Crash I

Crash I

“I’m going for a shower.” Mary announced, but the elf’s barely headed her as they discussed the new disturbing development, hovering over Jack’s computer with Darrah tapping franticly at the key board. Mary was not happy with his plan, it was too dangerous for all of them, if your playing hide and seek you don’t go straight to the person looking for you, and she had told him as much. Better that Nearwen and Perran take off and re-hide the ship elsewhere on the planet; probably off the coast in the fathomless oceans. Not that the elf had listened. Instead she had received from Val and Rillian their; thank your for the concern, but we are elf’s who have lived for four hundred years, and you are just a mortal girl look.

“I smell like horse.” She said to no one in particular. Moreover the problem with having a frolic in the hay barn, was dried grasses miraculous ability to get everywhere that It had no business being. Her whole body ached from the days exertions and it was almost an orgasmic experience when the hot jet of water hit her.

After washing her hair she simply luxuriated in the sensation, turning the temperature up until it was almost scalding, slowly working the ache out of her muscles and filling the room with steam. Mary closed her eyes felling a little light headed. Must be the steam she thought and with a deep sigh went to turn the water off. As she opened her eyes little black spots danced before her vision. She went to grip the tap but found her fingers clumsy and week. Dispassionately she watched as the ceiling fell away and the black at the edge of her vision closed in.

Mary came to with a jolt, as the shower spray hammering down on her began to cool rapidly; the hot water in the storage tank running out. She found herself slumped down in the shower well and blinked the water out of her eyes in confusion. “What was I..?”

I fainted, she thought. But I never faint.

Shivering from the unwelcome cold spray, Mary reached up and turned off the water, before standing up like a shaky foal still feeling light headed. She staggered out of the shower and wrapped a towel about her trembling form before sitting down on the floor, her back to the radiator head between her knees.

There was a knock at the door. “Mary, are you alright in there?” Val called, sounding slightly plaintive. He was like a puppy sometimes; he hated to be left on his own for overly long.

“Yeah, I will be out in a second.” Mary replied.

“Oh alright then.” He replied. “Your mother has said food will soon be served.”

“Ok, I will be down in a moment.”

She listened as he retreated down the corridor. For a moment she had been about to tell the elf that she had fainted, but considering that all she had managed to keep down in the last twenty four hours was some sugary tea, and she had just boiled herself in the shower it was no wonder that she had passed out. There was little point in worrying him, Val was smothering enough without spurring him in to his full overprotective mode.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Where is Mary?” Rillian asked as he approached Valdagerion, retrieving the combat suits from where they had stowed them in Mary’s car boot. Dusk was just beginning to settle on the horizon and they were impatient to begin their task.

“She’s sleeping.” Valdagerion replied.

“Rhi’ Valdagerion, she is getting worse.” Rillian said with concern.

Valdagerion nodded, “I believe that your right. That’s why it is important that we find out just what this MI7 is doing quickly, and find a way to get the ship free of them so that it will be safe to bring Mary to Perran.”

“Agreed.”

They looked up as Darrah’s and Jack’s feet crunched on the gravel. “Ok, so your ok with the sat nav?”

Darrah nodded, a odd black box in his hand. “Thank you for this, it should be helpful even with our wrist computers.”

“You said you wanted some help with something?” Mary’s brother asked as he came closer.

“Yes with operating this contraption.” Valdagerion pointed to Mary’s small silver car, he had already pilfered the keys from the bowl on the dresser.

“You’re going already?”

“The longer we wait, the more chance they will find our ship. We can not allow that Jack.” Valdagerion explained.

“You’re not taking Mary?”

“It is too dangerous.” Valdagerion frowned. “No harm must come to her.”

“I understand.” Jack nodded, then looked worried. “I know that you elf’s are quick learners, but even if I teach you how to drive the car, you don’t have the time for me to go through all the highway code and…”

“It’s unnecessary.” Valdagerion replied dismissively. “But I will need to borrow your memory’s Jack.”

Jack glanced at Darrah. “Is he being serious? Or is it a miss-translation?”

Darrah patted Jack’s shoulder. “He’s being serious. We elf’s can read the minds of other’s, including memory’s. They are after all a physical part of the brain, it’s just a matter of translating the electronic pulses.”

Jack looked up at Valdagerion, who met his gaze frankly. “Ok, do what you need to do.”

The elf came forwards, placing his hands on the human boy’s head griping it softly between his long fingers. “Try to think about that vehicle. It will be easier that way.” The elf advised.

It was done quickly and as considerately as Valdagerion could manage, nether the less Jack dropped like a stone to his knees when it was done, gasping as if he had just emerged from deep water.

“Forgive me, I expect that was unpleasant.” Valdagerion replied, as he guided the young man to sit down on the floor, pushing his head between his knees. “Just concentrate on taking a few deep breaths’ I have heard it helps.”

“It’s alright. I volunteered.” Jack panted.

“Are you alright now?” Valdagerion inquired after a moment.

“I think so.” Jack nodded, and the Elf helped him up. “Did you get everything that you need?”

“Yes.”

“Good, I don’t think I would want to go through that again.”

“Stout fellow!” Rilian laughed, and clapped Jack on the shoulder, who grinned ruefully up at the elf’s rubbing his shoulder. Smiling like that his eye’s were much like Mary’s; that humour lurking in the deep blue depths waiting to emerge.

“Here we go then.” Rillian sighed looking wearily at the small silver car.

“You’re going to be alright, you don’t need me to come?” Jack asked hopefully, now somewhat more recovered.

Valdagerion spoke as folded himself in to the small car, adjusting the seat back, the other elf’s following suit. “You must stay here and look after Mary for me. Tell her that I will be back soon.”

“Ha. If she will let me look after her!” Jack scoffed.

“Quite.” Valdagerion replied. “Do your best with her, I know how wilful she can be.”

“You don’t know the half of it!” Jack drummed on the top of the car as Valdagerion started the engine up. “Good luck.”

Valdagerion revved up the engine, before he crunched the gears, wincing at the noise but soon got the hang of the controls. His quick mind began to process Jack’s memories on the ways of human roads as he navigated down the drive. Gaining confidence he picked up speed, and by the time he had got on to the main road on the way to the village, he was up and down the gears with ease.

Valdagerion grinned across at Rillian. “I think I have mastered this craft.”

Rillian huffed and crossed his arms. “That’s hardly something to be proud of.” He groused. He winced and readjusted himself in the seat. “I have followed you in to all sorts of bad situations; the lightless sinkholes of Cen O’ Teh, that year on Lallandal in the Jarhn rain forest, and when we crashed down on the southern ice cap of Khron II’s second moon, you know how much I hate the cold – oh and there was that refrigerated container; but this moving cupboard with wheals has to be the worst.”

“You forgot the putrid swamps of Ahergath.”

Rillian visibly shuddered. “I stand corrected. That was the worst.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary had recently developed a keen instinct for trouble. And as she lay on the sofa, drowsing, she realised that the house was by far too quiet. She woke hoping that she was wrong, knowing that she was not. Rubbing her bleary eyes, she went and looked out of the kitchen window to see that her car was absent. Intuitively she knew that the elf’s had gone.

Val had gone.

Bleak despair yawned before her, but soon it turned in to blind panic. She took the nearest car keys on the way through before grabbing a wax coat, hopping in to her wellys. In her hurry she ran in to Jack who yelped in surprise as she accidently trod on his foot. “Mary, where’s the fire?”

“How long ago did they go?” Mary demanded but did not wait for an answer, as she trotted across the gravel. She could still smell the petrol fumes in the air, along with Val’s oh so familiar sent, so they could not have gone long ago.

As she was clambering up in to her parents Rangerover Jack was at her door. “Mary what are you doing?”

“I’m going after them. Are you coming, if not get out of the way?”

“Val said that you had to stay here.” Jack said firmly.

“I bet.” She growled. “It’s just the arrogant thing he would say.”

With that she slammed the door shut and turned the key, letting the four-by –four’s engine growl. Jack managed to scramble in the other side before she pulled off. She roared down the drive, and out on to the road having a good idea where the elf’s were headed.

Jack was holding the hand rail above his head, but Mary did not even spare him a glance as she threw the truck around another corner.

“I am not behaving like a crazy bitch.” Mary snarled.

“I didn’t say that.” He protested.

“I heard you.” She glanced out of the corner of her eye to see Jack staring at her as if she had just turned purple with yellow spots. “What?”

“I didn’t say it.” He said. “But I thought it.”

Mary cursed under her own breath at her own slip up. She had wanted to keep that odd new skill to herself.

“You read my mind?”

“Its something that I just sort of picked up being around the elfs.” Mary explained hastily.

“Could they teach me?”

Mary gave a little incredulous shake of her head.

“Aww, they are going to be pissed at me for letting you follow them.”

She levelled stone hard look upon him. “Yeah, but who are you more afraid of?”

“Hmm, super strong aliens who cause power surges, or my older sister with the ability to atomic wedge me. Tough choice.”

Just out of the village she caught up with them, flashing her lights angrily at them. There was some obvious confusion amongst the elf’s as to what this heralding meant, but accelerating forwards she managed to catch Val’s eyes in the mirror. Surprisingly he quite calmly indicated and pulled over on the side of the room. Mary yanked the wheel and pulled up behind them with considerably less sangfroid.

“What are you doing?!” Mary demanded as Valdagerion wound the window down.

“I might ask you the same thing.” Val answered, his face inscrutable, but from the hard set of his mouth she knew he was mildly annoyed. But he knew her well enough to know that she would try and follow. The lf got out of the car. “I already told you of our plans. Mary you should go back to your parent’s home and wait for us. It’s too dangerous for you to come.”

“If it’s too dangerous for me, then why on earth are you going?” Mary argued. “You don’t know a thing about MI7, or what they are capable of.”

“Mary, we have fought in all kinds of skirmishes, battles, and espionage missions. Rillian and I are the elite of our kind, which makes us the most effective fighting force in the known universe.”

“We have a saying here, pride comes before a fall.”

Val’s eyes narrowed a cold fractional degree. “And what is that supposed to mean?”

“It means that you males are all the same. You would rather do something stupid then admit that you are worried even a little. That’s why you won’t ask for bloody directions.”

The elf was clearly confused. “I’m not sure what you are angry about. Mary can you not just trust that we are capable of what we say we can do. I have not lived this long by making mistakes.”

“That’s rich I met you because you had just made a colossal mistake.” Mary pointed out poking him on the chest. “Remember that?”

“It was an uncharacteristic mistake.” Val replied, catching hold of her accusing finger and gently biting upon it. “One that lead me to meeting you. So perhaps fate had her hand in it.”

It was hard to stay angry at the elf when he was looking at her like that, but Mary was going to try. But dam the elf knew he was winning with that crooked smile. “You really are unbelievable! Val you can’t just drive a car.”

The elf frowned. “I am driving it.”

“No, I mean that you need a licence.”

“A licence?”

“You have to have passed a test.” She showed him her own driving licence, and the elf studied over it. “If you get pulled over without one there will be hell to pay.”

“We do not want their authority’s scrutiny.” Rillain nodded sagely.

“Then we will incapacitate any police.” The elf tripped over the unfamiliar word police.

“You can’t!” Mary exclaimed horrified.

“It’s actually very easy, a quick bio electric shock. A small one mind.” He grinned at Mary. “We wouldn’t want to kill them.”

“Someone’s going to get killed around here.” Mary growled, but it was in good humour.

“Come, we are wasting time. Mary you will return with you brother immediately and await our return.”

“No.”

“What do you mean no?”

The elf was growing frustrated, but Mary would not back down now, her pride was not going to let her. She hated when he spoke to her like this, as if she was some silly child. It made her feel useless. “You heard me. Or here’s it in your language, Lau. Got it now? I’m not going back home, where you go I go.”

“I’m not taking you with me. I have already told you.” The elf was really annoyed now. Autocratic he was not used to being disobeyed, he caught her by the top of her arms, his grip almost painfully hard as he glared down at her.

Mary shrugged refusing to be intimidated. “You can’t stop me. I can just follow you. You don’t have the right to tell me what to do, I have just as much at stake.”

Val’s diamond eye’s flashed dangerously. “Really.” He kissed her suddenly, bruising, so their teeth clattered together, and almost bending her right back. He then released her before she could feel embarrassed to be so thoroughly ravaged in front of Val’s companions and her brother. Val pushed her aside and stalked up to the range rover, and shoving both hands hard down on the front of the bonnet stove it in, before cracking it open. “This looks vital.” He said pulling some part of the engine out and crushed it in his hand, before dropping it to the floor and brushed his hands off.

Mary was rendered speechless with ire. He had just destroyed her dad’s car.

“This is for your own good.” Val stated, walking back to her. But she shoved him off before he could get close again.

“Since when did you know what was good for me, you just keep causing trouble. Ever since I met you I have been in constant danger. Just like now.”

“Fine.” He growled, and then got back in to the car and slammed the door crossly, rocking the whole vehicle violently, before driving off without a backwards glance, disappearing around the corner like a rally car driver; leaving her feeling utterly shell shocked.

“Well can’t say you didn’t deserve that old girl.” Jack said as the dust settled.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Hey Mary what did the metric alien say?” Jack asked. When he got no answer he carried on regardless. “Take me to your litre!”

“Not helping Jack.”

“If athletes get athlete's foot, what do elves get?” he paused again for effect. “Mistle-toes!”

“Finished now?” Mary asked, drumming her fingers on the bar. Stuck without a phone, they had walked the short distance to the Three Horse Shoes and borrowed the land lord’s phone to let their parents know that they had totalled another car. Mary was leaving Jack to coming up with a credible lie. They sat and waited for the AA as she spun the bottle top of her soft drink on the bar top brooding.

“You know that it’s probably for the best. I mean what do you know about stealth and sabotage. You being there would have just distracted them.”

Mary sighed and stretched her arms out on the bar. Truth was she knew on some level Jack was right, but she was still more then just a little pissed off with the elf. First he tried to sneak off. And he could have wheedled her round with those eyes, that seductive smile of his, and when his voice took on that warm rich tone she would do anything for him; but instead he had ordered her. She wasn’t a slave, or even one of his troops, he couldn’t just tell her what to do. And now Jack was not helping with his comments which were making the burrs of insult just go deeper in to her pride.

Still it was hopeless, there was no way that she was going to catch up with them now. By the time that the AA had arrived and they had got back home the elf’s would be long gone. And truth was she was worried about them. If anything happened to Val….

What if she never got to make up with him?

What if when they found the ship he was so annoyed with her that he just left?

Rubbing a hand over her eye wearily as another headache came on Mary suddenly saw her deliverance. Jody was just drawing in to the yard. Jack who had been taking a swig of his cider had not noticed, and Mary saw her chance. “I’m going to the loo.” She suddenly announced standing up.

Fortunately the loos were close to the side entrance, so Jack would not be suspicious. As soon as she was out of his sight she jogged out in to the car park, to where Jody was just parking up in her parents beat up Land rover. Mary jumped in to the passenger seat surprising her friend. “I will explain as we go along, but I really need to get to the Elan valley.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite her mercenary and voracious attitude towards sexual relations, Jody was at heart a romantic. And so it had not been hard to persuade her to drive out to the lake when Mary explained to her that they had had a bad argument and she wanted to make up. Truth was she would probably have been sold on the fact that Rillian and Darrah were both there, never one to pass up the opportunity of flirting with hot men.

It was good to talk with someone about her feelings, although avoiding the whole alien issue Mary was still able to chew over the theoretical issues of dating a foreigner with Jody. It was something Jody was somewhat of an expert on, her life time ambition being to sleep with a cute man from every major nationality.

But as they negotiated the mountain roads, the nagging headache that Mary had was growing worse. “Do you mind if I switch this off?” She asked reaching forwards to the radio control. “I have a migraine.”

“Sure.” Jody shrugged. “There’s probably some paracetamol in my hand bag.”

“I had better not, I have been popping those things like sweeties for days, but it just won’t shift.”

“You should see a doctor about that.”

“You’re probably right. It’s nothing that can’t wait though.” Mary closed her eyes, hoping to elevate at least some of the ache. “Is it just me or is it cold in here, even my skin feels numb?”

“The heating’s on.”

Mary frowned looking down at her hands, only to notice dark spots before her eyes, and a sudden queasiness.

“Could you pull over, I think that I am going to be sick.” Mary asked.

The road was clear, and Jody just drew over. Dizzy Mary stumbled out of the car almost tripping over herself, her limbs feeling heavy and clumsy. Her vision faded in and out and her chest felt suddenly tight. She wanted to call out, but suddenly the ground was much closer then she remembered it, and like a kaleidoscope, first the world shrank, there were dancing colours, and then only black.
