chapter 20
Josie and Max finished lunch in a comfortable silence and after Max told her to go smoke a cigarette for an hour. Since it was lunch for the academics building she was able to spend the whole hour on the hill without having to worry about being there too long. Jackie, Lisa and Chris had trade this week so they had the next lunch but Josie was able to talk to Jay and Joe for a while. After, she went back to her comfortable chair in the guard shack to listen to more of Max’s stories. After a while she became bored and began cleaning the top of the desk and then moved to the drawers while she listened to Max go on about his teenage years. At 2 Mr. K showed up and Josie was glad she’d actually been doing something to make herself look busy. Of course at that moment she found something in the desk and couldn’t contain her excitement.
“A BLACKLIGHT?!” she exclaimed switching the portable light on and off.
“Hey, Joes, put that back its not a toy.” Max said, trying to sound threatening.
“I know its not a toy.” Josie replied matter-of-factly. “Light bulbs get hot and can burn. Hardly something anyone would want to play with.” Mr. K laughed softly while Max grabbed it out of her hands.
“I meant its not for students to touch.”
“I know what you meant Mr. Maxwell.” Josie said. “And I know what its for.”
“You do?!” Mr. K and Max asked at the same time.
“Yeah its for that “invisible” dust that’s in the fire alarms so you can find out who pulls the fire alarm.” Josie said.
“Max, I need to borrow Miss Reynolds for the rest of the day.” Mr. K said.
“She’s all yours.” Max said and Josie left with Mr. K.
“You can’t tell anyone what that black light is for.”
“I thought it was common knowledge.”
“Maybe, maybe not. But seriously, don’t mention it.”
“I won’t. Its not like I enjoy being woken up at 3 am to stand in the cold in my pajamas while the advisor's yell at us.”
“Swear.” he said, stopping to wait while she did.
“I swear to you, Mr. K, I will not tell anyone about the black light and or its uses.” Josie said with her hand over her heart.
“That’s better.” Mr. K said, continuing their walk.
“So what do you need me for anyways?”
“Filing.” he said, holding the office door open for her. “I also need my desk cleaned and organized.”
“You can’t clean your own desk?”
“I’m not the best with cleaning and organization.” he said unlocking his office and holding the door for her again.
“A man that admits his faults?”
“I’ll also admit to being wrong, when I am wrong.” he said.
“Shocking.”
“It doesn’t happen too often.”
“So where are the files?”
“There’s a few on the desk.”
“A FEW?!” Josie exclaimed when she saw the stack.
“I don’t have much time for filing.”
“You walk around for hours a day; you couldn’t do it then?”
“I could, but then you wouldn’t have anything to do right now.” Josie grumbled and started filing while Mr. K started rifling through the drawers of his desk.
“What are you doing?” Josie asked from the filing cabinet on the other side of the room.
“Making a proper mess for you to clean up.” he joked while shifting the contents of his drawers around. “I’m looking for everything I’ve confiscated from other students so you can’t get your hands on it.”
“You think I’d take it?”
“I’m afraid of you playing with it like you were the black light.”
Josie spent a half hour filing before getting to the desk. Mr. K had vacated the office a few minutes before and Josie breathed a sigh of relief. The desk wasn’t too bad so Josie spent the last 15 minutes of the day spinning herself around in Mr. Ks chair. She’d started out slow but built up speed and when the chair came to a sudden halt the room kept spinning. Josie stood and then fell back into the chair and Mr. K laughed.
“Can I go now?” Josie asked after the dizziness passed and she saw it was 3:23.
“In seven more minutes. Why don’t you tell me about yourself?”
“What do you want to know?”
“Were you a trouble maker at school?” he asked, perching himself on the edge of his desk.
“Um, I don’t know. Not really, I think. I mean, I didn’t really pay attention and in some classes I was disruptive but I didn’t start fights or anything.”
“Why are you here?”
“I dropped out and the plan was to go to night school and get my GED but then my mom saw a job corps commercial.”
“Did you want to come?”
“Not even a little bit.”
“What was your first impression?”
“Well, it seemed okay until the bell rang and the smoking section filled up.” Mr. K laughed.
“How do you like it now?”
“I think I would like it more if it wasn’t for the men.”
“Brian?”
“Its not just Brian. I can’t stand Nick and for a little while even Jerome was becoming a problem. And its not just me either. Other girls are having similar problems with out of control men who just won’t get the hint. Jackie even told me once a staff member hit on her.”
“Who?” Mr. K asked, suddenly very interested.
“I don’t remember. It was only my second or third day and I didn’t know who was who back then.”
“If she mentions it again, find out who it was.” he said. “You haven’t had anymore trouble with Jerome, have you?”
“Not since he called me a slut.”
“Good. He’d have to be an idiot to try talking to you again.”
“He talked to me on Monday night.”
“What did he say?”
“Said he had a vacation thanks to Brian and he apologized.”
“He called it a vacation?”
“Yeah. Why was he suspended so long anyways?”
“He wasn’t suspended. He was on a medical leave.”
“What?”
“I told you earlier; when Brian is mad, run for the hills. You can go now.”
