Chapter 3- The Vision

\"Don\'t look at me like that!\" Ania said, as her cheeks became a colour somewhat akin to crimson silk.

\"Oh, come on. You can\'t tell me that nothing was going on! I saw the way you were staring into his \'beautiful, bright green eyes\',\" Anele quoted as she lay down on her bed beside Ania, trying to control her fit of giggles. I know they were staring at each other, she thought. This will be interesting to follow.

\"And what about you, dear lady? Have you not any attraction for our own Prince Evan?\"

\"Well, I must say that he is nothing like his brother nor his parents in any respect. I wonder what should become of him?\" Anele said.

\"What do you mean? Have you had another… vision?\" Ania whispered, fear passing visibly across her eyes, which were so dark they were like to an endless portal one could get lost in.

Anele rolled over onto her back to stare up at the thatch roof. She had not been tortured with a vision for some months now, but that did not lessen the feeling of fear welling up in her stomach. She often got these feelings when something horrible was going to happen and it had started when Evan had stopped her in the street.

\"No, my dear Ania. I wish I were not so blessed as to have them. You know how they affect me so.\"

\"I think what you need is a day out of doors. Would you object to a swim in the river or a picnic in the fields?\" Ania asked, hoping to death that Anele would consent. She could already see the colour had drained from her friend\'s face.

\"I would not deny you another chance to catch a glimpse of your handsome… Eryk, was it?\"

Anele could not help teasing the girl as she went to put on a simple white cotton dress. Ania turned to her and scowled.

\"You can\'t possibly think of only wearing that!\"

\"Well why not?\" Anele asked. \"Besides, we will be swimming and riding this afternoon and I wish not to mar my more \'precious\' gowns.\"

\"If that is the way you will have it, but if we come upon any other people, you won\'t be dressed half as well as you should be.\"

Anele laughed openly now, \"I care not.\" And as she made her way towards the door, she indeed wondered whom she might run into this day.

Singing. That was all that he could hear. Singing so beautiful, so pure that he thought angels might come floating down from heaven this very moment. The strenuous ride with Eryk was just what he needed to get his mind off of Anele. There seems to be something different about her, he thought. She was so detached and yet the depths of her eyes show that even though her heart was well protected, she was a very passionate person indeed. She\'s so beautiful there is no possible way she could ever think me handsome.

At that depressing thought, he turned back towards the sound of rushing water. They were supposed to come to the river to clean up after the long ride, but considering that there were some ladies there, they did not want to disturb their peace. Evan stepped up to the bank, careful to keep is eyes diverted to a nearby tree.

\"Madams, may I inquire as to how much longer you intend to take?\"

At his words, the two women gasped and covered themselves as best they coulTheyThey moved towards the bank, wary that he might turn his eyes on them.

\"Eryk, would you do these ladies the honor of diverting your eyes also?\" Evan asked and with a glance noticed that the two women just happened to be Anele and Ania.

The pair made their way onto the bank, continually keeping their eyes on Evan and Eryk. They hurried to put on their dresses and being as wet as they were, they clung to their thin, curvy frames. Both girls sidestepped the men and began to walk into the autumn sunlight.

\"We\'re covered.\" Anele announced without a hint of surprise that the two men in whose company they found themselves were Eryk and Evan.

Evan turned towards the girls. Their hair was matted to their heads and the noon sunlight reflected brightly across the strawberry and auburn strands. It was fairly obvious that both of them were shivering, cold gripping their entire bodies. Evan decided that he would forgo a bath at the moment and walk the girls home, seeing as how there were brigands and robbers wandering in search of defenseless people.

\"If it pleases you, ladies, Eryk and I will walk you back to the village. There are robbers and thieves on these lone roads and we wouldn\'t take a chance in letting you get hurt,\" Evan stated, sincerely hoping that they would allow him to walk them to the village.

\"Thanks for your hospitality,\" Anele said. \"I\'m fairly sure we can handle ourselves, but do what you will.\" Avoiding his piercing gaze and the open warmth emanating from his eyes was harder to do than she thought.

\"Well then, let us begin,\" Eryk said. He was almost dying with the joy of being able to walk in Ania\'s company.

* * * * * * * * * *

Save for the cries of swallows in the trees, the walk was mainly led with silence. Once or twice Eryk would whisper something to Ania and she would break into a small giggle, but other than that, there was no speech between the party. The sun had waned in the sky and while right outside the village, Ania tripped and just as she was about to fall onto the ground, Eryk caught her in his strong arms. She blushed and thanked him graciously for helping her. It seems I cannot get away from his touch, Ania thought. He\'s so handsome and his muscles are so fine. If only I could be sure of his intentions. If he is anything like Evan, I\'m sure he\'s most noble of heart.

Just as Ania had finished this thought, Victor waddled out from behind a witchdoctor\'s hut. The sight of his enormous body in rich silks and his twisted, mangled face forced bile to rise into Anele\'s throat. At least Evan received the good genes in the family, she thought. And besides, he dressed like a normal villager, not a pompous pig.

\"Hello, my dear. It\'s been a while since I\'ve had the pleasure of seeing you,\" Victor spat, throwing his brother a vicious glare.

\"I hardly doubt it was pleasurable at our last meeting,\" Anele retorted. The annoyance growing in her face was visible to Evan.

\"I should beat you within an inch of your life for what you did to me, you little harlot!\" he exclaimed taking a step towards Anele.

Evan feared that he would try something to hurt her right here in the street so he grabbed her thin wrist and gently moved her behind him. He didn\'t know what had happened until he turned around and saw Anele crumple to the ground. The blood-curdling scream that emitted from her seemed as if it came from the very depths of her pure soul. Her eyes were clenched tightly closed and tears began streaming forth from the corners. The pain ripped through her entire body tearing her in two and she felt as if she was being crushed to death. Anele writhed in Ania\'s arms and cried out again. \"Ania!\" was the only thing that could be made out of the horrifying shriek. She then fell limp and her breathing was almost nonexistent. Ania began crying and trying to shake Anele awake.

\"Anele!\" Ania shouted. \"Hurry. Evan run inside and get a cold, wet cloth and bring it here!\"

Fear gripped Ania. She had seen Anele have visions before and she knew they were not pleasant, but she had never seen Anele have one of this intensity. She could only hope that it had not done any lasting damage to Anele\'s mind or even worse- her soul. As every woman with that ability knows, the visions were linked to the mind of the Seer to produce the images, and they were also linked to the soul, so that they could understand them and interpret them accordingly. The ability to see the flow of time in the form of visions was only ever passed to women in the families, since they were the ones who had the strength to endure it. Ania touched the small, ruby coloured teardrop that hung on Anele\'s brow as proof of her gift. One could hardly call this a gift, she thought.

Evan came back carrying a sopping cloth and Ania took it from him, wrung some water from it, and gently wiped Anele\'s face. Anele started and woke up opening her eyes sluggishly.

\"How are you, lady?\" Evan asked, his brows furrowed in concern.

\"Where are your parents, dear Evan?\" Anele whispered. All of her strength had been sapped out of her by the ferocity of the vision.

\"Why, they are at my home. Has something happened?\" Evan questioned.

\"I am not sure,\" Anele said slowly. \"You must rush home right now. Do make haste for you might be able to stop a horrible occurrence.\"

Evan stared at her quizzically before turning and jumping on his gray gelding. He kicked his horse into full gallop, turning him into the direction of the palace looming over the village.
