Teardrops and Lies
Tear Drops and Lies
Once Cassandra had calmed down she crawled from the bed and over to her mother's lifeless body. She pulled her close and cradled Alexis in her arms. Small bits of skill and brain matter sticking to the wall where her head had rested. Seth walked over to Gabriel
"Ok-so who are you?" He asked sullenly.
"He's my brother." Cassandra said numbly from the floor where she sat with her mother.
Seth nodded with the understanding that he was not getting any more information, Gabriel
Stood up and looked at Seth.
"So. Just who the hell are you-and how do you know my sister?"
His voice was cold and slightly protective. It was Cassandra who answered again.
"He's my master." Her voice was distant and both men could tell that nothing else was needed to be said, from anyone.
"Would you mind binding him? I'm calling the authorities." Gabe said motioning to Jacob as he walked from the room towards the kitchen.
Seth took the rope that had been binding Gabe and tied Jacob up, making sure to pull extra hard when Jacob made moans of discomfort. Once Jacob was bound Seth walked over to Cassandra, he took a moment to take in her battered form. She had a deep dark purple bruise forming on her cheek and several more all over her body.
"Come on Cassie, we need to go." He said as he placed a hand on her back.
She nodded slowly and placed a kiss to he mother’s forehead. As she stood up Gabriel returned to the room.
“You two had better get going. The authorities are on their way and if they see you in your current state Cassandra---we'll they'll question.”
Seth nodded at Gabriel, still not sure if he trusted him. He led Cassandra wordlessly out of the room.
Cassandra brushed a stray tear away from her cheek as her eyes scanned the front page of the paper Seth read the next morning.
“-Woman found beaten to death in home-” “-No suspects as of yet-”
The headline sent shivers through Cassandra's body as the image of her father bashing her mother's skull against the wall flashed before her eyes. She found that she suddenly could not eat, no matter how hungry she was. Cassandra pushed her plate away, the soft scraping sound caught Seth's attention. He lowered the paper to look at her with soulful eyes.
"Cassandra-" He spoke softly,"-you really need to eat. It's not good for the baby for you to keep skipping meals."
He extended a hand to take hold of hers as he spoke. As his hand made contact, Cassandra flinched her hand away. Seth pulled his hand back slowly and knew the death of Cassandra's mother was still painful, as distant as they had been, it was shocking. Cassandra brushed a bit of hair behind her ear as she spoke.
“I think I'm going to go for a walk.” Her voice was shaky and her eye glistened with tears.
As she turned to stand up Seth could clearly see the deep, dark purple bruise on her pale cheek. He nodded and understood why she flinched away from his touch. She hadn't flinched from mourning the memories of her mother, but out of fear; and the dark purple stigma on her soft, pale skin was Seth's constant reminder. Once Cassandra had left the kitchen Seth stood up and began clearing away the breakfast dishes. When he heard the back door click closed he had just placed the last of the dishes in the sink. Seth sunk down into a kitchen chair and attempted to read the paper, but after reading the same line for the tenth time he gave up, the pain that had shown in Cassandra's eyes was haunting him. He loved Cassandra with all his heart but he sure as hell hadn't shown her that; Seth thought of the way he had treated her when he brought her home from the trade, the way he treated her this past weekend and the deep, dark stigma of a bruise he had left on her face. Seth shook his head, he didn't deserve her at all; hell the only thing he had given her since he bought her was bruises and a baby. Seth let out a deep breath and cursed under his breath as the thought crossed his mind.
“A baby she might not even want,” he said to himself.
As this registered in his mind, he stood up and retreated to his office. Cassandra closed her eyes and walked towards the lake. She cradled her belly and thought of how in just a few weeks she would be giving birth to a little baby. A wave of excitement washed over her, but just as quickly a wave of depression encased her. She sat down on the water bank.
“Seth said ‘'make me bare his children’; but what if he doesn't want it?” Cassandra whimpered.
She dropped her head into her hands and cried. Seth looked out of his office window and saw Cassandra collapse into tears at the waters edge. A knife of pain and guilt stabbed him in the heart.
“She really doesn't want this.”
He said softly as a few stray tears trekked down his cheeks. He walked over to his desk and opened the top drawer of his desk. Seth sunk into his high-back chair as he pulled out a small velvet box; as he turned the box over in his hands and dropped his head in shame. Seth spent the remainder of the day locked in his office on the phone. Seth was transferring all of his possessions into Cassandra's name; he thought that maybe it was just him she didn't want, not their baby. Pain gripped Seth's heart as the thought of 'their baby' crossed his mind, he found himself choking on his words. As Seth worked in his office he could hear Cassandra in her room pacing back and forth. She had come inside several hours ago, but when she heard him on the pone, she second guessed opening the door; she felt she had enough bruises at the moment. Seth heard her footsteps pause at his door for a moment before moving into her room. Seth felt like dirt, but he knew it was his own fault she didn't want him. Seth knew one of the only ways for Cassandra to keep the baby was if she was a property owner, so that was why Seth was transferring all he owned to her name. Seth heard Cassandra walk past his door again and guessed that it was probably late afternoon and she was on her way to the kitchen for lunch; Seth debated on joining her but thought better of forcing her to spend anymore time with him than she had to. When his stomach announced that it was approximately dinner time Seth had finished transferring everything into Cassandra's name, all of his assets were now hers. Seth had set up his exodus, he had left himself with a few hundred dollars, just enough so that he could live out the rest of his time alone in the confines of his own personal hell. Seth had decided that he would wait for the final official paperwork to arrive before he left, until then he would stay as far away from Cassandra as possible.
