They don't quit, do they?

“Hey, baby,” Jason murmured as he pulled Kevin in for a kiss. He just got finished changing after a quick shower. “You okay?”

“I’m fine!” Kevin wrinkled his nose.

It had been two weeks since he’d been attacked and Jason’s overprotective streak hadn’t waned a bit. It wasn’t that Kevin minded though. It felt oddly nice to have someone that concerned over his physical welfare. But Kevin knew if he let that show he’d be inviting more of those “girly” comments he loathed so much. So he pasted a scowl onto his small face and glowered at his boyfriend.

“Easy, Kev,” Ryan scolded in amusement. “Ryan’s just trying to make sure his sweetheart is okay.”

“Oh, so now YOU’RE making the comments?” Kevin sounded scandalized but inside he was laughing. It was fun to bait Ryan these days. He never realized what a dry sense of humor the other boy had. Well, back in California it wasn’t so much dry as it was cruel. But now Kevin reveled in its new incarnation.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ryan smiled back innocently.

Jason watched the scene with a mixture of amusement and slight jealousy. He knew that Ryan had no designs on Kevin, but the two were now able to get close while they watched Jason on the court. He didn’t think Kevin was keeping any secrets from him, but the thought that Ryan might be Kevin’s new confidant bothered him somehow.

Footsteps behind him drew his attention and he turned to face his fellow co-captain. Mark glared at him coldly then swept his eyes over to Kevin.

“I see your ‘girlfriend’ is still here,” he taunted. “So nice that he comes to every practice.”

“He likes to be with me,” Jason shot back. “Unlike YOUR girlfriend, who’s probably sucking off one of your friends right about now.”

“Watch it!” Mark’s eyes narrowed to slits. “And speaking of sucking off, Eric told me he’s looking forward to the end of his suspension.”

“He better hope his parents transfer his ass,” Jason growled.

“Yeah, we’re ALL waiting for him and the others to come back,” Joey interjected as he walked up behind Jason and cracked his knuckles.

“Your sister may have stopped Tanya’s dad from causing trouble here, Brennan,” Mark smirked, “but you can’t be with him all the time. He can’t come on the bus with us to the games and those schmucks,” he gestured to Joey and Randy, “have their own practices to go to. Eric and Dan have nothing but time on their hands.”

“Just like me,” Ryan hissed in a deathly quiet voice as he stepped forward to stand toe to toe with Mark. “And I can promise you they won’t get by me.”

“Who are you anyway?” the other boy replied. “You don’t even go to this school.”

“I’m Kevin’s cousin,” Ryan said without batting an eyelash. “I chose my college to be closer to him. And I’ll be damned if I let you hurt him.”

“You shouldn’t even be on campus!” Tanya piped up, fixing her sweater as she approached the group. “You’re over 18 and not even a student.”

Ryan held up a white card and waved it at her. “Special permission from the principal himself. He agrees with me that Kevin’s a target and since I’m family and all . . .”

“You don’t even look like him!” she shrieked. “The other cousin I saw over the summer looks more alike him than you!”

“Ah, my other cousin, and Kevin’s BROTHER, Brian.”

“Brother?!”

“Too busy with the boys to keep up with the news, huh, Tanya?” Joey asked with a smile. He looked at her closely. “Looks like you missed a button there.”

“Shut up!” she yelled turning around to fix herself. “I just got done with cheerleading practice.

“Bet that’s what you always say,” Randy smirked.

“Go back to your freaky girlfriends!”

“We intend to,” Joey grinned.

“You a fag, too?” Mark asked, ignoring the spectacle Tanya was making of herself and focusing on Ryan.

“Why? You interested?”

“HELL, NO!” Mark screamed.

“Good, ‘cause you’re not my type.”

Jason and Kevin exchanged unreadable glances, both wondering if Ryan wasn’t making an informal declaration they should be paying attention to.

“Whatever,” Mark hissed. “Let’s go, Tanya!” He grasped her arm and led her away. “Don’t forget your date with Eric, Kevin!” he called over his shoulder.

“You tell Eric not to forget his asshole’s date with my foot!” Joey called back.

Kevin was trembling slightly as he watched Mark walk away. Jason frowned and held him closer to his side, kissing his cheek and mumbling comforting things in his ear.

“He won’t get near you, Princess,” he whispered to the blonde. “I’ll kill him first.”

“Those assholes need a lesson in tact,” Joey muttered bitterly.

“Actually, I think Kevin needs lessons,” Ryan said thoughtfully as he eyed the frightened blonde in Jason’s arms.

“What?” Jason grunted.

“He’s right about one thing, Jase,” Ryan sighed. “Kevin won’t be with you 24/7 until the basketball season’s done.” When Jason made a move to protest, Ryan waved him off. “You know if you quit everything I said would happen will, and then some. You SAW how those two were, and that’s WITH people surrounding you. What do you think they’ll be like when the other five get back?”

“That’s assuming they come back,” Kevin replied weakly. “Gina filed charges on my behalf and there were a lot of witnesses to corroborate the facts.”

“Be that as it may,” Ryan shrugged. “You know what happens to bullies who come from money.” His face reddened and he looked down. “I’m afraid you know all too well.”

“Beating yourself up over something that you can’t change isn’t going to help us solve this,” Joey said as he thumped Ryan on the back. “And you know damned well that Brian and Kevin don’t think of you like that anymore. Now, tell us what you have in mind.”

Ryan sighed and pushed his dark brown hair back from his forehead with one thick hand. He hated that those guys reminded him of himself and Matt. He knew though that he had an opportunity to change Kevin’s future at least.

“Well, Brian said he felt a hell of a lot better after he used some of the fighting moves Matt and I taught him on Gary and Darren. I think if I teach a few of those to Kevin, he won’t feel as scared and helpless.”

“Yes!” Kevin shouted. “Yes, that’s a great idea!”

“Are you sure?” Jason frowned.

“He won’t be able to learn much from me,” Ryan offered. “But it would be enough to get away if something WERE to happen. Which it won’t, since I plan to be there every second you’re not.”

“Sounds like plan,” Joey smiled.

“Okay, well let’s just get home now,” Jason sighed and pulled Kevin down the hallway. He just wanted to get the small blonde into bed and hold him until he stopped shaking. “You staying for dinner?” he asked Ryan.

“Uh, I can’t tonight.”

“Why not?” Randy demanded.

“I have a date.”

“A date?” Kevin and Joey asked at the same time.

“Yeah, you know. One of those things people do together when they want company. You remember those.”

“Shut it,” Joey smirked. “We all still go on dates even if we are in relationships. It’s nice to know you don’t have to put up a front, though. That’s a BIG advantage to having a steady girl. Right, Jay?”

Jay threw him a smile but remained silent, not wanting to incur Kevin’s wrath when the blonde was still upset about Eric.

“So, who is she?” Randy asked.

“Someone from school,” Ryan answered evasively.

“What’s her name?”

“You don’t know her.”

“We know that,” Joey piped in smiling. “We just want to know about her. See if we approve.”

“Name’s Lee,” Ryan replied with irritation.

“Leigh?” Kevin asked for clarification.

“Uh . . . yeah.”

Jason eyed him oddly and Ryan looked down quickly.

“Jay?” Kevin asked in the darkness of the night while he lay in his lover’s arms. The trembling had finally subsided and he now reveled in the warmth Jason was emitting.

“Hmm?”

“Do you not want me to learn to take care of myself?”

Jason quirked his eyebrow up curiously wondering what Kevin was getting at. “It’s not that.”

“You just don’t want me to not need you,” Kevin said as he lifted his head to gaze up at his lover.

“No,” Jason admitted quietly.

“I’ll never NOT need you,” Kevin smiled sweetly. “I just want to learn how to be able to get away if you’re not there.”

“I know,” Jason smiled back. “I just like being your knight in shining armor.”

“Am I still breathing?” Kevin asked.

“Um, yeah,” Jason replied.

“Then you’re still my knight in shining armor,” the blonde smiled and kissed him soundly. “And you always will be.”

“I love you, Kevin.”

“I love you, too.”

They kissed for long moments, not wanting anything more right now but each other’s warmth. When they finally parted Kevin smiled and lay his head back down on Jason’s chest.

“Jay?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you think Ryan’s Leigh is really a . . . well ‘Lee’?”

“I don’t know for sure,” Jason chuckled. “But I suspect.”
