Chapter 2- Life-long Purpose
New chapter up! Not gonna go with my two little lovebirds yet... We'll get to them! Just wait!
Chapter 2
The starry sky streached onward, not a cloud in sight to block these heavenly bodies from casting thier eternal glow onto the world. A lone figure stood in the plains watching these celestial bodies. His heart seemed to ache watching these things. He wore a plain white shirt and tan pants, yet chose not to wear any footgear, letting the blades of grass rub against his feet. The calm and quiet around him was broken slightly by the sound of a sole voice.
"Midas, are you out here again?"
Midas turned. Indeed he had changed somewhat. A few years of traveling the world around did that to a person. He had abandoned his mystic scarf and dark clothes for these lighter ones. He still kept his pendant, a mysterious object that seemed to radiate a dark aura when he held it. Yet it was put away now, and it's light faded. Midas faced the newcomer, who had walked from the general direction of a house far off into the distance. The light from that home shone out, a becon in the night.
The person who called was a young woman, wearing a dark-blue nightgown that seemed to blend perfectly in the night around her. She too was barefoot walking over to meet him. "I should have known you'd be here Midas. You always liked to come here to think." She walked over next to him as he looked to her, before returning his attention to the stars. "So, why are you here tonight?"
"Just thinking. But maybe you should go back inside before you catch a cold."
"I came out here in the first place because I was worried about you. You've been a little spaced out ever since you got back."
It was true, Midas was really starting to let this affect him. Centuries ago he had come to set into motion , a plan to free his master from the abyss that was his prison. A void sealed on the other side of what was known as the Dark Gate. Yet his time here changed him, making him regret his actions. His master wished this world, so full of life, to be empty and soulless like himself. Midas could never forgive himself if he let it happen.
Then, 6 years ago, everything changed. A human who questioned things about his own past set off on a journey. Midas saw in him the potiental to not only avenge his father who was so brutally killed by a demon, but the power to stop the Pact of Seven, a group of seven demons whose sole purpose was the opening of the Dark Gate. Befriending him, he helpped guide this man to the Gate, where he and his companions had sealed away his master once more. And Midas was still here in this world, instead of being trapped back into that void he had grown to hate.
Now, wandering this world, he wished to see what humans saw, feel what they feel. He wanted everything his master could never have, and thus was the cause of his hatred for this world. Yet somewhere along the line, he began to once again question himself. He wondered why he was spared his fate from the void.
"Midas, are you listening to me?" Midas seemed surprised to being spoken to, and looked again to the woman who was with him. "There you go again... come on, let's go."
Midas nodded and followed her. Little under 5 years ago, he had met her and her father. They were under attack from a rouge demon, who sought to take away the innocence of this beauty that now led the way to the home in the distance. Midas quickly and easily dispatched of it, earning forever their trust and friendship. Since then they had opened thier home to him, and from time to time, he would come here to rest himself. It was better then sleeping on the ground or in random inns from time to time.
Midas was once again visiting, and though he was staying a few days, he still felt as though he were intruding. He was searching for his purpose, his reason for living. Almost every night it seemed, he would gaze at the stars wondering why he was still here, why he wasn't back in that void. He was eternally thankful for it, yet he still didn't understand what it was about.
"Elsa, are you... why do you live?"
The woman, Elsa, looked back to him in wonder. She seemed to think for a minute, as if trying to remember something on the edge of her memory. "Well... my mother once said that who we are is who we wish to be."
"And what about you?"
"I believe her. I think we all can choose who we want to be." Midas sighed, thinking it all over. He seemed worried about something, yet it was completely unrelated to what was happening. "Midas, your leaving again, aren't you." Midas stopped walking and noticed she had stopped as well. It wasn't a question, it was a statement.
"Yes Elsa. I've had this strange feeling for some time now... I think it's time I acted upon it. I can't let it go unnoticed forever." Midas seemed confident about it, but he hadn't realized that he was also giving her advice of sorts.
"Yes... feelings shoudn't ever go unnoticed forever." With that, Elsa reached foward and kissed him. The first contact of thier lips forced a sea of unknown emotions to rise up in Midas. The rage of feelings washing against his heart made it want to swell and burst, all from a simple contact of thier lips. Midas had seen horrible things. He had been to places he'd rather forget existed. His heart, so full of darkness, feared little to nothing. Yet this kiss seemed to blow it all away in one fell swoop.
They parted briefly, both of them very much red in the face, the night hiding it well. Midas was breathing heavily now, his heart seemingly weighted much more heavily on him. Something in that kiss had grown in him. "Please Midas... I want you to... take me." She whispered the last words to him, yet his eyes widened at what he heard. She couldn't be serious... could she!?
"Elsa... what your saying... please be reasonable. What about your father? He trusts me and-" But the rest of his words were cut with another kiss. Once more feelings unknown to him rushed up, washing away his doubt.
"I'm a grown woman Midas. I can... I can make my own choices. I won't regret this." He held herself close to him, to feel the beating of his heart.
This feeling... is this feeling love? Is this how... how John and Jessica feel for each other? John, a Destined who casted magic of all elements, and Jessica, an angel that shed her wings, were the first people that Midas had truely gotten to know. Even though time with them was short, he could feel that divine presence around them, the feelings they had for each other. Were these the same?
That night was filled with passion for the two. Elsa had given her innocence away to him, someone she truely loved. And Midas too surrendered to these feelings, the feeling of loving someone. It was such a new experience to him, having lived his life in that darkness, within that evil. Midas knew that doing this, giving in to these feelings would never tell him what path he had to choose. It couldn't tell him what he wanted. But somehow he knew it was a step in the right direction.
That night as Midas slept with his new lover, for the first time his pendant, which resonated with the evil and darkness within him, didn't glow.
