After the Battle
Chapter 2
After the Battle
Heero stood at the window of the living room, watching Lilly as she strolled through the garden. It had been a week since the fight against Malachite Servious, a fighter for the Orion Clan, their mortal enemies.
Her bumps and scrapes had nearly faded, but the scars of the battle still were with her. She was quiet and in drawn, her thoughts only focusing on her first battle. Heero closed his prussian blue eyes and thought back to the day.
~~~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~~
“Well, is this the leader of the Warriors of Lore?” the man with black eyes and blood red hair asked, laughing evilly.
Lilly sucked in gasping breaths as he drew nearer to her. She stepped back, her green eyes darkening with fear. She held up her hands, a ball of energy forming at the palms. The burning flames glinted off of her silver armor, and her shaking knees.
“Stay away from me!” she screamed as she launched it at him, but he easily deflected it and reached for her.
The others heard her scream and were helpless as they watched her fly into a hard brick wall. It crumbled on top of her, crushing her small body. Blood could be seen underneath the bricks and flowed from in between the cracks.
“Good, one less person to kill!” Malachite Servious cackled and turned towards the others.
“I’m not dead yet you shit head!” a voice screamed in anger, bricks flying up and towards the laughing man. They slammed into him, cutting large chunks into his skin. He swiveled around, a painful grimace centered on his face. Astonishment rose as he watched the transformation taking place before his very eyes.
Her long ebony locks turned silver and flew around her body, a white aura glowing around her. Her emerald eyes flashed in anger before turning an icy blue as she lifted her hands in the air, palms up.
“Final Destiny!” she screamed, the area filled with light. The sky darkened and lighting flashed against the shaking earth.
Malachite Servious groaned as a beam of light sliced through his heart. He fell to the ground dead, his blood staining the earth crimson.
Lilly powered down and looked at the cooling corpse, her armor stained with his life force as she held him to her chest.
“What have I done?!” she cried out in agony. The others gathered around her as her screams filled the air.
~~~~~~~~~~Present~~~~~~~~~~
“It was her first battle Heero. Give her credit, she did pretty well,” Yusuke commented as he walked to the other window. Mina settled beside him and sighed.
“Exactly Yusuke. It was her first time to kill someone. It must be so hard on her, knowing that she took a life,” Mina snapped. Her blue eyes filled with sadness as she watched the girl slump against a tree, holding her head as she sobbed.
“A girl like her shouldn’t have to kill,” Heero muttered, surprising everyone. Mina shrugged, saying something about destiny. He wasn’t listening though. His eyes and mind were focused on the girl as she punched holes in the ground. Her sorrow hurt his heart that had been hidden for so long. It was a surprise, but a welcome one.
“I’m going down to talk to her,” he stated in his monotone voice. Mina and Yusuke just watched him go, knowing smiles on their faces.
“I’m a murderer,” Lilly whispered, twining her hands in her tangled black hair. She shook her head and cried, sobbing those words over and over. But her mind was somewhere else, back when she was ten. Lilly’s shoulders shook with barely suppressed anger, until two hands took them in his.
“What happened back then?” a monotone voice asked. Lilly looked up into deep prussian blue eyes, and knew she had to tell someone before it drove her insane. She put her hands on his head, transferring memories to him. He closed his eyes and watched as the scenes hit him.
~~~~~~~~~Memories of the Past~~~~~~~~
The wind blew against her face as she walked to school, whipping her short ebony hair across her10 year old face. She lifted it away, pausing slightly when she saw her best friend Katie standing there, waving her hands in the air.
“Lilly! Hurry Lilly! Something’s happening at the school! Hurry!” she screamed. Lilly sprinted towards her, grabbed her hand, and dragged her to the school building. The sight before sent chills up her spine.
The building was engulfed in flames and the screams of children trapped inside echoed around them. Lilly pushed Katie behind her and scanned for the source of the massacre. It was a monster, 6’11” with large muscles and purple skin. His teeth, yellow and rotting, were stained with blood, probably from her classmates.
“Go get help!” Lilly warned Katie. But the small girl was frozen with mind numbing fear. The monster spotted them and walked towards the two, a smile of pure bloodlust forming on his mouth.
“Yum, time for dessert!” he croaked and reached out a hand for Lilly. She spun in the air and kicked it away from the two. But before she could land he tossed her like a rag doll across the field.
Regaining her senses she watched in horror as he took the screaming Katie in his monstrous hands, ripping her arms away from her body. Blood dripped in a lake below the two and Katie screamed with pain. She couldn’t even pass out from it before he ripped off her legs and stuck them in his mouth, chewing in delight.
“NO! STOP IT!” Lilly screamed as she rushed foreword, but not in time to stop him from cleaving Katie’s head from her neck and tossing it at her.
Lilly caught it and stared into the lifeless blue eyes of her best friend. She let the blood pour onto her hands and the ground, soaking her with its sticky warmth. Something inside Lilly broke, causing a transformation inside of her.
She set the head softly on the ground and turned towards the monster as he smirked, still chewing on a leg. Lilly lifted her hands to the sky, the wind picking up, creating a halo of hair around her face. The ebony strands turned silver, the blood coating it and the flames glinting red across it. Her emerald eyes, now furious and promising revenge, turned an icy blue.
“Damn you to hell you monster!” she screamed at the overcast sky. A flash of light erupted into the early morning and sent a beam of light towards the monster. With one scream of agony it tore his body apart, just like Katie had been. Some blood and guts flew onto Lilly, but her emotionless eyes only stared into the empty space where the monster had been.
“I’m sorry Katie,” she whispered as she picked up the tattered head of her friend and cradled it to her chest. Her tears spilled onto the bloody red and blond curls of her friend. She would never know how sorry the little girl was.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~End Memories~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heero stared in shock at what he had just seen. Yes, Heero had experienced a lot when he was ten, but nothing as horrific as that. He settled his prussian eyes on her shaking shoulders, the pain from the memories evident in her green eyes.
“The community lost 326 people that day, mostly classmates of mine. They burned to death in the school, or were eaten by the monster,” she related.
“They were buried in a grave yard all their own. But I took Katie and buried her in our secret spot. She lies under a great weeping willow marked by a large stone. I was still in that power mode and I was able to carry a small boulder from a hill.”
Lilly watched with solemn eyes, gauging his reaction. But as always, his eyes were emotionless and his face passive.
“You were only ten,” he whispered in his monotone voice. Lilly nodded and shrugged.
“That’s why you said you wouldn’t fight.” Lilly nodded again, though her eyes turned sad.
“I did fight though, and I killed someone,” she sighed in misery. Heero shook his head in agreement.
“Yes, you did. But it was either kill or be killed. So you made your choice, and it was the right one,” he said, this time his voice turning impatient.
Lilly sighed, her eyes not quite reaching his. Heero growled in aggravation and tipped her head to force her to look at him.
“You little idiot, you’re a fighter! In battles like this, we have to kill our enemies to protect the innocent. We swore we would, and if you mourn everyone you kill, you will lose your nerve and won’t be able to keep your promise! You’d be breaking the oath that you swore your life to!” he roared, causing Lilly to flinch. Even though she knew he was right, the pain from her battle still sunk into her heart.
The tears flowed slowly down her cheeks and she launched herself into his arms, startling the stone-faced boy. Heero had to wrap his arms around her shaking body to keep his balance.
“It was like losing Katie all over again! I wasn’t holding Malachite Servious, I was holding her!” she cried out as she buried her face against his chest. He stroked her hair and put his cheek to the soft locks.
“She wouldn’t want you to lose your life just because you couldn’t stop her from dying. She would want you to fight so innocents wouldn’t be killed,” he whispered soothingly, startling both Lilly and himself. She nodded and locked her arms around his waist, holding him close to her quaking body.
“Please stay Heero! Help me to fight and kill without hating myself,” she sobbed. Heero nodded, and settled against the tree, her body still pressed against his.
“You have my promise that I won’t leave you Lilly. Not for anything.”
