If You Only Knew

Two sanitation workers were dumping garbage into the truck on a regular Monday. One of them started to pick up the garbage can near the club and found it surprisingly heavy to lift. He opened the can to see what was making his job harder and what he saw made him sick to his stomach. A young woman, dead, her bruised body stuffed into the small can. He took two long breaths, pushing the rising bile back to his stomach and called his coworker over to the chilling discovery. Unlike himself, his partner looked at the crumpled body, took two steps back and emptied his breakfast on the alley street. The other man rubbed the sick man’s back, not noticing the movement from within the can. It jerked once, twice and the fell over, the top facing the two men. Like from some horror movie, the presumably “dead” woman, dragged her body out of the small container and slowly rose up from the ground, her bones cracking into place. The woman looked at the two sanitation workers and with a blink of an eye, held the two men by their throats and started cutting off their oxygen.

“What’s today,” she said in a gruff voice, her eyes glowing in the sunlight. She received no answer and began squeeze their throats tighter.
“Monday,” replied the man in her right hand, “Please don’t hurt me!”
“What time is it and where is the nearest police station,” she asked the other man.
“10:23 and it is three blocks north!!”
She let go of the scared men and ran off towards the police station with only one thought in her mind.

Whatever you do Jodi, don’t say ‘I do’!

Chapter Title from “More Than Words” by Eric Clapton
[=========================]

If You Only Knew

Across town, in a separate room in the church, Jodi was nervous with anticipation about her marriage. While her mother was helping her into her gown, she got a message from Sage that Alex never returned to the room last night and she was getting worried for her new friend. ‘Where is she,’ she questioned in her thoughts. Her somber feelings were interrupted by a knock at the door. Raul, dressed in a white tuxedo, came in and kissed his bride to be on the forehead.

“Raul, isn’t it bad luck to see the bride before the ceremony,” warned Jodi. He laughed and cupped her chin. “I just wanted to see you so badly,” he stopped when he saw the sad smile on her face. “What’s wrong sweetie? Having second thoughts about the marriage?” The bride shook her head and held the hand holding her chin.
“It’s just that Alex has gone missing and I just want her here. I know it sounds strange…” Her soon-to-be husband laughed and looked at her confused look.
“That’s actually funny because I also came in to tell you that she just called me and said that she’s going to be late. Traffic and whatnot. I must go now, the ceremony will start soon.” And with another kiss on the lips, Raul left the room, leaving Jodi’s mother to put the veil over her daughter’s face.

Her father, teary eyed, linked arms with her and escorted her to the entrance of the church. The music began everyone as the processional music began. The bride walked in unison with her father one step in front of the other. Through the veil she saw people who were strangers and others who she knew all her life. She looked ahead and saw her mother in the front pew already dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief; she saw her soon to be husband smiling sincerely and looking radiant in his white tuxedo; she also saw Sage his face full of worry as he filmed every step she made. Once she arrived at the altar, Raul raised the veil out of her face, mouthing an ‘I love you’ as Father Thomas began the ceremony. Before she knew it, the ceremony was almost over and there was no hide no hair of her photographer. Sage had videotaped and took pictures of the wedding without her knowing.

“Is there anyone who objects to this union,” asked the priest. As soon as he finished asking the question, the doors to the church swung open to reveal a very haggard and angry looking Alex. What Jodi didn’t know is that her world was about to be turned upside down.

After busting through the front doors, Alex , after shoving a few civilians out of the way, ran up to the pudgy officer on desk duty, panting.
“A con man is going to marry my friend,” she screamed at the man. The officer looked at her like she was crazy and picked up his coffee to sip, “You have any proof?”
She shoved her hands fishing around for the photo in her pocket and finally pulled the crumbled Polaroid of ‘Raul’ and the group. Even though the picture is crumpled Raul’s face is clearly visible to the officer who almost choked on his beverage.
“That’s Antoine Perre,” he screams in the room, catching the attention of several other police men, “We’re been trying to catch this guy for years! He marries unsuspecting girls and runs off with their money six months later! How did you know him?”

She took a large breath before explaining the whole story, “Met this girl who has a fiancée who I didn’t like, so I followed him to a club where he was meeting some people who called him by his real name, Antoine, and revealed his plan but he freaked out when he saw me at the bar and tried to bribe me but I refused and to shut me up ran me over with his car and now have a bruise on my side which hurts like a bitch.”

The man in front of her was busy taking notes on a pad before slamming it down on the desk. “Thank you very much citizen for your help,” he proclaimed to Alex, “You and you,” he pointed at two other officers, “we’re going to bust Perre in the act!” He started for the exit when the blonde tightly grabbed his arm.

“I’m coming with you.”

“Miss, I’m afraid,” he began but stopped when he felt the iron like grip on his arm getting tighter and the pins and needles in his forearm due to the loss of circulation. He was swung around so that the two were facing eye to eye.
“Listen you, that man hit me with a car and I believe that entitles me to a little retribution. And plus you have no idea where the wedding is taking place and I have no idea what the name of the church is so in order to help me I have to help you. Got it?”
The frightened man shook his head so much, it reminded the doctor of a bobble head. She let go of the man’s hand and started out of the building with the three men trailing behind her. They all got into a squad car, Alex riding shotgun, and sped onto the city streets, sirens blaring. Alex gave them the directions as they swerved between cars and actually had to drive on the sidewalk to avoid a traffic accident.

Ten minutes later, the car arrived at the church and Alex jumped out of the still running car car, not even waiting for it to come to a complete stop. Once her feet touched the concrete, the blonde bolted towards the entrance, dodging people who stood in her way and pushed the doors to the church open. As soon as she entered the church, all eyes were her, including the relieved eyes of Jodi and the terrified eyes of ‘Raul.’ She started to walk towards the two and eventually started to run towards the altar. As soon as she reached the priest and the marrying couple, Alex swung her fist and hit Raul in his jaw sending him to the floor. She was immediately held back by Felix and Joel and started thrashing in their grip. Mortified at her new friend’s action she looked at her and screamed.

“ALEX!” Screamed a flabbergasted Jodi, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
Sage stopped his filming and helped his sibling escape from the arms of the other men. “Listen Jodi, if my sister does things without telling others then it’s for a good reason so let her speak.”

“I’m saving you from making a big mistake,” she dusted herself and turned to the bride while pointing a finger at the fallen con artist, “‘Raul’ is actually Antoine, a notorious and wanted con man who was going to marry you and then run off with your money in half a year.” While Alex explained the truth to the crowd, she did not notice Antoine get up from the floor, a candle stand in his hands and an angry scowl on his face.

“He also ran me with over when I saw him sucking lips with another woman,” she said as she pulled out the same picture that she showed the cops, “and I have the picture and bruises to prove it.” That was when the con man swung the pole and hit Alex’s side, causing her to scream out in pain and stagger towards the side one of the pews. Antoine raised the pole above his head and swung it downward. The blonde turned towards her attacker and caught the pole just as it was about to connect with her head. The criminal found soon enough he was loosing the battle when Alex slowly rose from the floor and started pushing against him. But before she could do anything the police ran up to Perre, guns drawn just in case he try the same stunt again, and forced his arms behind his back.

“Perre! You’re under arrest for marriage fraud.” Scowling he was taken away in handcuffs and was being led back to the car.

Alex released the pole, held her arching side and looked around the chapel and found that Jodi was missing. Turning towards the entrance she got a glimpse of a white gown and knew it was her. She ran after the woman and found her running away from the church. The doctor grabbed the brunette’s hand to prevent her from going any further and in response Jodi spun around and smacked her in the face just as the sky overhead started to darken. The blonde, in shock, let her hand go in order to touch her burning cheek.

“Why did you do that for?”

With mascara running down her face, the former bride screamed, beating against the foreigner’s chest, “I hate you! Everything was going so well in my life and then you had to go and ruin it!!”

“How did I ruin it,” asked Alex in defense while catching Jodi’s ever moving arms, “I just saved you from marrying a con man.”

Jodi slipped her hands away from the blonde and in the process fell onto the street. Her facial expression rapidly turned from one of sadness to one of anger towards the blonde.
“But I really loved him!”

“Jodi...” Alex sighed and knelt down to the fallen woman, extending a hand out towards her. But all Jodi did was slap her hand away and snarl at the blonde.

“NO!! Don’t touch me! I wish I never met you! I wished I was raped!”

Alex was so shocked she stepped back and stared at furious girl. “You don’t mean it...”

“No Dr. Martin. I do mean it.” With that response, Jodi had successfully ripped, crushed, and sent the remains of Alex’s heart into the sun. Thunder boomed in the air as Alex rose slowly, like her legs had no strength in them.

“Well then,” she said in a dismal tone, “I’m sorry to have bothered you miss. Have a nice day.”

And with that being said, Alex walked away from the petite woman. Jodi shuffled toward a random bench in the courtyard and looked up just as the doctor entered a cab. When it drove off, the brunette put her head in her hands and sobbed. She had all these emotions in her head and she didn’t know what to do. Her fiancé was actually a con man and her friend….she didn’t even know what Alex was to her anymore.

“Lover’s spat?” asked a homeless man who was occupying the same bench. She began to wipe the remaining makeup off her face and removed the veil from her body. “I think you should make up though.”

Jodi sniffled twice and rubbed the tears out of her eyes. “‘Lover’s spat’? Oh we’re not lovers…” The man took an old hat from his pocket hat and beat on his leg before putting it on his head. “You sure about that? I could’ve sworn that you two were lovers.” The brunette laughed somberly before turning to the man.

“After what she’s done, I don’t know what she is to me.”

The man looked confused and made a gesture for her to explain the situation. And she did. She told him about the night they met, her marriage, Alex’s offer and everything that led to the failed wedding. When she finished her story the brunette felt a little better. She didn’t know why but she did.

“Well it seems like this woman loves you a lot. And if you don’t believe me, look at what she’s done for you and believe me, she’s done a lot.” Jodi replayed the events leading up to know and even what happened in the church. Alex did really love her and she just snapped the poor woman’s heart in two only moments before. She covered her mouth in shock once she realized what she just realized what she did. “Oh my god. What have I done?”

“But all is not lost. You could still fix it,” said the homeless man as he stood, “If you know where she lives. Find her and tell her before it is too late.” Without another word Jodi got off the bench and ran in the direction of the hotel, heels and all. “Hurry Madamemoiselle,” she heard the man exclaim as he too ran for cover, “There’s a storm coming!”

That information only made her run faster in her gown.

When she arrived at the hotel twenty minutes later, she was drenched. Unfortunately the man was right about the storm as the downpour came just a block away from the hotel. She ran into the building and ran towards the stairs. Halfway up the stairs Jodi was stopped by the manager of the hotel.

“And where do you think you’re going?” But Jodi just ignored him and rushed by where he was standing. She could her in the distance the man telling her to get back and later barking a command to other workers. Now she had a group chasing her. She had to find Alex’s door before they caught up to her and kicked her out of the hotel. After going up three flights of stairs, she finally landed on a floor she recognized.

Now all she had to do is find Alex’s room. She began to knock on every door, its occupants confused when they saw her in her gown but she would move onto the next door if it wasn’t Alex’s room. Finally she knocked on one of the doors and was greeted by one tired blonde doctor. Jodi saw that Alex had changed into a pair of flannel pants and a white tank top. The taller woman rubbed her eyes and looked down at the soaked woman.

“Jodi?” The woman hugged the confused person before she felt herself being pulled away from the blonde. She was now in the hands of the hotel workers and the manager she dodged earlier.

“I hope she didn’t disturb you that much madam,” stated the manager but Alex wasn’t listen to a word he was saying. She looked at the captured woman who looked like she was about to break down in tears. The brunette mouthed “Please” and Alex sighed. Her expression turned from peaceful to angry as she raised her hand and brought it across the speakers face. He recoiled holding his burning cheek.

“Are you people imbeciles,” she angrily asked as she took one step towards the other men. She ripped Jodi from their grip and placed her behind her back. “I called the front desk ten minutes ago and told you that a woman would be coming and she would be wearing a gown because she works as an actress in a play and you can’t even remember that!!”

“But Madame...” Alex held out her hand stopping the man’s replay and began to complain again, this time her voice being much louder and people actually leaving the room to see what the noise was.

“The service in this place stinks. I’ve never been to a hotel that has such horrendous staff. I can’t believe I paid a lot of money to come here and this is what I get,” she motioned to Jodi for effect, “Your people abusing my girlfriend? Well I won’t stand it!”

Now the hotel workers were in the spotlight. Many of the people were murmuring to each other and giving the men scornful looks.

“Madame… we are so sorry about this situation and in order to compensate you can have the rest of your meals free,” the man said trying to escape the floor as quickly as possible. Alex scratched her chin and snorted.

“Fine! Bring up your most expensive wine whatever’s the most expensive meal on the menu. It better be up here in the next fifteen minutes or else there will be hell to pay…” She ushered Jodi into her room and slammed the door as the men bowed to her. A breathe of relief escaped her lips and she stared at the brunette who was staring at her.

“Well now that was fun,” Alex began as she moved past the wet brunette and sat on the edge Sage’s bed. “Now tell me, why have you graced me with you presence?”

“Why did you help me? Why didn’t let them kick me out,” was her response. The doctor just crossed her legs and let her folded hands rest on her knee. “You did say ‘Please’.” Jodi’s frame started to shake before she launched herself at the blonde, causing the two to fail onto the bed. The brunette sobbed uncontrollably into Alex’s top, muttering her apology while Alex rubbed Jodi’s back and listen to her sobs become small hiccups. And that’s how the two stayed for the next ten minutes, laid out on the bed, Jodi resting her head on the woman’s stomach as Alex rubbed her back. The only thing that broke the silence from time to time was Jodi’s hiccups.

Moments later there was a knock at the door and a call of “room service”. The two disengaged from each other and Jodi sat on the bed while Alex put on her angry face and opened the door. The young man was terrified as he pushed the cart full of the food and wine into the middle of the room. He placed the cart in the middle of the room and tried to run out but Alex caught his arm before he made it to the door. She whispered something in his ear that made him visibly pale. When she was done, he furiously nodded and ran out of the room slamming the door shut behind him. Instead of going to the cart, Alex made a sharp right and went into the bathroom and came out with a wash rag and a towel and threw them at the brunette. “Go take a bath. I don’t want to explain to your parents why you have pneumonia, okay? I’ll call my brother and tell him to stay with your parents. The storm’s gotten really bad.”

Jodi nodded and walked to the bathroom. She removed the dress from her body and began to clean herself. While in the shower she heard the door open and saw someone place something near the sink and leave. When she finished her shower and dried off she found a pair of silk pajamas on the sink. She put on the garments and left the bathroom and saw Alex sitting by the window, eating her food. Jodi took the remaining plate and sat across from the quirt blonde. For the most part the two ate in silence, their eyes glued to their plates, only looking up when one of them was sure the other wasn’t looking. This time the only noise was thunder from outside and the light rhythm the rain made when it fell onto the window. They had finished their food when someone knocked on the door again but this time the scared man from before entered terrified as Alex took note of every move he maid. He went to the table, placed the plates back onto the cart and drove the cart out of the room, slamming the door again.

“So what is the real reason you’re here Jodi?” Jodi folded her hands and set them on her lap and looked sincerely at Alex.

“I came to apologize. To tell you that I’m sorry for everything I said to you.” Alex got up, retrieved the wine from the small fridge and motioned her to sit on Sage’s bed. The blonde produced two small glasses and handed one to Jodi. She filled Jodi’s glass halfway and filled her own to the brim.

“Apology accepted,” Alex took a large drink of her wine and looked down at the petite woman, “But is that all you want to tell me?”

“What,” Jodi was confused with her question. “It’s just I can tell when people are holding out on me,” She took a step forward so she was immediately in front of Jodi, “And I don’t like when people do that.”

The brunette immediately stared down at her wine, rather than Alex’s face. She was nervous, she didn’t know why but for some reason when she tried to get the words out they would refuse to leave her throat.
“Well after you left in the cab I had a talk with someone.” Alex raised an eyebrow and scratched her chin. “Really? And who is this ‘someone’.”

“He was a homeless man,” Jodi replied before taking another sip of her wine.

“A homeless man,” Alex asked in disbelief and Jodi nodded.

“I told him about what has happened in the last week and he gave me opinion. He first told me that he believed that you loved me.” Jodi saw Alex’s body freeze up but she didn’t show it. “Then he told me that if I could reach you in time and tell you something I would be able to fix it. The thing is that I don’t know what ‘it’ is! And…” She proceeded to say something but it became a mumble and Alex didn’t hear it. The doctor bent over so the two were face to face. “What was that?”

“I think I’m love with you…” said an embarrassed Jodi who was now occupied with her wine.

“But is that want you believe or what the guy says you have to say.”

Jodi balled her free hand into a fist while Alex sat down beside her a comforting hand on the brunette’s shoulder. “Jodi?”

“It’s what I believe.”

“What?”

“I love you Alex.” Alex was stunned for two reasons. One she actually believed that Jodi was going to say that it was what the man wanted her to say. She was actually happy she decided herself. The second reason why she was in shock was that she suddenly found herself on her back with Jodi’s lips softly pressing against her own, she could still taste the wine on her lips… Okay, so she wasn’t in shock but she was enjoying every minute of it. It was she who broke the kiss, due to lack of oxygen, and pushed against Jodi. Jodi moved off the blonde and onto the bed.

“I’m so sorry…” Alex stopped her with a finger to her lips. Her face held a happy smile as she sat up on the bed, her legs crossed. “There’s nothing to be sorry about. I was just taken off guard, t’is all. Normally I’m the one who makes the first moves.” Jodi laughed for the first time that day as Alex tackled her. The two rolled and laughed on the bed until the blonde yelled and rolled off the bed.

“I think you spilled wine on the bed.” Indeed Jodi did, for there was a large maroon spot on the bed. Jodi laughed sheepishly and got off the bed. “Looks like you’re sleeping with me. Not that I’m complaining.” She quickly swooped Jodi up into her arms and dropped her squealing onto her bed. Alex tickled her sides until tears started leaking out of her brown eyes.

“I give! You win,” Alex stopped and triumphantly got under the sheets. “Now that we now know who wears the pants in this relationship,” this earned a punch from Jodi, “I propose we go to bed. As much as I would like to consummate this new relationship, and believe me I would, I feel very tired and now have suspicions that the staff drugged the wine.” Jodi followed Alex under the sheets and rested her head onto the pillow. She almost yelled when she felt her body being dragged from her spot and embraced by Alex’s own. “Much better she said before clapping the lights off.

“Night Alex. You know we’re going to talk about this in the morning.”

“I know but first sleep. Goodnight love.” She gave Jodi a squeeze and stared into the darkness. Her situation was too good to be true: She had vanquished the bad guy and gotten the girl; a scenario only in old movies and faerie tales. But before she could contemplate how she got here, the sandman came on by and sent her on a first class to dream land.

Even though her bed was further away from the window the morning rays still caught Alex, making her grumbled. She opened her eyes and saw Jodi, breathing softly in her sleep.

‘Yes! Last night wasn’t a dream’

A cough interrupted her thoughts and she raised her head to look at the source of the cough. At the foot of her bed stood Sage, Jodi’s parents and Felix, the last three people had their arms crossed over their chest with questioned looks on their faces.
She jabbed Jodi softly in her side until she woke up. Four jabs later, the brunette opened her eyes and looked at her new lover who sat up straight up in the bed, looking ahead. She followed the blonde’s line of vision and found the four people standing in front of the bed. The two looked at each other, at the crowd and then each other again with the same thought in mind.

Busted.
