Chapter 3: Why the rain is like God's hand
THAT DAY AFTER SCHOOL
Jessi sighed as she tilted her head up to the pouring rain and thanked God that she had gotten through another day at school. She loved the rain. It felt like God\'s hand coming down to pat her on the back and wash away her pain. She sometimes thought that she could hear Him in the wind saying \"Keep trying my brave, brave child.\" She sometimes wondered why she still believed in God when He never stopped any of the bad things that happened to her. But the truth of the matter was, she had a way out if she was only willing to take it. Except that, she made a bargain with the very devil many a year ago and she was determined to see it through to the bitter end. Just how bitter of and end it was going to be she had no way of knowing.
She sighed as she watched her little sister, Silver, splash about in the rain. There was going to be all hell to pay when they got home and their father saw her but Jessi didn\'t have the heart to tell her to stop. Silver so rarely ever laughed and smiled that Jessi would have held back the minions of hell just to experience it. It was moments like these that she realized it was worth it all. And the other moments when her step-mother Jamielynn thanked her and held her for a few precious seconds.
Jessi thought back to that other rainy night 14 years ago that everything changed so drastically. The night Jessi\'s real mother, Laura, and her twin sister Katie Lee were killed. Her mom had been taking her and Katie Lee out for ice cream even though it was very cold and rainy. Her mom was funny like that. Never doing what you expected her to. And then the crash. Jessi could literally feel the moment her mother and Katie died. She felt them ripped out of her chest. That was the moment the world as Jessi had known it was dead. Her father still wishes that she had been the one that died. And though no one ever got close enough to her to know it....... sometimes Jessi did too.
She shook herself to take her mind off of that and thought instead of the incident earlier today. Why did Joe do it Jessi wondered as she rounded the corner of her street. He should\'ve just let them beat her that she could\'ve handled. But the turmoil she was going through now felt like it would made her heart and head explode. Because that other emotion that had been in her eyes when he stopped it had been something she hadn\'t let herself feel for a long long time. And she didn\'t know if she could handle that emotion now. Not when she was so close to breaking. He gave her something she had thought was gone forever.
Hope.
