chapter 22
Josie went inside and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Jackie was out of the room. She'd had a long, hard day and all she really wanted was some quiet time. She took a bath and went into the wings living room to watch TV. After a while she got bored and went to the bus stop to smoke a cigarette and was happy to see Joe was there. Josie sat beside him and after a minute he lit a blunt. He took a hit and passed it to Josie wordlessly. She took a few hits before passing it back. After a few minutes Joe finally spoke.
"Whats the deal with you and Brian?"
"What do you mean 'whats the deal?' there is no deal. He hates me." she said.
"Is that so?" he asked handing her the blunt.
"Yeah 'thats so'." she said after inhaling.
"So then whats been going on between you two?" he asked.
"What do you mean 'whats been going on?' nothing is going on." sher said as she passed the blunt back.
"Nothing?" he asked incredulously.
"He told you?" she asked.
"Brian didn't have to tell me." he said evasively.
"Just don't tell anyone, okay? Theres nothing going on anymore anyways."
"No?"
"No." she said with finality and the conversation was over. They finished the blunt in silence and Josie was glad she was with Joe. With anyone else it would have been a tense silence... well, 'except maybe Brian' she thought and then scolded herself for thinking of him. She'd thought about him enough lately and after her big screw up this morning he seemed to be reverting back to the old asshole Brian. Josie sighed and decided it was all up to him. She wouldn't chase him because they'd had a few good days together. Actually, she wasn't going to chase him because she'd embarrassed herself this morning, and since he'd called her retarded. Okay, so he hadn't called her retarded but he'd implied it. And what did he mean 'she'd figure it out'? Figure what out? 'Men are fucking confusing' Josie thought. Josie Hugged Joe and thanks and went back to her room. She put her headphones on and laid down. Earlier in the day she'd started getting a stomach ache and it had only gotten worse as the day wore on. She was almost asleep when Jackie and Lisa came in, laughing about something and making so much noise that Josie would have rather had a marching band come in. She groaned and pulled her pillow over her head to try and drown out the sound.
"Whats wrong Jo." Jackie asked.
"Stomach hurts." she said from under her pillow.
"Blue balls?" Jackie questioned.
"WHAT?!" Josie and Lisa exclaimed at the same time.
"Its not just for guys." Jackie explained.
"Girls get blue balls to?" Lisa asked.
"Yeah. Once you're, uh, aroused to a certain extent, you NEED to get off."
"But I'm a virgin!" Josie said.
"I don't think it matters. Did you try, uh, 'taking care' of yourself?" Jackie asked.
"What?! No. I don't have blue balls and I'm not going to 'take care' of myself."
"Are you sure? If I was messin around with Brian I'd have blue balls every time I was away from him. Just lookin at him gets me wet."
"HOW DOES EVERYONE KNOW?! And Jack, please stop talking like a slut." Josie said.
"These things have a habit of getting around." Lisa said.
"Oh god, I just want to go home." Josie groaned.
"Not comfortable getting off here?" Jackie asked.
"JACKIE SHUT THE FUCK UP PLEASE! I will not get myself off, theres no need I don't have blue balls now can we just drop it."
"God Josie, if anyone was ever in denial its you. You can tell because you're being a major bitch." Jackie replied.
"OH I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" Josie said jumping out of bed and putting her shoes on. Today she was wearing yellow flannel pajamas with frogs on them but she didn't care; she needed to get away from Jackie before she killed her. She grabbed her cigarettes and stormed out of the room. Josie ended up on her bench next to Mike, who studied her for a moment before speaking.
"Rough day?" he guessed.
"How could you tell?" she asked.
"You're outside in new england in the middle of December without a coat. You walked by a group of people you usually talk to without even looking at them on your way over and you're practically breathing fire." he said.
"You're very perceptive."
"You're also wearing pajamas that are bright yellow with frogs."
Josie sighed. "I suppose the leopard print was better?"
"Infinitely." he said. He stood up and took of his sweatshirt and threw it into her lap. "Put it on, you're shivering." he said after seeing Josie's questioning look.
"Thanks. I wasn't really thinking about the temperate when I left the room. Back home I always had my own room so I'm not used to this nonexistent privacy thing. I thought I was going to kill Jackie; I just had to get out."
"I always thought you two got along good. Do you usually fight?" he asked.
"It wasn't really a fight. She was trying to get me to confront the problems she thinks I have."
"And you don't think you have problems?"
"Oh I have problems, just not the ones she thinks I have."
"What problems does she think you have?" he asked.
"I'm not telling you that."
"Problems with Brian?"
"HOW DOES EVERYONE KNOW?!" she asked, yet again.
"It gets around."
"I can't deal with this right now. I'm going to find a quiet place to kill myself." she said, standing up.
"Hold onto it." Mike said when he saw her move to take off his sweatshirt.
"Thanks" Josie walked back to the dorms and went back to her room hoping Jackie and Lisa would be gone but of course they were still there. She kicked off her shoes and sat down on her bed while Jackie and Lisa just stared at her.
"WHAT IS IT?!" she said after minute.
"Thats Mike's sweatshirt." Lisa said quietly.
"So?" Josie asked.
"You know I like him Josie, how could you?" Lisa said storming out of the room.
"What the fuck did I do now?" Jackie just shook her head at Josie and followed Lisa out.
