Chapter 26
The Sea Noose
“I like the lighthouse you painted.” I looked up from where I was lying on the floor in the living room.
“What?” Cian looked down at me from the couch. He pointed at the wall.
“The lighthouse, there? I like it.” I glanced at the wall and smiled.
“Oh. That. I painted that during your conference call. Something was missing and I figured out what.” he smiled and lied on his back, pillowing his arms underneath his head. I swung my legs in the air slowly as I went back to what I was doing.
The papers that had been strewn about the desk upstairs were now strewn about me as I lied on the floor on my stomach, in front of the fireplace. I had a pen in my hand and was reading through each paper, putting them in some type of order that I thought would make sense. I cocked my head to the side and bit my pen for a moment. I set it aside and grabbed a pencil and scribbled something on a fresh piece of paper in a journal Cian had found only god knows where. I looked back through the pieces of paper and got them organized in a few minuets, tapping the stack of papers against the floor to get them nice and even. I flipped through them for a moment, looking over the words scribbled on each paper, making a few marks and notes as I went.
“Cian?” a mumbled reply from the couch was all that I got.
“I think I have how I'm going to start this.” he lifted his head and looked at me over the table.
“That's good, Kassy.” I smiled brightly at him and bent my head back down to the task at hand. I repeatedly looked at the papers to make sure I was writing things write and following my notes as I re-wrote everything from the stack of papers onto the lined paper of the journal.
Cian stretched on the couch before sitting up and stretching against. He looked down at me as I scribbled away at the words. Vitas looked up at him and stood up, his tail wagging. He smiled.
“I'm going to go outside with Vitas for a bit, ok Kassy? I think I might play with him, you know, give him something to do.” I nodded and waved his off.
“Ok, have fun.” I continued writing furiously. He rolled his eyes and whistled, Vitas bounding over to him, jumping over me as he went. Cian took Vitas outside, still wearing only the pair of snug pajama bottoms, after making a quick stop into the spare bedroom to grab a few toys to play with. My legs continued to swing in the air slowly as I continued to write.
I opened the door slowly, my head peaking outside to try to see Cian and Vitas, my hands clutching the journal to my chest tightly, afraid that something might happen to it. I didn't see Cian or Vitas, so I cautiously stepped outside, my knuckles turning white from their death grip on my journal. I slowly walked out of the gate and through the golden grass on the worn stone path, my bare feet padding along silently.
I paused out side of the golden grass, looking out as far as I could see, I even stood on my tip toes, which really didn't do much since I was standing in sand. I still couldn't see either Cian or Vitas so I hesitantly took a few steps down the sandy hill, my hands aching from their tight grip on the journal. I looked around again, hoping to see one of them because I didn't want to take my journal, my paper journal, near the sea in the off chance it would get wet in any way. I bit my lip and continued down the small hill, reaching the mostly level shore of the beach. I walked slowly, straying closer in land, away from the crashing waves.
I took a deep breath and walked slowly down the shore, my eyes eying the waves suspiciously as if they were going to take the form of a person and steal my journal to get it wet. I stuck close to the hill of sand behind me, almost hugging it in an effort to keep my journal unharmed. I smiled in relief when I heard barking and a male voice laughing, knowing that it'd be Cian and Vitas. I laid eyes on them after I had walked around the small sandy corner. Vitas was chasing after a bright yellow ball and Cian was laughing as he watched Vitas bound over the small waves to grasp the ball with his teeth.
Vitas was too preoccupied with finding the ball again to notice that I had arrived to there spot, but Cian saw me and smiled at me, waving me over to where he stood, a few feet in front of the waves. I hesitated, my hands gripping the journal excruciatingly tighter as my feet started moving slowly to where he stood. He looked at me strangely before he saw that I was holding the journal tightly in my hands.
He smiled softly and took the ball from Vitas' mouth when he came back up to him. He threw the ball out as far as he could and Vitas bounded after it happily. He turned back to me and walked over to me. I smiled softly and waited for him to reach me.
“Hey.” my voice was softer than a whisper compared to the crashing waves. Cian smiled again and wrapped his arms around my waist loosely, putting himself between the journal and the waves. I smiled at him.
“Hey. What're you doing out here with your journal?” he kissed me gently and stroked the skin of my waist softly. I snuggled closer to him, sure with the fact that my journal was safe for now.
“I wanted to show you what I've gotten done.” I said in his ear so that he could hear me. He nodded and smiled at me, giving me another kiss.
“You could have waited until I got back, you know, instead of risking getting it wet.” I looked down to where the journal was between us and looked back up at him sheepishly. He smiled and kissed me again, my insides warming instantly from his affection. He nuzzled my cheek softly and my eyes fluttered closed, my head turning, so our cheeks rubbed against each other. I smiled at him softly, his eyes looking into mine lovingly.
“I didn't want to wait to show you.” my answer was soft, I wasn't sure if he had heard me. He kissed me once more, his lips lingering longer on mine than before. I smiled on the inside and kissed back, stepping closer to the warmth of his body. His arms moved around my waist, encircling me completely. I snuggled closer, a soft shiver running through my body. He chucked softly.
“Are you cold, Kassy?” I buried my face into his neck.
“S'not my fault I wanted to show you what I got done that I didn't put on anything else over my clothes.” his hands rubbed my back gently, warming up my exposed skin. I smiled in his neck and tried to press closer. I squeaked in surprise when I felt a wet nose press against my side, shivering a moment later when Vitas pulled away. Cian laughed, holding me tighter.
“I think we should head back and get you warmed up. I can read what you have written as we both sit in front of the fireplace, ok?” I nodded in to his neck and pulled away, one of my hands brave enough to let go of my journal and took Cian's hand, our fingers lacing together. Vitas followed along with us as we made our back to the house, trotting next to Cian, the bright yellow ball in his mouth.
I pressed against Cian's side, halfway hiding from the waves in a strange paranoia that I never had before. Cian smiled down at me, amused at my behavior. I ignored his amusement and glared at the waves suspiciously every now and then as we made our way down the sandy beach. When the golden grass was in sight I smiled brightly and let go of Cian's hand, running ahead, up the sandy hill.
I danced impatiently at the edge of the worn stone path as I waited for Cian to walk up the sandy hill, Vitas wagging his tail happily next to him. He laughed at me again, clearly amused with me. I rolled my eyes and huffed, turning and walking down the worn path to the gate and pushed my way through. I looked behind me as I walked into the house, seeing Cian reach the start of the golden grass. I shrugged and closed the door behind me, making my way into the living room to sit down in front of the fireplace to warm up, adding another log to it first.
I heard the door open and close, the sound of Cian and Vitas coming into the house, when I was already settled in my spot in front of the fireplace. I had my journal sitting open in my lap as I flipped through the pages to skin through my neat handwriting to make sure I didn't make mistakes. Vitas padded into the room and nuzzles my arm softly, settling down on his stomach next to me, resting his head on his paws. I smiled and scratched behind his ears, the fur on his back stand up on end from a shiver that had run down his back.
I smiled up at Cian as he walked into the room, stretching his arms over his head.
“Give me yer journal, Kassy.” I held up my journal to him and he took it from my outstretch hand. He took a seat on the couch and I watched him for a moment, turning away when he opened it up and started to read it. I rubbed Vitas' head once more and turned onto my stomach, resting my head on my folded arm and closed my eyes, enjoying the warmth coming from the fire. Vitas shifted closer, pressing against my side and huffing softly, the sound of the crackling fire and the occasonal page turning was all that was heard.
