Come out, comour wherever you are

Kevin and Jason entered the school for the first time that year, and for the first time as boyfriends. Jason was a little nervous over how his and Kevin’s relationship would be perceived by everyone at school, but Kevin wouldn’t be talked out of it. As far as he was concerned, Gary was dead so the danger was over and he could go back to his old last name. It also meant he could be open about his relationship with Jason and that’s all he wanted.

Jason wondered if his lover’s stubbornness had anything to do with his years of solitude in California before he’d met him. He and Kevin spent many long nights talking about it and, as far as Jason could surmise, Kevin would need plenty of reassurance that he wouldn’t be abandoned again. Until he felt comfortable with the situation, he would probably always feel insecure, though not in the bedroom. Jason smiled again as he remembered the way Kevin tortured him the whole week. He was going to have to call him the girl more often to make sure he got that kind of treatment on a regular basis.

Kevin smiled after they reached his homeroom, leaned up to Jason and kissed him on the lips. Jason heard a few gasps around him but ignored them. If Kevin wanted to do this, he would go along with it.

“Oh, that’s just gross!” shrieked a girl.

Jason looked up and locked eyes with none other than Tanya. He grinned impishly at Kevin before locking his lips onto him for a longer, sweeter kiss.

“I’m complaining to the principal!”

“Go ahead,” Kevin replied. “Jay’s sister’s a lawyer and we know our rights.”

“They don’t extend to the public hallways of the high school!” she sneered back.

“Yeah they do,” Jason cut in. “Unless the school wants to deal with the ACLU. And we’ve already been in touch with them.”

“You can’t be serious! This can’t be allowed!”

“Oh, but YOU can suck face with Will Jenner, and Tim Kole, and Frank Pierce all in one day in the middle of the cafeteria?” Cindy shot back as she walked over from a nearby classroom. “What kind of a double standard is that?”

“Shut up, freak!” Tanya rounded on her. “Well, I guess it’s obvious you turn men gay! Nice rep.”

“She didn’t ‘turn’ me,” Jason frowned. “I always was.”

“So you never really WERE dating her then?” Tanya smirked. “I KNEW IT!”

“You don’t know anything, bitch!” Cindy yelled back.

“Hey! Don’t call my girlfriend a bitch, you freak!” Mark Simmons walked up behind Tanya. He was captain of the basketball team and stood head and shoulders over Cindy, as if he might strike her next.

“Don’t call my girlfriend a freak, you scumbag!” Joey growled as he stepped right into Mark’s face. The basketball player was taller, but Joey was definitely more muscular. He glared at Mark like the other boy was nothing.

“YOU’RE going out with her?” Tanya laughed. “My, my. Maybe I did have you wrong, freak. You do get around, don’t you?”

“I suggest you muzzle your mutt,” Joey grunted not taking his eyes off Mark. “I would hate to have to do it for you, wuss.”

“She’s not a mutt,” Mark fumed. “And just WHO are you calling a wuss?”

“Bitch, mutt, same thing,” Joey replied in a deadly calm voice. “And I call anyone who lets a bitch like her tell him what to do a wuss. What’s the matter? Can’t think for yourself? Well, I guess you don’t need too many brain cells to run the basketball team these days.”

“Look who’s talking?” Mark retorted shooting Cindy an ice-cold glare.

“Actually, football requires strategic skill as much as it does muscle,” Randy said as he stationed himself against the wall next to Kevin and Jason. Marly followed suite and grasped her boyfriend’s arm loosely, throwing Tanya a challenging look. “With basketball, all you have to know is which end of the court to shoot for. Not too much strategy there.”

“Shut the hell up!” Mark called over to him then returned his attention back to Joey. “Watch yourselves. Your buddy’s not here to protect you anymore, pal. Remember that!”

“Trent didn’t need to protect us,” Joey replied. “But we could always count on him, like we can count on each other. Right, Rand?”

“Absolutely.”

“So, which is it, Cindy?” Tanya cackled.

“What?”

“Do you turn them gay, or do they just pretend to like you?”

“You’re just mad because we make up the small population of guys here that wouldn’t sleep with you,” Joey grinned. “We have a high set of standards, after all.”

Tanya threw him a scathing look before turning back to Cindy. “I’d say you TURN them gay. Really, what other choice would they have if they’d actually think about dating you? Any guy would probably rather be gay.”

“If I were you,” Kevin hissed quietly to Tanya, “I’d watch that mouth of mine. You have more enemies than friends here.”

“And YOU would know this how, girly boy?” she smirked.

“That’s IT!” Jason cried. “If you don’t get her out of here right now, I’ll show up at the basketball tryouts and take your spot from you!”

“You’re dreaming,” Mark chuckled. “You’ve never been on a team before.

“Not recently,” Jason grinned. “But at one of my last schools, I was a starter and the captain in my first year. The coach said I was literally swimming in natural talent. Want to see?”

“Whatever man.”

“Hey, that’s a great idea, Jay!” Steve Benson piped up. “Mind if John, Tommy and I join you?”

“I’d say that’s a definite go!” Jason smiled at him. “The way we play, there’s no way him and his friends can compete.”

“Hey, then maybe our team will actually GO to the championships this year,” Randy added.

“What’s going on here?” a teacher said as she came out of her classroom. She was an older woman with a dignified air about her. “This had better not be a fight in the middle of the hallways.”

“It’s not a fight,” Jason smiled at her. “Just a friendly disagreement, right Mark.”

“Yeah, real friendly.”

“Mrs. Baxter, these two boys were making out right here in front of us!” Tanya leapt over to the teacher. “I found it gross.”

“Did you now?” the teacher looked back at her.

“Yes, and I’m going to tell my father about it when I get home.”

“Well, you go and do that, dear,” Mrs. Baxter replied. “But you’d better learn to accept that everyone has rights and their relationship isn’t so uncommon anymore. I doubt, if push comes to shove, that your father will be able to do anything about it.”

“But it’s disgusting!” Tanya insisted, tossing back her bleached blonde mane. “And we shouldn’t be subjected to it!”

“Well, we shouldn’t be subjected to any make-out sessions in the hallway then,” the teacher shrugged. “What’s appropriate for one should be appropriate for all.”

“But it’s a sin!”

“In your religion, perhaps. But then so is premarital sex, as I understand it.”

The teacher gave Tanya one last appraising glance before she walked back into the classroom and shut the door.

“This isn’t done,” she vowed as she turned back to Kevin. “I won’t let you contaminate my school with your kind!”

“Our kind?” Kevin replied. “What about YOUR kind? You’re nothing but an egotistical, shallow bitch! It’s a wonder you and Trent came from the same parents!”

“My brother isn’t good enough to be in our family,” Tanya spat back. “None of the rest of us would associate with you!”

“No, YOU’RE not good enough to be related to HIM,” Joey hissed back. “And I’m so glad he was finally able to get the hell away from you, Tanya. You didn’t do anything to show you appreciated him. He always stuck up for you, protected you, helped you. You used him when you could and ignored him when you didn’t need anything from him. I don’t know how your parents put up with you.”

“They LOVE me,” she threw him a saccharine smile. “They tolerate him. They were shocked when he actually qualified for that scholarship. Otherwise, dad wouldn’t have wasted his money on college for my brother. He’s saving it for me, see? I’m the real brain in the family.”

“God help your family, then,” Cindy shot back. “I’ve seen shoe sizes larger than your SAT score.”

“Liar!” Tanya’s face turned red with rage. “Take that BACK!”

“I think you should get her out of here, Mark,” Randy grinned. “Before she gets any other teachers out here.”

“This isn’t over, Brennan,” Mark grunted as he pulled Tanya away.

“See you at tryouts!” Jason called after him.

“You were really that good?” Joey asked when Mark and Tanya were out of earshot.

“Yep.”

“I never knew,” Kevin huffed. “What else haven’t you told me?”

“Nothing, princess,” Jason whispered with a laugh. Kevin’s eyes narrowed at the endearment and Jason knew he’d be paying for it later. He couldn’t wait.
