Cagila suppressed a laugh as the door opened and then blinked in surprise at the man who’d opened the door with a surly, “whatdiyewant?”
It was a dwarf. Barely four feet high and nearly as wide across at the shoulders. His red beard hung down past his wide leather belt and was braided in as complicated a braid as she’d ever seen. He had big brown eyes that looked between her and Rafiq with interest even as the scowl deepened on his face.
“I’m still fixin’ the damage from yer last visit.” He grumbled to Rafiq by way of greeting, and then the stout dwarf jerked a thumb at Cagila. “Where’d ye kidnap her from? She didna follow ye here willingly.”
Rafiq grinned. “It is good to see you too, Francois. Is my room clean?”
The dwarf looked affronted. “Of course it’s clean! This isn’t some riverfront dive, Cap’n. Come with me.” He glanced at Cagila again. “Let me draw the curtain first, someone sees her they’re liable to burn the place down.” He left them standing outside as he closed the door with a slam.
Cagila raised an eyebrow. “Captain?”
Rafiq trailed a hand down her neck with a laugh. “A long story, perhaps some other time.” The door was jerked open again and Francois rolled his eyes up into his bushy eyebrows as he waved them in. The prince’s hand was warm on her back as they followed the dwarf up a narrow staircase and down a dimly lit hallway.
“Annie’s coming with wine.” Francois snapped after he unlocked the door and stomped in. “It’s a bit musty, we weren’t expectin’ ye, Cap’n.”
“It’s fine, thank you.” Rafiq replied and lit a few candles himself so that the room was bathed in a soft glow. “You’d best get back downstairs, Francois, they’ll be rowdy tonight.”
“Good.” The dwarf growled. “I haven’t had a decent reason to use me axe in five moons.” He slammed the door behind him.
Cagila laughed. “I did not think the rohimus still walked above.”
“I’m going to assume you mean dwarves,” Rafiq stepped up behind her and ran his hands along her sides. “They are few and far between. Francois has no clan left.” She felt the sadness in his voice. “I offered him a choice and he felt it was best to stay above. For all his surly nature, he is a good and loyal friend.”
She turned in his embrace and cupped his face. “You are too young to have seen as much as you have.” Cagila laughed softly. “I think in your…what 26 years,” he nodded, “of life you have seen more than I have in mine.”
“Time is short.” He flashed a grin. “I don’t care to waste it,” and then he kissed her deeply.
Cagila slid her hands into his hair and kissed the prince back with equal passion. His mouth danced over hers, and then nipped at the flesh of her neck. “I have watched you.” He whispered in her ear, and the honey-sweet desire in his voice coated her thickly. “At practice, at play…and all the while I wondered just what you would feel like in my arms. How you would feel wrapped about me.”
She dragged in a breath at his words and shuddered. “You are more than welcome to find out, Rafiq.”
He pulled back and smiled slowly. A smile like a hunter cat who has trapped his prey. The smile of a man well used to getting just what he wanted one way or another. Cagila felt her heart race further at the smile and answered it with one of her own.
They barely moved when the knock echoed on the door. A polite tap well used to waiting for permission to enter, it paused and then requested again.
“Come in.” Rafiq called, and slowly stepped away from Cagila. “Annie, it is good to see you.”
The red-headed young woman seemed unfazed by the stunning blonde elf standing in the middle of the room. Cagila notice with a smile she only had eyes for the prince. “You as well, my lord.” The consternated expression on Rafiq’s face told Cagila that this was a point of contention between them.
The maid met her gaze and winked carefully, her green eyes filled with mischief, and Cagila was forced to turn to the window to hide her muffled laughter. It was not fast enough though, and Rafiq heaved a beleaguered sigh as he stared up at the ceiling. “You’ll both be conspiring against me now, I just know it.”
“Have a good night, my lord, my lady.” Annie set the tray on a nearby table and bobbed a curtsey before closing the door behind her. Rafiq sighed again and turned the lock on the door with a quiet click.
