky hands. Anyone could have told that he was nervous. But they wouldn’t have been able to tell why. An odd feeling ran through his body, it was like he was meeting the parents of his lover, awaiting the third degree. Walking up to the house, he made himself appear calm and collect.
Mrs. Kelton opened up the door further and moved aside so that he could enter the warm house. Lucas noticed there was a homely, cozy, loving feeling to it. The warmth of the heater and the smell of fresh cookies hit him as soon as he stepped in through the door. He noticed that Blake was no longer in the living room and started to let his eyes wander in his curiosity of Blake’s location. “He’s just getting a sweater.” Mrs. Kelton told him as she sat down on the couch. “You have a nice home, Mrs. Kelton.” He told her politely. This was his mom’s doctor, and he wasn’t sure what conversation to start up.
Mrs. Kelton let out a hearty laugh. “Please Lucas, call me Jenna. Being called Mrs. Kelton makes me sound so old and like my mother-in-law.” She told him with amusement in her voice. She had heard her husband go on and on about this boy and she had figured that he would be a cocky jock who thought that he didn’t need the rest of the football team to win. But after hearing Blake’s side of things and his prospective on the star player, she had begun to doubt the image that her brain had pictured of him. And now that she had met him face to face she could tell that the image in her brain had been totally off.
Blake entered the room and saw that there was no tense tension in the air like some other people had when they came into his house and were alone in a room with one of his parents. But considering that this was his mom and not his dad he had had doubts that there would be any problems. He gave his mom a smile as he headed towards the door, Lucas behind him. After his mom gave him the routine talk about being out too late or being careful, they were out in Lucas’ truck and on their way to the movies.
The movie theatre wasn’t packed like one might think for a weekend night. They parked and headed up and looked at the selection of movies. They had a horror movie out, three romance comedies, and two romances. Lucas wasn’t too impressed by the movie selection, but looked over and saw that Blake was looking at the descriptions for both the romances and the romance comedies. But the one that really caught his eye was Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightly. “Have you ever seen Pride & Prejudice?” Lucas asked him. Blake turned his violet eyes to Lucas’ brown ones. Then he shook his head no and turned his attention else where.
Making up his mind, Lucas bought two tickets to see Pride & Prejudice and then bought two sodas. He tried to think of what candy Blake might like, and then he remembered seeing sour gummie worms on his desk earlier that day. After buying a package of sour gummie worms, they headed into the movie. The settled into some seats near the middle of the theatre and settled down and waited for the commercials to start. Lucas passed the package of sour gummie worms and even in the dark, saw Blake’s smile.
The movie was actually good, in Lucas’ opinion. And he wasn’t one for romances. Every so often he would glance over at Blake and watched his entranced face. Blake was paying so much attention to the movie that he almost forgot about the gummie worms; almost. Once the credits were rolling, they headed out and decided on a dinner near the theatre where they could get a burger. They sat in a booth near a window and talked about small things until the waitress came by.
Lucas found the things Blake told him about New York fascinating. It was such a big city that, a small farm boy like him, had never thought of ever going into a territory that was unusual to him. “They have the best restaurants and they have huge malls and shops all along the streets. You can just walk into a McDonalds and eat it on your way to where ever you’re going. There are millions of McDonalds in New York. It’s an amazing city. And it’s just beautiful at sunset and at night. At night is really when the city comes alive for the parties and fun. During the day is all business and at night is all fun and parties.” Blake told him with a huge grin on his face.
It didn’t take a genius that Blake absolutely loved big cities. But there wasn’t a big city around for miles. There were all little towns around in these parts. You would have to travel for days just to get to a medium sized city, let a lone a big city. Lucas watched as Blake’s eyes lit up at mentioning all of the shops and food of New York. “So what do you plan on doing after school?” Blake asked him. Lucas blinked; he honestly hadn’t been paying attention to the conversation but to Blake’s body. His lively eyes, his wonderful smile, the way his long, black lashes accented his cheekbones and the way his hair framed his face wonderfully. Shaking his head he knew Blake was waiting for an answer. “I’m not sure. Go off and try and play college football, try and get into the pros. I never gave it much thought.” Lucas admitted. Blake blinked at him and then scrunched up his nose as if trying to decided if he should ask whatever it was that was on his mind. Finally he decided to ask. “Is that all you ever think about? Football? That’s what my dad and brother think about all the time. It’s like with every play, with every call, their brain cells die off and all they know anymore is football this and football that. Is it really that important?” Blake asked sadness evident in his eyes.
Lucas was taken back for a moment. No one had ever asked that question before. But now that he actually thought about it, Blake did have a point. But it just seemed like it was all he was good at. “You’ve got so much more that you could do. Your brain has not totally turned to mush and football is the only thing you can focus on.” Blake told him, as if reading his mind. “What do you really want in life?” Blake asked him. It was like that boy could see deep into your soul and ask you things that shook the very foundation that steadied your world. But before Lucas could answer Blake, a bunch of the guys from the football team came in through the dinner door.
Lucas hoped that they wouldn’t see him or Blake sitting at the booth. It wasn’t like Lucas was afraid of them, by no means was he. But it would be bad news and bad rumors for Blake if they did see them. But Lucas’ prayer went unanswered. Jimi, one of the substitute receivers saw them and smirked as he headed over to their booth. The other boys hadn’t noticed as they chatted up some of the cheerleaders at another table across the room.
Jimi was an arrogant prick in Lucas’ opinion. He didn’t know his place and was constantly telling everyone that he could easily be Quarter Back and team captain and was constantly challenging Lucas. Soon Jimi was at their table and grinning at them with ill intention in mind. “So what brings the star player to a low dinner like this? And who is this you have here? The Coach’s son? Now Lucas, you wouldn’t be trying to seduce the Coach’s son to try and secure your place as team leader just in case there was someone that might be able to take your place now is there?” Jimi asked with wicked amusement lingering in his voice. “If he were, I’m sure that it wouldn’t be you that he was concerned about.” Blake bit out.
Lucas couldn’t smother the laugh quick enough, as Jimi sent a hatful glare in Blake’s direction. Blake could definitely hold his own against Jimi and it looked like Blake wasn’t backing down. “And what would you know, you little whore?” Jimi asked, his anger starting to get the better of him. Blake gave him an innocent smile and then sent a look to Lucas that clear stated: I’m up to no good. “Oh, nothing; just maybe the little fact that you would never have even the slightest chance at taking Lucas’ spot on the team. But don’t worry, I’m sure when you’re picking up garbage off the street for a living, you can do everyone a favor and pick yourself up as well.” Blake said with a bright smile. Jimi’s face was now beet red with anger. “Listen here you little...” But he didn’t get too far as Lucas stood up from his seat. “Jimi, accept defeat now and your ego won’t be damaged as much as it already is.” Lucas told him with a warning ringing in his voice. Jimi sent a glare to both Lucas and Blake and then huffed out of the restaurant.
Lucas couldn’t contain his laughter as he watched the arrogant prick walk in a huff down the street. Blake was laughing so hard that there were tears in his eyes. Once they had calmed down, Lucas paid the bill and they headed to his truck. It was silent in the truck, but not an uncomfortable silence. They were simply enjoying each other’s presence and really had nothing important or interesting to say. The truck pulled in front of the house again. Blake looked at it and suddenly felt loneliness wash over him as the thought of not seeing Lucas again until school started up on Tuesday since they had a holiday on Monday.
At just the right moment, Blake leaned over to pick up his sweater from the floor and when he came up, Lucas’ head was close to his and Blake could feel the older boy’s breath on his face. Then a calloused hand came and caressed his face gently. Blake could feel his eyes close slowly as he focused on just the feeling of Lucas’ breath and hand on his face. Then he felt the soft press of lips against his. Blake was surprised at first, but that was soon drowning by a warm sensation that spread all across his body. The kiss that was once chaste and timid was now becoming wild, frantic, and almost primal. Blake found himself scared yet turned on by this new side of Lucas. A soft tongue came and ran across Blake’s lower lip, almost begging for entrance to his hot cavern. Which Blake willingly granted.
Lucas was so lost in the kiss until a thought ran through his head, halting the passion that he was feeling. He pulled away from Blake and looked at the flushed boy. Lids half way open and his cheeks flushed, he looked adorable. But Blake’s senses came rushing back to him. He looked around the truck cab like a deer in the headlights. He didn’t even bother to grab his sweater as he rushed out of the truck. He ran up to the house and then opened the door and rushed straight to his room without even saying anything to his mom.
Slamming the door to his room, Blake leaned against it to try and gain some support and try and wrap his mind around what had happened. He slid to the floor as his legs gave out. Tears came to his eyes as he thought of all promise of befriending Lucas Bonn were now gone. He had only been in this town a little over a week and he had already messed up any chances he might have had. The tears began to fall freely; the tears of sadness, loneliness, and despair. He could feel his heart begin to break all over again.
