Healing & Discovery

Chapter 20: Healing & Discovery

Nick was slowly struggling back to consciousness from a deep dark abyss. He felt nauseous and his body was throbbing with intense pain. Oh, hell, my head feels like it is going to explode into a million pieces at any minute.

God, he thought, What the hell happened? I think I was in a fight or something, but can’t seem to remember with who or what it was about? I know one thing, I definitely came out on the losing end of it. He had the feeling someone was holding his hand and thought of how comforting and safe it made him feel. He tried opening his eyes but they felt weighted down and rubbery. Finally, after much effort on his part, he was able to lift his eyelids open only to find complete darkness.

“Why is it so dark? Who the hell turned out all the lights?” he mumbled out loud.

“Nick, it’s Sarah, do you remember anything about what happened?” a woman’s voice gently asked him.

Nick thought he recognized the voice but was unable to put a face with it.

He started to panic and cried out, “No!...What’s wrong with me?.. What happened?...I can’t seem to remember anything! Who are you?.. What’s wrong with my eyes?.. Why can’t I see you!?.. Please!.. Tell Me!.. Help me!”

He could hear whispers coming from somewhere above him, talking, and he got upset because it seemed they weren’t listening to him.

“What happened to me? Who are you? Please answer me!” Nick again pleaded to whoever was there, and he started struggling to sit up but collapsed from the pain.

“Nick, you need to calm down, you will be alright! Do not try to get up or you will only end up hurting yourself more.” spoke Sarah, as she pulled the blankets up around his body and rearranged the pillows beneath his head.

After he seemed to relax, Sarah offered Nick a glass of water in which she had put some medication to help him sleep so that he could heal. He gratefully sipped it then lay back down and closed his eyes to rest.

When he had fallen asleep, Vincent and Sarah left the room to go into the hallway to talk.

“Vincent, how could you have done this to him? What were you thinking? I know we had no right discussing your past. It’s my fault as much as Nick’s, but are you going to beat me within an inch of my life too? I can’t believe you did that too him! I know how private you are about your personal history but don’t you think he had the right to know? Nick asked that I tell him. I only told him so that he could try to understand the reasons for your actions and help him try to deal with this situation that you have forced him into.” Sarah scolded Vincent.

She stood there with a look of cold fury on her usually relaxed and friendly face. Oh, how I want to slap his face! Damn him! I thought having Nick in his life would be a good thing and help him learn to be more caring. Apparently,I was wrong and poor Nick has paid the ultimate price.

“If you want to slap me, I don‘t blame you and I certainly won’t punish you for it.” said Vincent.

Unable to stop herself, Sarah swung her fist with all the force she could muster and struck Vincent right in the face. The blow didn’t even nudge him or leave a bruise but to Sarah it was a way of releasing her frustration.

“Why Vincent, Why, Why did you do this to him?” she begged for an answer.

“I wish I could answer you, Sarah, but I can’t tell you why. I can’t even tell myself why. I just know that I lost all reasoning. All the years of pent up anger, the years of self-imposed exile, my parents and Elizabeth’s deaths. Everything just came rushing back at me, and I couldn’t control myself. I have no excuse for what I did to Nicholas. I hate myself for it.” Vincent was leaning against the wall while talking to Sarah.

He looked at her and continued, “There is just something about him that seems to bring the worse out of me. I don‘t know what it is, maybe it’s his stubbornness or his fortitude. I just can’t explain it. I know I can’t stand to be away from him for too long, and yet when we are together I just want to hurt and embarrass him. I can tell you this much, that from the first moment I saw him in Dark Enchantment and stole him away from everything he knew and loved, it was as if a part of me came alive. Oh, Sarah, I know I led Nicholas and his friends to believe that when I tired of him I would kill him but I can’t. I also know that I don’t want to share him with anyone. I will kill anyone who touches him. He belongs to me and me alone. I will never tire of his body. I can’t get enough of his sweet blood and have to hold myself back from turning him completely. The scent of him drives me insane with uncontrolled desire. Sarah, I can never let him go.”

“Oh, Vincent!” Sarah didn’t know what to say but let him go on.

“Listen to me Sarah and listen carefully, I have just discovered something important and you are the only one I trust enough to confide in. Nicholas belongs to me and I have reason to think that he is my long awaited soul mate. I have suspected this from the beginning but the recent turn of events finally convinced me. It explains the reason for my behavior to Nicholas. I just can’t accept the bond yet. There is too much going on with the others to take the chance of them finding out. He would be in too much danger. I will continue to behave this way towards Nicholas until the bonding is completed. I cannot stop it. My inner demons will rage war and Nicholas will take the brunt of it. I just hope he will find it in his heart to forgive me when the time comes.” Vincent finished.

Sarah was ecstatic and knew that Vincent would eventually make Nick happy. She now knew the reasons for his actions, and even though she was unhappy with what he had done to Nick, she knew that it would all turn out for the best.

“Will he be alright Sarah? I didn’t mean to hurt him. There is no excuse for what I did but I promise it will not happen again. At least now, that I understand what is happening, I can deal with it and learn to control my emotions and keep them in check.” he explained.

“Please tell me Sarah, I need to know, will his eyesight and memory return.” pleaded Vincent.

Sarah looked Vincent directly in the eyes and said, “Yes, Nicholas will regain his memory back soon but his eyesight will take longer. When his head hit the desk, the trauma affected the visual portion of his brain. It is bruised and swollen so needs time to heal. I am absolutely positive that he will recover his sight but it may take a few months. We will have to be patient with him and help him to cope until he regains it back.”

Vincent smiled at her and then went over to hug her, “Thank you, Sarah! I don’t know what I would have done all these years without you. Nobody else would have put up with me except you.”

“What are friends for? Now, let’s go and see how Nicholas is, we have been away from him for too long.” Sarah said leading Vincent back to the room.

They entered the bedroom and walked over to the bed. Nicholas was still sleeping. Vincent pulled up another chair by the bed so that the two of them could be by Nick’s side. By the time morning came, Nick was starting to stir again, so Sarah again gently started to speak to him so he would hear her voice.

“Good morning, Nick. It’s Sarah. Are you feeling better this morning? Would you like something to eat or drink?” she asked as he woke up.

“I am thirsty could I have something to drink please.” Nick moaned and winced as he tried to sit up in the bed. “I remember what happened now. Is Vincent here too?” he asked.

“Yes, Nicholas, I am right here next to you. How are you feeling, Pet?” Vincent answered.

Looking over in the direction of his voice, Nick responded, “YOU FREAKING ASSHOLE! I AM NOT YOUR PET! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME? I’LL KILL YOU FOR THIS YOU STUPID OVERGROWN UGLY BAT! YOU JUST WAIT! WHAT GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DO THIS TOO ME! I WILL MAKE YOU PAY! YOU WON’T GET AWAY WITH THIS!”

Sarah looked at Vincent and saw him smiling. At least they knew Nick was on the road to recovery. By hearing Nick use the special nickname reserved just for Vincent, she knew it was only a matter of time before things would settle back to normal. At least as normal as they could be. Vincent would have his hands full dealing with Nick and it was going to be interesting to watch what happened next. Nick wasn’t going to make it easy for Vincent that much was certain. I certainly don’t envy him even though he deserves it for what he did to Nick. It was going to be a long and rocky road to recovery at least for Vincent.
