Chapter 18
The Sea Noose
I woke up to an empty bed, something that was really starting to bug me when it happened. I sighed and flung the covers off of me, turning side to side, cracking my back. I yawned and stretched my arms over my head and stood up, walking over to the dresser to pull out a loose tank top and slipped it over my head.
I opened the door, rubbing the sleep from my eyes and walked down the hallway towards the living room. Vitas was lying on the floor in front of the fireplace, snoozing happily. I sighed softly and turned back around and walked into the kitchen.
On the table there was a glass vase, one I had never seen before, with a dozens roses sitting in them, their bottoms submerged in water. I cocked my head to the side, my eyes looking at each petal I could see and trailing down each stem slowly. There were thorns on each forest green stem, the bottoms of each thorn a dark red, the tip matching the color of the stem. The petals looked like they were made of small patches of silk with curved corners.
A stark, crisp, white envelope caught my eye, stuck on a plastic holder hidden within the roses. I walked slowly towards the table, my steps short and measured. When I reached the table I took the white envelope from the plastic holder and looked at it. There was nothing written on the front, the whiteness remaining unbroken. I turned it over and lifted up the unsealed flap which revealed a simple white card.
I pulled it from the envelope slowly, making sure to not bend any of the paper. I turned the small card over and stared at the black, calligraphy writing. The lines arched and swirled smoothly, looking like the small waves in a sea pool as they swirled around. I stared at the letters, following each curve and line they made, crossing over each other. My finger traced the lines lightly, barely brushing against the paper.
The words were as black as the night sky, the curves of the letters extending into the next. I smiled to myself as I read the words out loud, my voice the only sound in the still kitchen, sounding loud, even to my own ears.
“I love you.”
I smoothly slid the card back into the envelope and placed it on the table in front of the simple glass vase. I pulled one of the roses up from the vase, bringing the petaled bud to my nose and inhaled deeply. My eyes fluttered closed as the sweet aroma of rose bombarded my senses with a hint of cinnamon added. I smiled softly, opening my eyes and carefully placed the rose back into the vase, putting it back in between the two roses it had been in between before I had taken it out.
My fingers lightly traced a few petals of some other roses, delighting in how smooth they felt to touch. I smiled and carefully picked up the vase, making sure that my feet were planted firmly on the floor before lifting it up, grasping it firmly in my hands so I wouldn't drop it. I slowly walked from the kitchen and down the hallway.
My footsteps were short and steady, my knuckles turning white from grasping the vase so hard. I bumped the hidden door open with my hip, slowly stepping onto the first step before making my way up the stairs cautiously. Each step I took upwards seemed to make the vase feel heavier, my hands tightened further to keep the vase from falling. I sighed softly when I reached the top of the stairs, glad that I could put the vase down soon.
I slowly walked over to the desk and carefully set the vase down on the open desk top, all the papers had been moved downstairs so I could put them all together and write my journal. I pushed the vase into the center of the desk and stood back, cracking my knuckles as I did so. I cocked my head to the side as I looked at the roses, looking at how a few of them turned and twisted one way, while others turned and twisted another way.
I walked back up to the desk, crouching down in front of it as I opened one of the middle drawers, pulling out a fresh and unused sketch pad and a few sharpened pencils. I walked over to the wall opposite the desk and slid down it, the sketch pad resting against my knees. The pencil was poised elegantly above the pristine paper of the pad, waiting to be set down and start drawing.
I bit my lip gently between my teeth and set the tip of the pencil down onto the paper and let it flow smoothly over the paper, small arches of lines appearing on the paper. Small petals unfurled and bloomed, taking shape, thorns sprouting up from the stems on the paper. Small leaves unfolded and sprouted out from the stems.
The tip of the pencil moved away for a moment, arching inwards and downwards, moving to the other side and repeating the motion, a straight line connecting them. My eyes skittered upwards, looking at the roses, the pencil continuing to move across the paper smoothly and swiftly. I looked back down, the pencil swirling around the tops of the lightly drawn roses, the tops looking like small pools of spirals.
The pencil lofted from the paper, hovering over it as I looked back up again, cocking my head to the side and staring at the desk, it's wooden drawers and frame. The pencil hit the paper again, smooth, straight lines coming from the tip as the desk was added to the scene. I watched as the pencil started drawing the window behind the desk, soft rays of light sparkling through the water in the vase.
The pencil lifted itself from the paper and I set it down, bringing the paper up to look at it, my eyes tracing the curves of the lines that had been drawn. I smiled softly and pushed myself up, the wall supporting me. I walked over to the desk, setting the sketch pad on the top of it, the pencil lying still on the paper. I cupped a rose in my hand and leaned down, my nose pressing against the soft petals as I inhaled the wonderful scent again.
I let go of the rose and straighted up and turned around, making my way back down the stairs. I softly closed the door behind me and smiled to myself as I walked down the hallway into the kitchen again. The white envelope was still on the table and I left it there, content with the fact it was sitting there for whenever I wanted it. I grabbed a can of dog food and emptied it into a clean bowl, taking it into the living room and took Vitas' other bowl into the kitchen, setting it in the sink to wash later.
I stretched and yawned softly, walking out of the kitchen and back to my bedroom, into the bathroom. I turned on the water in the bathtub, making sure that it was going to get hot and put the plug in before I took off my tank top and slid mys shorts and underwear off. I stood in front of the mirror and brushed my hair, waiting for the watter to fill most of the tub.
There was already steam fogging up the top of the mirror when I slipped into the almost too hot water. I sighted softly, my eyes closing as my head rested against the back of the tub. My body relaxed down into the water, the steam making the air thick and warm. My breathing was deep and centered, the water sending small tingles down my spine. Because my eyes were closed, my ears were picking up the smallest of sounds. I could hear the soft thump of Vitas' tail as he continued to sleep next to the fire, the fire itself crackling away, burning more wood and keeping most of the house warm.
It was because my ears were picking up the smallest of sounds that I heard the door open ever so quietly and soft footsteps pad into the kitchen and set something down. I smiled and opened my eyes when I heard the footsteps start walking down the hallway, towards my bedroom. I turned my head towards the door and my smile grew bigger when I saw Cian come to stand in the doorway, wearing only a pair of pajama bottoms with the sides of lacy underwear showing over his hips.
“Good morning, Kassy.”
“Good morning, Cian. Where have you been?” he smiled mysteriously and shrugged.
“Oh, I've been out for a bit.” I closed my eyes.
“Mhm.” he walked over to the tub and leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead.
“How much longer do you think you'll be, Kassy?” I shrugged, displacing the water.
“Oh, a little while. I just got into the water and it feels too good to be moving for a few minuets.” he gave me another kiss and walked back to the door.
“Well, when you do get out of the tub, just give me a yell ok?” I nodded and sank lower into the warm water. I heard his footsteps walk back down the hallway and into the kitchen. I tuned out the sound of things moving around and things being set down in various places and just relaxed, enjoying my bath.
My hair was mostly dry after I had towel dried it. I was standing in front of my dresser, pulling out a pair of dark blue lacy underwear, a pair of short cotton shorts and a black tank top. I pulled them on and stood in the doorway leading to the hall.
“Cian?” I called.
“Yes?”
“I'm done with my bath, so this is your call.” there was some shuffling before he answered me.
“Alright, come into the living room, Kassy.” I rolled my eyes and walked down the hallway and stopped in the doorway to the living room, my eyes wide as I looked around the room.
There were red candles on every surface, spaced evenly and they were all burning brightly. Each candle had a bloomed rose sitting next to it, the whiteness of it contrasting with the red candle perfectly. My eyes traced the string of light pink lights handing from the all of the walls.
The couch had been moved to the side, the middle of the room clear of everything. Cian was standing in the middle of the room, still wearing his pair of pajama bottoms, the lace underwear showing slightly over his hips. His hands were behind his back and he was looking at me.
“Kassy?” his voice was nervous and he shuffled again. I blinked a few times, trying to clear my head. I walked slowly towards him and he cleared his throat, grabbing my hand with one of his own.
“Kassy... I love you with all of my heart and I would do anything for you, no matter what it is as long as you ask it of me.” he kneeled on the floor in front of me and I sucked in a deep breath, not believing this to be true.
“Will you make me happiest man alive and let me marry the woman I love?” he held up his other hand, holding a small open jewelery box. My eyes stared at the ring in amazement, the silver sparkling in the light from the candles, lights and fireplace. There was a small emerald in the middle of the ring, two smaller diamonds sitting on its sides. I looked into Cian's eyes and tears spilt over mine.
“I... Cian, I...” I dropped to my knees in front of him and crushed my lips against his. My hands cupped his cheeks and I whispered against his lips,
“Yes, Cian... yes.” his fingers nimbly slipped the ring on to my finger, my chest sucking in breaths of air as more tears spilt over my eyes.
“I love you, Kassy. And now, I can show you that I love you everyday... forever.” I looked into his eyes and I could've sworn I could see his soul within the depths.
“Forever.”
