Chapter 3

YES finally!! I'm getting my priorities together and I'm gonna get back on track with ALL my stories.

Chapter Three

“Hey pono, where are you going?” Akamu asked his son after he cut the ignition off to his truck.
“Nowhere. I just want to go take a walk along the beach for a minute.”

“Oh, okay. Well don’t be too long, huh? Your mother’s gonna have 'aina ready soon.”

“I won’t.”

Akoni kicked off his shoes—the less he could wear shoes the happier he was—and walked around the side of their property to the area of beach located around the back of it. As he walked, he watched the sun begin to set. The sky changed from a lively light blue to a serene orange. Akoni finally spotted the rocks—his secret hiding place—and climbed it, sitting on it’s edge where the warm Pacific waters crashed gently into it’s hard sides.

“Akoni.”

Akoni jumped at his name suddenly being called and looked down at the ocean below him. There was Kekoa in the water……looking beautiful. Akoni thought. “Hey.”

Kekoa smiled. “Hi. You ready to go?”

“Ready to…..where are we going?”

“You’re coming with me.”

“W-what?”

“I told you I had something to show you.”

“You can’t bring it here?”

“I could, but I wanna show you my world. If you would like to see it.”

Akoni was silent for a moment then smiled. “Sure. I’d love to see it.”

“Wonderful. Come on.”

“Okay. Wait, hang on a sec.” Akoni stood up and stripped down to his white boxers. The set-in smile Kekoa had on his face dropped to an astonished gape at the body presented before him. A strong, hairless torso, defined arms, and long, cut legs under bronzed skin came into his view and Kekoa became slightly light-headed. He is so beautiful. The urge to touch him all over floated through Kekoa’s young, innocent mind, but he resisted knowing that his ‘surprise’ would not wait on him for too much longer.

“I don’t want to get my clothes wet.” Akoni said as he removed the t-shirt from over his head. He saw the obvious gawking the merman was giving him and he smiled before backed up and charged into a sprint, diving ‘canon-ball style’ into the ocean.

The splash of water brought Kekoa out his trance and he laughed as Akoni popped back to the surface. “Lets do it.” Akoni said. Kekoa nodded and grabbed his hand. Akoni found himself suddenly dragged down into the pacific at amazing speed. No two legs could ever swim as fast as Kekoa was moving, even with fins on one’s feet. He was amazed at what creatures he saw circulating through the crystal blue waters. Whales, mackerel, dolphins, blowfish, schools and more schools of bright tropical fish, and even a few small sharks swam past and Akoni was in awe. The best aquariums and sea exhibits could never beat this.

After a few minutes though, Akoni began to wonder just how far Kekoa was planning on taking him down. He could feel his stored breath slipping from him and the desire to breathe was becoming inevitable. But the scenery was so amazing, he didn’t want to leave it….but he knew he’d die if he didn’t. Akoni pulled on Kekoa’s hand and when the merman stopped to look at him, he gave a pointing gesture “up” signaling he was running out of air.

But instead of zipping his friend back to the surface to revive him, Kekoa smiled. Grabbing Akoni’s face, he kissed him open-mouthed. The young land-dweller could feel an overwhelming amount of air leave him and he grabbed onto Kekoa, fearing he would die….but he didn’t. The urge to breathe suddenly left him and he felt fine. Kekoa pulled back a little and smiled again. “Is that better?”

Akoni nodded. “Yeah, that’s…..What the hell?! I can talk?!”

Kekoa laughed. “Don’t get too excited about it. It’s only temporary, so we must hurry.” He reached for his hand again and they traveled the last few miles it took to reach the bottom of the ocean. The merman let go of Akoni and let his feet touch the dark sand of the bottom as he searched around for his ‘surprise’.

“This is too weird.” Akoni said to himself, laughing. “I’m talking underwater.” Just then, a mother and baby whale swam by him and he stiffened. “…..Whoa.”

Kekoa circled around searching for his brother. He checked around large rocks, seaweed, and mounds of coral for any traces of him, then finally spotted a small fin poking out from behind the large nose of a wooden ship that had sank to the bottom many years ago. He crept around and pinched him on the fin. “Yipe!” Ilani yelled, springing himself out from hiding.

“There you are. What are you doing hiding, Ilani? You said you’d meet my friend.”

“I wasn’t hiding. I was just searching for….seashells.”

“There’s nothing to be afraid of. He won’t bite you.”

Ilani frowned. “I told you I wasn’t hiding, Kekoa.” He folded his arms, much like he does when he gets upset. Kekoa rolled his eyes.

“Whatever. Come on, he’s over here.” Kekoa and Ilani swam back to where he left Akoni and saw him kneeling over a blowfish that was hiding between coral. He reached out to touch it but jerked back when the fish ‘deflated’ itself then zipped away. “Enjoying yourself?”

Akoni stood back up. “This is all so surreal. It’s really beautiful. I can’t believe you see these types of things everyday.”

Kekoa shrugged. “When you’ve been around it since birth, you don’t really think about it.” He put his arm around the merboy. “This is my brother, Ilani. Ilani, this is my friend, Kekoa.”

Akoni smiled. “Aloha.” He said as he extended his hand in a friendly handshake. Ilani, who was at first standing there with his arms crossed and his chest puffed out—like somebody macho—jumped and swam behind his older brother when he saw the other’s hand suddenly go out.

“….Oh, hey.” Ilani came back around from his brother and quickly shook Akoni’s hand. He studied the land dweller for a minute then frowned. “He sure is funny looking.”

Kekoa gasped. “Ilani!”

“What? It’s true. He’s got no scales, no fin, his eyes are a freaky looking brown, and those things down there,” He pointed to Akoni’s legs. “I don’t even know what you call those.”

“Call what?” Akoni asked.

“Those.” Ilani bent down and poked Akoni’s leg. “What are they?”

“They’re legs.”

“L-legs? What do you do with’em?”

“You use them to walk. That’s our way of getting around.”

Ilani folded his arms again. “Hmph, whatever. How do you swim with them then?”

Kekoa looked at his brother. “Ilani, that’s enough with the questions.”

Akoni smiled. “It’s okay, I don’t mind. We have to kind of kick our legs back and forth to swim.”

“Sounds tiring.”

Akoni laughed. “It is.”

“Well, I still say he’s funny looking.”

Kekoa rolled his eyes. “He’s not funny looking, Ilani,” He turned his lavender eyes upon Akoni’s and smiled. “He’s beautiful.”

Akoni turned his eyes away, embarrassed. Peka had never expressed comments like that towards him, so he wasn’t used to it and was not able to handle the gentle words.

“Yeah right!” Ilani said as his small body zipped down, around, and between Akoni’s legs, knocking the human down to the sand.

“Ilani, I’m gonna kill you!” Kekoa chased his brother around the ocean floor and Akoni laughed at the sight of Ilani dodging Kekoa’s hands and screaming bloody murder. But then he made this hiccup noise and an air bubble escaped his mouth. Kekoa saw. “Uh oh. I need to take you back.”

“You do?” Two more bubbles escaped him.

“Yeah. The air I gave you is wearing off.” He grabbed Akoni’s arm and lifted him upright again. “Ilani, I’ll be back.”

The merboy poked his head out from behind a rock. “Yeah, sure.”

Kekoa swam Akoni back to the surface of the now night-time lands and to their secret meeting place in mere seconds. He helped him back onto the large rock. “You okay now?”

Akoni wiped his face of the excess water the best he could. “Yeah, I’m fine. That was…..that was incredible, Kekoa. I mean I…..I have no words for all that I saw.”

“Yeah, I apologize for my brother, he’s—“

“Just like mine. No need to explain.” Akoni laughed.

“Well, I’m glad you liked the experience. Just make sure no one else knows.”

Akoni nodded. “Of course.”

“Oh! I nearly forgot.” Kekoa unhooked a handmade necklace made of twined rope for string and two small turquoise rocks with a small cowry shell in between them tied into the necklace, from around his wrist and handed it to Akoni. “I made this for you.”

Akoni smiled at the present. “Wow. Thank you. No ones ever made me anything before.”

“You’re welcome.”

“……Come’ere.” Pulling himself out the water onto the rock beside Akoni, Kekoa sat waiting. Akoni turned to the merman and touched his cheek. The property light at his house in the distance radiated a faint glow to the already tinted milky skin. Kekoa shivered at the foreign yet strongly desired caresses. “There’s something that you do to me and I don’t know what it is….but I like it. I never remember having this much fun with someone in a long time.”

“I’ve had fun with you too. I like you, Akoni.”

Akoni smiled. “I like you too.” Akoni finally leaned in the short distance and kissed Kekoa on the lips. It wasn’t like all the times before. Before, they were simple closed-mouth kisses that were sweet and gentle. That night, the kiss Akoni gave Kekoa was just as sweet and gentle, but definitely carried more passion. Kekoa was taken aback at first. He didn’t know how to come at the kiss….but he wasn’t gonna back away from it. Responding in kind, Kekoa leaned more into the kiss, starting to feel nearly light-headed at how good it felt.

When Akoni finally pulled back, he smiled looking at how cute Kekoa looked—his lavender eyes still closed and his body still leaning inward. He chuckled then tapped the merman’s nose with his finger and Kekoa finally opened his eyes. “I need to go, my mother is going to kill me cause I know I missed 'aina.”

“Okay. Tomorrow then?”

“Absolutely.” Akoni stood up, putting his clothes back on. “Aloha.”

“Aloha.” Kekoa watched the human jump off the rock and jog back down the beach. When he was out of eyesight, Kekoa fell back onto the rock and looked at the stars with the dreamiest smile on his face. “He likes me.”

“Who likes you?” Kekoa recognized his brother’s voice and when he looked to his right, sure enough there he was perched on the rock’s edge. “You talking about that land dweller again?”

“Yes.” Ilani rolled his eyes. “What? Don’t be jealous because that little red-head mermaid won’t give you the time of day.”

“Her name is Ariel, fart-face….and she does give me the time of day……sometimes.” Kekoa laughed.

“Akoni Keo Kulani, where have you been?” Makoka asked her son as he tried to slip into the house unnoticed, her hands on her hips.

“I…..was out.”

“Duh, pono, that’s been established. Where have you been?”

“I was out at the beach…..with some friends…..from school.” I really suck at lying.

“Didn’t your father tell you about `aina? You’d rather hang out all afternoon with friends instead of coming home to your family for dinner?”

“I know, mom. I’m sorry.” Now it’s time to put on that Kulani charm. Akoni walked behind his huffy mother and hugged her, giving her a kiss on the cheek. “It won’t happen again. I promise. Forgive me?” He gave her this pout that she couldn’t resist. It was something about when Akoni gave her those sad puppy eyes that melted her heart. He’d been doing that since birth practically and it always got to her.

Makoka sighed. “You always know how to get to your mother, don’t you, pono?” She pushed him away. “Go take a shower and I’ll heat up some dinner for you.”

Akoni laughed. “okay.” But as he walked away, Makoka stopped him again.

“Akoni?”

“Yeah?”

“Your ipo called…..over a billion times today. Maybe you should ring him sometime tonight before he has a heartattack or calls for a search squad.”

Peka. Oh man, I forgot all about him.

I don’t own the character of Ariel, that’s Disney’s property. But it was perfect when I slipped her in there like that, haha!
