chapter 24

"I forgot your sweatshirt back at the dorms," Josie said when the got outside the cafeteria. "I can go get it now if you'd like."

"Its okay, Josie, I don't think either of us is going anywhere soon so what's the hurry? Nervous about tonight?"

"Ugh! More nervous than anyone knows and not for the reason everyone would expect." She said stopping in her tracks.

"Its because he'll be there isn't it? Its the same reason that your stalling to go up and smoke a cigarette." He observed.

"Please don't tell anyone about this conversation. Yes, its because of him."

"Why Brian? You always seemed to hate each other." He said.

"I didn't want to hate him and ecen when I did I don't think I really hated him. He just swooped in and got all involved and curious from day one and it snowballed. I had to stop associating with him to keep things from getting worse. And one day it all changed." She explained.

"So what went wrong?" He asked.

"Oh no, no no. I'm not telling you that. Let's change the subject shall we? What do you think about lisa?"

"Seriously? I think she is alright looking but her personality... I don't know, she seems very immature mentally."

"Alright, I definitely will not be repeating any of that back to her." Josie said with a laugh. She knew it would hurt to hear.

"Okay and I won't repeat any of what you've told me about you and Brian, even though you didn't tell me much at all."

"Good. You don't have to stay over here with me, you know, you can go up the hill with everyone else. Honestly, I could really use some time alone before class."

"Okay Josie. If you ever need anything, I'll do what I can."

"Don't worry about it. I'll figure things out eventually." Mike shrugged and walked away up the hill. Josie went down the basement stairs and lit a cigarette. It hurt to remember how she learned of this little hiding spot but she wouldn't be caught dead up on the hill now. As she smoked she dreaded the upcoming tests. If she passed she might be able to talk her mom into letting her leave, if she failed that wouldn't be an option but either way, she would like to try to talk to Brian and try apologizing again, try explaining how she had felt and why she told him to keep going.
