Chapter 2

Joel Hamilton excused himself to take a phone call and suggested Chester and Elsie Harkness look over the contract until he finished.

Contract between
Joel Hamilton, Tutor
and
____________, Student

1. Student shall pay $750 in advance for one semester's lessons. This fee is nonrefundable.

2. All lessons are conducted at the studio and last either one or two hours.

3. Student will be in his/her place, instrument in hand, ready to begin the lesson at the assigned time.

4. Student will be given exercises each week to practice at home. Student is responsible for practicing at least one half hour every day. No progress can be expected if student fails to do his/her home exercises.

5. Student's parents should encourage the student. However, they should not initiate any lessons themselves without consulting the Tutor. Student should not be pushed to attempt exercises for which he/she is not ready.

6. At the completion of a successful semester, Student will participate in a recital with his/her fellow students for all their parents.

"I'm sorry for that interruption. Eugene broke a tooth playing football and his mom called to reschedule his appointment. These things happen. Kids will be kids. Now where were we?"

"We were about to explain, Mr. Hamilton,..."

"Please, call me Joel."

Mrs. Harkness continued, "Uh, OK, Joel. We've been searching for someone to work with our little Jennie. We feel she has a lot of latent talent, but so far no one has been able to get it out of her."

"I see. And who have you tried?"

"Well, Mr. Harkness and myself tried of course, even when she was still in Kindergarten. Then our neighbor Mr. Hines thought he could help. But little Jennie was resistant to all our attempts. She started second grade last month and we're afraid if she doesn't begin to learn this soon, it will be much more difficult for her later on. You see, I didn't begin myself until I was in Junior High. I had an excellent teacher but it was still so difficult at first. Of course, now I love it; it gives me such satisfaction in life. How I wish my parents had started me sooner."

"So, Jennie's only so-called teachers so far have been amateurs. She's never had a professional tutor, a CST. Well, thank goodness you've come to me now. I don't expect too much harm has been done."

Chester asked, "Can you explain the difference between a CST and a CSTh?"

"Certainly, a lot of people are confused by that. I'm a CST, a Child Sex Tutor, or Child Sex Trainer, the acronym can be read either way. My job will be to help Jennie discover the joys of sex. The curriculum I've established is fun, but carefully planned. I know you'll be happy with the results."

"Oh, yes. We've heard many good reports from the parents of some of your students. You come highly recommended."

"Thank you. I'm very proud of my reputation. But to get back to your husband's question. I've taken introductory courses to childhood sexual dysfunction, and I can spot the symptoms of most of the common syndromes. If I find that Jennie has some psychological problem that needs addressing, I will then recommend treatment with a CSTh, a Child Sex Therapist. There are some excellent ones in our area. They have the medical training to deal with deep-seated problems, for instance where a child was raped, or witnessed a rape, or had some other traumatic sexual experience. I've found, however, that in most cases, a child's resistance, as you described it, is not clinical in nature. Jennie simply may not understand what is expected of her. She may have heard half-truths from her playmates. She may just be shy or inexperienced. Whatever it is that's holding her back, I'm sure together we can probably get over that hurdle fairly easily. I'll be able to tell in the first two or three lessons whether a therapist's expertise is called for."

Chester, the practical one, spoke up. "Well, I hope so, Joel. I'd hate to have to cough up the fees those therapists charge. Even with my health insurance, the co-pays can be pretty heavy. Your rates seem fairly reasonable in comparison."

"If you'd like to sign the contract then on your daughter's behalf, we can arrange a time for her weekly lessons. I'm required to tell you, that by state law, you have three days to cancel the contract if you change your mind for any reason."

"No, Joel, we'll be happy to sign," Mrs. Harkness said, speaking for both. "You've given us so much hope."
