The Baby is Mine
Shai sat in Mr. Tennison’s office after her first day of school. She was quitting the tennis team, she would have to now. Strenuous work of that kind would be dangerous for the child, and suddenly she was becoming very worried about the life in her body. Mr. Tennison was not looking at her. His fingers were pinching his nose as he tried not to focus on the girl sitting in front of him. He wasn’t careful; he knew he had not been careful. All he had thought about was how good and dangerous it felt being inside someone so innocent.
“Why didn’t you talk to me about it?” he asked of her.
Shai gave him an incredulous look of remorse and hatred. “When was I supposed to tell you?” she asked him, her soft tone covered in small biting fangs. Somewhere during her ordeal the girl had begun to grow a backbone. “Was that when you and I had sat down and had a conversation about your plans to marry Mrs. Chenbaro?”
“Shai, I don’t have to explain myself to you,” he snapped. “I never made any type of commitment to you.”
Shai spread her hands wide, showing him exactly the same effect. “Just as I do not have to explain myself to you,” she said. “It may be your seed inside of me, but this is in no way going to be your child. I want more for this baby than a daddy married to some rich sugar-momma.” She could not believe she just said it, but she felt good having said it. Her body straightened and she almost smiled, except that Mr. Tennison had stood up and moved around the desk to take her in his arms. He was so sudden about it she gave no resistance. She was quickly pulled against his chest and she was breathing him in.
“I want this child,” he told her. It was the only truth he had ever really told her. “I don’t want to give up my rights to it.”
“Mr. Tennison,” she began, pulling her little fists up and trying to push him away. She began to slide back but his hands were stronger and brought her close, his mouth moving down and crushing her mouth against his. She resisted for a moment, then melted into the kiss. He was the only man she had ever known physically, she did not know if he was good or not, she did know that she enjoyed herself more than she would have liked to.
His hands were traveling her body, over her stomach, feeling the flatness of it and picturing what was growing underneath. He began to push the girl’s blouse up and to feel the curves of her breasts, taking in her swell of them, the firmness, and noticing that her bra no longer fit correctly. Her breasts had already begun to fill up.
Mr. Tennison began to pull the bra down and away from her breasts when a sudden knock on the door brought their attention away from one another. Shai was grateful for the interruption, not able to pull away herself.
“Mr. Tennison,” a deep voice said smoothly from the doorway. Both student and teacher turned to see the magnificent specimen of male before them. Shinwa stood leaning against the doorjamb in a smooth way that would have most girls’ hearts fluttering. Even Shai, who was very much preoccupied, felt things low in her body start to tremble.
“What can I do for you, Kiseki?” Mr. Tennison asked stepping away from his fragile young student.
“I am here for Shai, actually,” Shinwa announced. “I thought she could use some company walking her home.”
“See you around school, Mr. Tennison,” Shai said tenderly. She walked out of the office without looking back, though her regrets came with her.
Shinwa and Shai walked a few feet before she looked up at him curiously. “Why did you come to that office?”
“Miss Oshidori is waiting for you outside,” Shinwa explained. “She didn’t think Mr. Tennison would take her seriously, so instead she asked me if I would go in and get you. I seem to be your permanent hero.”
Shai grimaced but said nothing. She walked in silence next to the man that she owed so much to and yet still did not have the strength to thank him. She still was not sure his saving her had been the best thing to ever happen to her, but it put her friends at ease, knowing she was still alive, and it definitely made her father happy. Knowing he had almost lost his daughter paled the idea of her being pregnant in his eyes. It paled the idea so much that he said he would be willing to raise the child. Shai was not sure that was the best idea, but she knew that her father would do best for her.
“So…” Shai trailed off, knowing she should say something to him, but not really knowing what to say to the lead singer of a band. Well, ex-lead singer. Yuki had told her over the phone what had happened. Shai was sorry she had made him think about it.
“I like this school,” Shinwa suddenly announced, stretching his arms over his head. “Once the initial rush of love for a lead singer of a band washed off, everyone is just pretty much easy going. There seems to be some great people in this school.”
“Why did you choose to go to this school?” Shai asked, trying to take an interest in the conversation.
“I was born in this town,” Shinwa admitted. “I thought it would be nice to come back here.”
“You were?” Shai asked, looking up at the singer. “You have an English accent.”
“I was raised in London most of the time,” Shinwa admitted. “Classical piano, singing, class, everything my mother wanted in me. Then I came home and was the lead singer of some punk band and dating a girl with pink hair who was the bassist.”
Shai shuffled her feet. “So you and Kyouteki were more than friends?” she asked, now regretting even more she had nearly jumped when he had just lost someone so close to her.
“At one time,” he admitted. “But not when she died. We had broken up a long time ago. She was just too hardcore, and all I wanted to do was sing and have fun. I was into the drug scene, and the sex scene, but… you outgrow it. Or, hey, at least I did.”
Shai was speechless. It did not make it any less painful that his friend had died even if they had not been dating still. She just did not know how to react to these types of things.
“Um,” Shai began, then just did not know what else to say.
Shinwa let out a relaxed laugh. “Don’t worry about it,” he said to her. “I guess I should not be telling you these things, but it’s nice to have someone around me that’s normal.”
“Normal,” Shai snorted, her voice suddenly filled with ridicule. “I do not believe I am what you would call normal. Yuki and Fuji, they are normal. Me, I am…”
“Normal,” Shinwa finished. “You made a mistake, to err is human.”
Shai sighed and no longer wanted to talk to this handsome singer. She saw Yuki sitting outside at the benches in the front of the school, Kago sitting pleasantly next to her, though Yuki was pulled further back than she would normally have been.
Shai and Shinwa walked to the bench together, though Shai was anything but leisurely. She was tense walking beside Shinwa, and worse when she saw Kago and was reminded of the red marks that had rimmed Yuki’s neck only a few days before. Yuki had tenderly touched those marks and said it was nothing big, but even Shai could see that they were the perfect size to Kago’s fingers. Fuji had later seen Yuki trying to spell ‘asphyxiation’ in her English notebook. Yuki passed it off as her new word of the day, but Fuji was hardly ignorant, and Shai, though quiet, knew something had gone wrong.
“Shinwa, Shai,” Yuki greeted. Kago seemed to cringe at Yuki so familiarly calling Shinwa by his given name. She did not even notice, just stepped around the bench and placed her arms around Shai while Shinwa looked on in wonder. “Thanks Shinwa,” she said cheerily. “Shai, I didn’t want you to make a mistake and let that bastard convince you of something you didn’t want to do.”
“So what are you girls up to tonight?” Kago asked, placing his hands behind his back.
“Studying,” they both said with their noses in the air.
“Our teacher decided that right before Christmas was the perfect time for everyone to suddenly have a great big huge test,” Yuki sighed. “Shai promised to help teach me some of this new math stuff.”
Yuki hurried to grip Shai’s hand and the two girls were suddenly racing away from the school leaving both men behind. Shinwa looked to Kago who watched his girlfriend go with a look on his face that made Shinwa’s stomach turn.
“See you later,” Shinwa waved, and simply walked away, though he made a note that he did not think it best to leave Yuki alone with the guy very long.
