Chapter Three
A slight jolt on the train startled Kara as she stirred from her sleep. The breaks were being applied gradually; she figured they were near her stop now. The kind man before her smiled as she stretched and rubbed her eyes.
“I got you some water. We’ll be stopping shortly.”
She smiled to him in a silent thank you and sipped the water he had offered her. She looked out the window as the train approached the station and came to a squealing halt. She stood and arched her tired back as her friend did the same. They grabbed their things and stepped onto the platform silently. It wasn’t until she was about to walk away that he finally asked his question of her.
“Maybe we can get a bite to eat sometime?” She smiled to him tiredly.
“No thank you, I have some adjusting to do I think. I do appreciate your kindness.” He nodded to her.
“Don’t mention it, I’m sure a pretty girl like you gets it all the time.” With that he left her as people flooded off the train. She looked around for a moment to get her bearings before starting off in the direction of the gate that led to the streets of the city. She looked to the faces of people who stood waiting for loved ones to pass the gate. Kara sighed as her heart fluttered. A tall man with dark hair stood with his back to the station, he leaned against the metal bars of the gate while taking a drag from his cigarette. She surveyed him with a cautious eye, not really sure if it was Daniel or not until she passed the gate and rounded enough to get a better look at his face.
Dark strands of hair fell into his eyes as the cool wind blew lightly. He was clean-shaven, and nearly a head taller than she was. She smiled as she slowly approached him; he had grown into a man in her absence. She was almost six yards away when their eyes locked and she stopped in her tracks. She studied his eyes, his deep pools of dark brown and green. She held her breath as they seemingly stole the air from her lungs. They were her eyes as well. He took a final drag from his cigarette and threw the butt to the ground as he approached her, closing the gap between them in long strides. She looked up at him as he stood before her, her head came level to his chest, and his broad shoulders were so welcoming to her she couldn’t help herself. She let go of her things and went to the tips of her toes as she threw her arms around her brother’s neck burying her face into his collar. He returned the embrace warmly, holding her to the point that she nearly came off the ground. He rested his cheek on her head as he spoke into her hair.
“I missed you Kara.” She smiled at his words as she slowly felt his arms fall from around her telling her she had to let go of him as well.
“I missed you too Danny.”
She smiled as her old pet name struck him again. He sighed heavily and picked up her things. She walked in silence, looking about her with keen observation, taking in the city in photographs in her mind.
Daniel simply watched her in enjoyment. She had grown over the years he hadn’t been near her, and she had bloomed into a young woman without him being there to protect her. His mind wandered to when he was a boy, how awful he was to girls, and he wished now that he had been there to shield her from that. He looked at her from the corner of his eye as she gapped at all the surroundings.
Daniel led her to a beat up Cadillac just a short distance away opening the driver door to pop the trunk and put her things in as Kara circled around to the passenger side.
“I never asked on the phone, did you have a boyfriend in your home town?” She blinked at him, a bit surprised by the question but answered quickly.
“No, I’ve actually never had a boyfriend before. School eats up a lot of my time, I can’t waste what time I have left on boys.”
She smiled playfully at her brother as he chuckled at her comment and climbed into the car.
“Well I’m glad to hear I don’t have to kill anyone. I don’t want to go to jail for murder.”
A slight grin pulled at the corner of his mouth as he looked at her from the corner of his eye. She looked up at him with her bright eyes. She looked so fragile to him then, looking up at him like she did when she was a child. He didn’t realize until then how big it made him feel, the way she looked at him made him feel as if nothing could harm him. Nothing was strong enough to keep him from protecting her when she looked at him with those eyes of hers. His mind trailed off, as it was Kara’s turn to throw a question.
“What about you Danny? Any particular woman you’re with?” He looked at her warningly as they drove.
“I’m twenty Kara, you really don’t want me answering any sex questions, really you don’t.” She giggled at his reaction.
“I’m sorry, I just thought maybe you were the commitment kind of guy.” She shrugged as he studied her closely for clues as to what she was getting at. He found none.
They parked and after grabbing her things, entered a small apartment complex and took a beat up elevator to the ninth floor. She smiled as she turned to her brother.
“You have the top floor apartment? Isn’t that expensive?” He smiled at her reaction to his living status.
“Being a detective pays well, very well. And it’s not all that expensive really. If this place was a better complex it’d be more costly but it’s not a grand hotel, not by a long shot.”
She smiled as the elevator dinged and opened, leading them down a short hall with a door at the end. Daniel fumbled with his keys and unlocked his door to lead her inside. When he flipped on the lights it was a scene she half expected to find. It wasn’t a complete disaster but it was clear to see that a man lived on his own, and by his own cleaning terms. He scratched the back of his neck as his cheeks turned a light red seeing his sister’s reaction to his home.
“It’s a bachelor pad, what can I say. Hope it’s not too disgusting.” She laughed as she closed the door behind her.
“It’s not as bad as I expected it would be Danny.” She smiled at him as she stood in his large living room. “I can live with this.” He studied her a moment before snapping to attention once more.
“Oh, here are the bedrooms. You can have this one, it’s clean.” He led her down a hall and to the only door on the left. It was a small room, just big enough for her and her sparse things. She smiled at the set up; it was actually kind of cozy to her. But in the end, she was just thankful not to be alone.
“I’ll let you unpack.” She nodded as he went to leave but stopped at the doorway. “Oh and the bathroom is the last door in the hall, just in case.” He grinned at her a ‘playful-big-brother’ grin before disappearing around the corner and leaving her to unpack her things.
A/N: So now they've met face to face and Kara is in for some major shocks to her system. Stay tuned for further adventures. ^^
