chapter 21
short chapter I know but I'm trying to keep up with the demand
Josie left Mr. Ks office and went to the bus stop for a cigarette. She could have easily walked by the dorms and to the main smoking section but then she’d risk seeing Brian. She couldn’t do it; couldn’t see him, not after today. This morning and then the way he ignored her at lunch was horrible and she didn’t need to look at him and be reminded of it. No, she thought, I don’t need him to remind me of it because its all I’ve thought about all day. The bus pulled up and all the non-residential students piled on as Josie took a last drag of her cigarette. She threw her butt and walked up to the dorms.
Dinner went as usual; Chris, Jay, and Joe were off playing video games but Lisa, Jackie, Nick and Brian were there at the usual time. They sat in their normal seats and made the normal small talk while eating. As usual Nick left earlier than everyone else to go to the rec and soon after everyone went outside to smoke. When Lisa and Jackie were done they took off to the dorms and Josie was left on one bench with Brian on the other. Brian hadn’t even looked at Josie since this morning and she didn’t know what to say or do to make things go back to the way they were. Those few days had been Josie’s best days at job corps and she missed it. A few times she thought about saying something but once she opened her mouth to speak she lost her nerve. She wasn’t even sure what she should say. What do you say to someone that thinks badly of you? She tried once more with the same result when Mike joined her on the bench; obviously he’d learned his lesson the first night about sitting on Brian’s bench without permission. He had head phones on so Josie tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
“Hey asshole. Whatcha listening to?” she asked.
“Josie, are you trying to become enemies with all the men here?” Brian suddenly asked. Josie ignored him since it was all he‘d done to her all day.
“Deftones, bitch.” Mike responded.
“White Pony right? Everyone has it because it has a couple popular songs on it. I mean, its not bad but Adrenaline is my favorite.” Mike pulled his disc man out of his pocket and opened it. When it stopped spinning Josie saw that it was adrenaline. “I seem to have underestimated you.”
“So it seems.” Mike said.
“We got off on a bad foot, not that it was my fault, I mean, I tried being nice from day one-”
“Let me get this straight, Josie. You’re calling truce with him because he listens to the Deftones even though every time you’ve talked one or both of you gets mad. Whereas me and you, I never purposely did anything to get on your bad side and we’ve been at it for weeks now and yet there’s no truce for me. Why? Is it because I prefer around the fur?” Brian said from his bench. Josie couldn’t help but notice he seemed upset. No, not upset, he was furious. He had a murderous glint in his eyes and Mr. K’s words ran through Josie’s head; when Brian is mad, run for the hills. Mike threw his barely smoked cigarette and did exactly that while Josie tried to think of something to say in response. After a minute Josie decided to stop thinking since she hadn’t come up with anything good so far and said what was on her mind.
“You never purposely did anything? You’ve ignored me all day and the second I try talking to someone else you start an argument with me.”
“And you don’t know why?”
“Because you’re an asshole?”
“Christ Josie. Are you retarded?”
“What?”
“Someday you’ll figure it out and you’ll do your little head slap and call yourself a retard.” he said as he stood and walked away.
