Chapter 23: Contemplating an Escape Plan

While Nick was taking his shower, he started thinking about what Vincent had told him. Ya, more like threatened me with, he thought. If he thinks I am just going to lay down and submit to his desires, then his Oh Holiness had another thing coming.

He wouldn’t go down without a fight! He may be temporarily blinded, if what Sarah said was true, but that didn’t mean he would be Vincent's slave or like hell be his pet! I still have my pride and I intend to find a way out of this sorry mess I've found myself in. Even if it’s the last thing I do! I’ll be damned before I let Vincent continue to insult my intelligence and I will find my way back home to Jenna!

Nick did wonder, though, if Vincent was using some kind of a curse thing on him everytime he seducted him. He also couldn’t understand his own reactions to Vincent's touches. Shit, he thought, I am straight so why does that keep happening to me? He definitely has to be using some kind of Vampire mind control thing over me. Hell ya, that had to be it otherwise there was no way on this sweet green earth I would respond to him like that.

He finished washing his body and then washed his hair and got out of the shower. Sarah had laid clean clothes out for him on the bed so he got dressed and then sat down for a minute to continue thinking. What am I going to do? I have to get out of here. With Vincent gone, now would be the opportune time to escape, but how? At this point, I don’t have many options left open to me. If only I could see or get somebody to help me escape, then I would just leave and consequences be damned!

Hey wait a minute, why can’t I try to get one of the staff to aid me in escaping? Oh man, better yet, if I could only find a telephone then I could call the overseas operator and get a hold of Sean! Wait a minute, that’s a brilliant idea! I have to find a telephone! How stupid could I be, why didn’t I think of this before, it’s so easy!

There was a knock at the door and Sarah asked if he was ready to go down to dinner “I‘ll be right out!” Nick answered.

He found his way easily to the door and met Sarah and they started to head downstairs. While they walked, Nick tried to make small talk before getting to the important questions he wanted answered.

“I am sorry I’ve been so much trouble to you Sarah. I know that it must be an inconvenience with your busy schedule and everything.”

“Don’t be ridiculous Nick! It’s part of my job and besides I consider you my friend.”

“Why haven’t you ever left? Does he keep you a prisoner, like me, or did you choose to stay? I understand he has done a lot to help you over the years, but were you ever given the choice to leave if you wanted too?” Nick inquired.

“Yes, Nick, I did choose to stay. Unlike you, I was never forced to remain and Vincent has always left me with an open door option of staying or leaving.” she answered.

They reached the bottom of the staircase and continued on their way to the Dining Room. Upon entering it, Sarah guided Nick to the table and they sat down to eat. When they were finished eating, Nick and Sarah went to the Library to talk awhile before retiring for the evening.

“That was delicious! If I ever get the opportunity, I will have to remember to thank the cook.” Nick sighed.

Sarah smiled and replied, “I’ll have to introduce you to him sometime then.”

Nick could hear the fire crackling and the warmth of it gave him a safe comforting feeling. Well, now was as good a time as any, he thought.

“So, how long do you think Vincent will be gone?” Nick casually inquired of Sarah.

She looked at him strangely wondering what he was up too but answered, “It’s hard to say Nick, he told me it might be awhile but you never know.”

“What’s it like on the outside of here Sarah? What are the inhabitants like? Are we even near civilization? It’s been so long since I’ve had my freedom, that I’ve forgotten the feeling of it.” Nick asked.

Sarah wondered what Nick was up too, she knew there was a reasoning behind his questions and had to be careful how she answered him.

“It’s beautiful, Nick, so beautiful! I’ll have to ask Vincent’s permission to allow you to leave the castle but I am sure there shouldn’t be a problem. I can’t really answer your other questions because personally I believe you are up to something! I only hope you think it over very carefully before trying to pull something you will regret!”

Nick’s face must have expressed his shock because Sarah continued, “Look, Nick, I am saying this as your friend and because I truly have your best interest at heart. Whatever it is you are planning in that head of yours, just don’t do it! It won’t work and you may only end up getting hurt more. Please heed my advise and act rationale about this.”

To say Nick was flabbergasted was an exaggeration to say the least, but how in the hell did she know he was up to something? I can’t be that too easy to read, can I? Lord, I am a police officer how can this happen? It’s just not right!

“Sarah, I don’t know what your talking about! What gives you the idea that I am planning anything anyway? All I did was ask you some simple questions, so how does that constitute I am up to something? I thought you trusted me! How could you even think I would jeopardize our friendship like that?”

Nick was quickly running ideas through his mind. Oh shit, he thought, how am I going to manage to worm my way out of this one? I don’t believe it! Damn, damn, damn! Why do I always manage to get myself into these messes anyway?

“Ok, then, never mind I even asked you. Let’s just forget it and you can question Vincent about it whenever he gets back.” Nick said.

“That sounds like a good idea Nick.” Sarah replied.

“Well Nick, I am getting tired so why don’t we head upstairs?”

“Ok, sounds good to me, I am kind of tired too. It’s been a
long day.”

They both got up and prepared to leave the Library when Nick suddenly thought of a brilliant idea. At least he thought it was anyway. Tomorrow I am going to go exploring around this place and see if I can find myself a telephone. I am also going to wander around and see who else I can find to question about this place. With his plan set in motion, Nick arrived at his room and bid Sarah goodnight.

***********************

Upon waking the next morning, Nick went ahead with his plan.
He showered, got dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast. The only difference was that he took the cane with him and deliberately started walking in a haphazard way using his cane to strike whatever was within reach. His plan being, that he was hoping to find a table with a phone sitting on it.

I can’t wait, I am going to try calling Sean and the consequences be damned. There has to be one somewhere in this God forsaken place and I will find it. When I do, I will get a hold of Sean and he can put a trace on the line and get the authorities to help me. Trying to be as quiet as possible, he continued along his way.

Nick knew it wouldn’t be easy and that Vincent would have taken into consideration that he might have thought of this idea. Well, I will show him, I will outsmart the Big Old Bat once and for all. So far he was having no luck and knew Sarah would be starting to get suspicious when he didn’t show up for Breakfast so he quickly went off to meet her.

“Good morning Nick!” Sarah greeted him when he entered the room.

“Morning Sarah!” replied Nick.

“Did you sleep well Nick?”

“Yes, thank you.”

He sat down and started to enjoy his breakfast which consisted of ham steak, bacon, a cheese omelet, wheat toast and coffee along with a tall glass of orange juice. Once they finished eating, Sarah excused herself to go along and attend to whatever duties Vincent had left for her in his absence. Nick waited for about 15 minutes because if Sarah saw him leaving too soon she might get suspicious. When he thought it had been long enough,
he got up and headed out to explore the house. Hopefully, his luck had changed and he wouldn’t get caught.

It must have been a couple of hours later and still Nick had not found a phone. It figured, he fumed, why would Vincent make things easy for him? He was starting to get a little anxious, when he realized he didn‘t even know what part of the house he was in. Shit, he realized, here I am lost and blind, with no idea where the Hell I am going. There’s probably not even one phone in the whole damn forsaken place.

I better try to find my way back before they start looking for me, Nick thought. He started heading back in the direction he thought was the right way when he stumbled against something.
It must have been a small table because he knocked it right
over along with whatever was on top of it. It made such a loud clanging noise he jumped back. He thought he was imagining it,
no it couldn’t be, but it sounded familiar.

He reached down to lift up the table and scrambled around on the floor trying to find what had fallen off. He found a lamp with a cord and put it aside, then reached around some more until he found another cord. Using his fingers, he followed it's length until he felt a telephone on the other end. YES! he silently yelled. My patience and perseverance have finally paid off.

Trying to be as quiet and careful as possible, Nick lifted up
the receiver from where he was kneeling on the floor. He put it to his ear and heard a dial tone, excited he punched around searching for the 0 and finding it he dialed the operator and waited for an answer.

Thankfully, she answered in English and he was able to request
an overseas operator so he could make a long distance call to America. He couldn’t believe his luck, rescue was only minutes away!

He had to wait for what had to be the longest minutes of his life for the new operator to come on line and then he requested a person to person call to be made to Detective Sean Cummings at the Kensington Police Department in the USA. She told him it would take a few minutes and he anxiously waited to hear Sean speak.

“Detective Cummings” answered a familiar voice.

“SEAN!” Nick yelled into the phone.

“What the Hell! NICK?” Sean yelled back.

“SEAN! LOOK I DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME! YOU HAVE TO PUT A TRACE ON THIS CALL ASAP!” Nick insisted.

“ALREADY STARTING TOO MATE!” Sean assured.

Nick could hear Sean yelling in the background at someone before he came back to the phone.

“NICK! WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU? ARE YOU ALRIGHT? WHAT‘S HAPPENING? WE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE DEAD! WE HAVEN‘T STOPPED LOOKING FOR YOU, NOT ONCE, NOT SINCE THE NIGHT YOU DISAPPEARED! OH, MAN WE'VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH. ESPECIALLY JENNA, OH MY GOD SHE IS GOING TO BE SO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT YOUR STILL ALIVE!”

“SEAN, LOOK, I DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME BEFORE THEY MIGHT CATCH ME SO LISTEN CAREFULLY! I AM IN AN OLD CASTLE SOMEWHERE ON THE EUROPEAN COAST NEAR THE BASE OF A MOUNTAIN. I HAVEN’T BEEN ALLOWED OUT SO THAT’S ALL I HAVE TO GIVE YOU! I HAVE BEEN TEMPORARILY BLINDED BUT OTHER THAN THAT, I AM OK! NOW, HOW’S THAT TRACE COMING?”

Before Nick could continue Sean yelled out, “WHAT!!?? DID I JUST HEAR YOU RIGHT? THE BASTARD BLINDED YOU? I’LL KILL HIM! JUST WAIT UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON HIM!”

Nick smiled and said, “BRO, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW GOOD YOUR VOICE SOUNDS TO ME RIGHT NOW BUT I NEED YOU TO STAY FOCUSED WITH ME!”

Sean calmed down and said, “WE JUST ABOUT HAVE IT, DON’T WORRY! HOLD ON A SEC!”, Nick heard him talking with someone and then he was back, “WE'VE ALMOST GOT IT! WE'RE ZEROING IN ON THE AREA OF LOCATION BUT STILL HAVEN'T PINPOINTED YOUR EXACT WHEREABOUTS. WHAT DID YOU CALL IT YOU WERE BEING HELD IN AGAIN, A CASTLE?” Sean asked.

“YES! PLEASE HURRY SEAN! THE SITUATION IS GETTING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HERE! BE SURE TO BRING PLENTY OF BACKUP AND WEAPONS! I DON‘T WANT YOU TAKING ANY UNNECESSARY CHANCES!” exclaimed Nick.

There was a lot of static, Nick heard Sean swearing and then the line started breaking up and they were disconnected.

“SHIT!" cursed Nick.

“Well, well, well, what do we have here? It seems a little bird has escaped it’s nest.” drawled a somewhat familiar voice from behind Nick.

Turning his head towards the voice, Nick heard it say;

“Allow me to introduce myself, the name is Dominic, Dominic Ambrose.”

Well this definitely couldn’t be any good, thought Nick. I am in such deep shit! Crap!
