Chapter Three
“Charlotte,” the next words he heard were not the expected ones, at least on D’s side, Charle knew exactly what was going to be said. “Why can’t you think before you act? You knew that I have dinner guests coming, I can’t stay here all night with you!” The mother then shook her head as D looked uncomfortable. “Why can’t you do as you are told? If you had of just got the things on the grocery list then left none of this would have happened!!”
The mother sighed dramatically then left the room to stand in the doorway, blocking D’s planned escape route as he felt that it was time for him to leave. She stood there watching the other patients and nurses walk the halls, virtually ignoring her daughter.
“Look, where are you car keys? Benjamin can drive the car home.” Her father said and before she could answer he started going through her pockets of her jacket on the nightstand, then her mother came back in.
“Did you even get the groceries I asked you to?” She asked sternly, when Charle nodded it sent her mother into another tizzy. “Oh god, they’re probably gone bad by now! We have to get them home!! Charle why can’t you ever be responsible?” She left the room and her Father looked at D.
“Oh good, you do have someone to stay with you for the night. We’ll go then.” He left with her car keys, but the Teen stayed behind a little longer, shifting slightly from foot to foot. He had messy black hair and wore a black t-shirt with fairly tight jeans, his eyes were a brilliant blue and he was wearing a few chains.
“You ok sis?” He asked looking at her, just as uncomfortable as D about his parents outburst. Charle smiled at him and nodded.
“I’m fine Benji.” Her father poked his head around the door and looked at Benjamin.
“Hurry up, we have to go get the Groceries!” Benjamin nodded and gave a wave to his sister as he left. Charle flopped back on the bed and sighed deeply. Looking emotionally drained from her mother’s outburst.
“I guess you’re stuck with me.” She looked over at D and noticed him fidgeting with the corner of his jacket. “You know, you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to. I can call one of my friends.” She looked down at the sheets and picked off fuzz that wasn’t there. “You probably have better things to do.” She mumbled as an afterthought, used to being shunned by her family and expected it from this stranger.
“Nah, I don’t have anything better to do.” A sudden thought came to D. “My bike!! I think I left the keys on it.” D franticly searched through his many pockets for the motorcycles keys, when he found them he let out a sigh. “Oh good, I didn’t leave them with the bike. Now I can sleep without any worries.” He smiled lopsidedly at her.
“Um…” Charle looked at him, and was about to remind him that he was here to keep her awake all night when it looked like it dawned on him he looked completely apologetic.
“Right, can’t sleep…” He stood up and brushed his pants off. “Looks like I’m going to have to get some coffee… lots of coffee…” It was on the tip of her tongue to tell him that he didn’t need any more coffee but he left the room.
It took D a few moments to find the cafeteria; he got the coffee and started to head back to the wing where Charle was. By the time he was nearing the door, and after getting lost a few times the coffee was beginning to get a little cold. He looked around the halls quickly, seeing no one was there at the moment he held his hand out and a small warm flame appeared in his hand, not even noticing the heat in his hand. He heated the coffee up quickly then extinguished the flame before entering the room.
D settled himself back into the chair, and took a large drink of the steaming hot coffee; nearly half of it was gone after that one gulp.
“So… lets see,” he ran his hand through his hair causing his bangs to go over his head and down his back, making him look like he had long hair. “What would be considered polite conversation in a situation like this…I KNOW, how old are you? That’s always a good place to start.” He downed the rest of his coffee, jumped out of the chair and tossed the cup towards the trash can on the other side of the bed, it hit the rim and fell onto the floor, he walked over and put it in, not noticing the fact that in all the ‘excitement’ he had accidentally caught his cup on fire.
Charle sniffed the air and looked around, frowning slightly. “I’m seventeen…” She looked around the room again, a confused look on her face. “Is… Is something burning?” D stood up straight in a sudden movement.
“I’m not sure…” He looked around, a suspicious tone in his voice. “So your age sucks…” She gave him a curious look. “Well you see, I’m 20 and your really hot. But your underage…” She gave him a blank look for a moment then smiled.
“Well, I’m going to be turning 18 in August and it’s June now.” She stated in a matter of fact way. He smiled brightly at her then looked down trodden for a moment.
“Awe, that sucks, I’ll have to wait.” Charle looked at him and smiled a thought came to mind and she voiced it almost instantly.
“What they don’t know can’t hurt them!” She said in a bubbly tone with a slight chuckle.
“Your strange.” D said in a tone that almost said ‘I’m scared of you’ with an equally suspicious look. “ I like you!” he said with a bright bubbly tone, with that charming lopsided grin. Charle laughed at him and smiled.
“We’ll. I like you too!” She said then sniffed the air again. “I swear, something is burning…” She looked around the room again trying to find the source.
“Hey! Look over there! I think your mom is back!!” Charle quickly looked back at the door, terrified, while D put the fire out in the trashcan that he had accidentally started.
“D… No one is there you liar!” She said turning around just in time to see his foot in the trashcan and him smiling sheepishly, smoke rising from the can. D put his hand on the back of his head and chuckled in embarrassment.
“Oops, my bad!” Charle looked down at the foot in the garbage and an awkward silence came over the room. The doctor then chose that moment to come in to check on Charle, He looked at D with his foot in the trashcan.
“Are you ok sir?” the doctor asked him approaching him. D backed up, tripping over the trashcan and hitting his head on the wall.
“Y-Yeah... I’m fine, y-yeahh... I’m fine... Just... Don’t touch me!!” D said nervously continuing backing up, even though he already had his back against him. The doctor shook his head and turned back to Charle.
“Looks like your fine then, I’ll come back in a few hours.” The doctor gave D a look that bluntly said that he thought D should be in the nut house, and left.
