Chapter 2
Mark stretched like a lazy housecat and rolled over to see what time it was. Then he yawned and scrubbed his hands over his face before falling back on his and Jason’s full sized bed and looking up at the ceiling in disbelief. It was only 6 am. For the bazillionth time in his life, Mark cursed his inability to sleep late. He’d ended up working the closing shift the night before and hadn’t gotten home until well past midnight. After that he’d spent some quality time with his lover, giving Jason what he needed to reassure him that Mark belonged to him and him alone, just like he had been for the past two weeks. It seemed to be working, too, because the fight they’d had before was like a distant memory and Jason had gone back to his usual cheerful and loving self again.
A smile spread across his lips as memories of just how loving Jason had been the night before washed over him. Jason was really good in bed and one of those lovers who gave as well as he got. There simply wasn’t a top or bottom in their relationship. They did whatever seemed right when the mood hit. He’d always loved that about his boyfriend. Add to that, Jason was a total fox. He had gorgeous, rich, dark hair that glowed with health. It was way better than Mark’s scraggly, fine, red hair and he’d always wished his was even half as thick.
Mark constantly complained because Jason insisted on taming his unruly curls with styling products until it was smoothed back, every hair in its proper place. Jason claimed that it would be unprofessional of him to go to client meetings with his hair all over the place. Mark disagreed. He thought that Jason would probably attract more clients if they could see how sexy his dark hair looked hanging carelessly in front of Jason’s multicolored, hazel eyes.
That was another feature that Mark loved about his boyfriend. Sure, Jason was built and very tall. He was a gay man’s wet dream, but those eyes, with their myriad flakes of gold, green, and brown outlined in dark grey, were so intense and full of life that they’d make anyone want to fall down on their knees and worship at his big lover’s feet. The handsome face and good body made some of the more annoying things easier to handle.
The one thing Mark would change about Jason was his insecurities. At times the man’s possessiveness was stifling, as was his need to control Mark’s life to such a degree. He’d always been that way. In the beginning, it had made Mark feel very loved and treasured and he was willing to admit that, at first, he’d probably encouraged that characteristic in his lover to some degree because of that fact. Mark was used to it by now and it wasn’t like Jason was violent or had ever threatened to hit him. Still, it got old after a while and something really needed to be done about it. Most of the time Mark was able to shrug it off as the small price he had to pay to have such a doting and affectionate lover. Especially when things were going as well as they had the past couple of weeks. . .
“My Cherry Top seems awfully happy about something this morning,” Jason observed cheerfully as he walked into the room, buttoning his shirt up the front as he made his way over to the bed to drop a wet kiss on Mark’s upturned lips.
“You know I hate it when you call me that,” Mark replied with a fake pout as he happily took in the way that Jason’s wavy, dark brown hair lay mussed atop his head.
“What else would I call you with that cute, little mop of red hair?” Jason asked with a grin as he bumped his nose against Mark’s in a playful gesture before starting to back away. “That still doesn’t explain the big smile on your face.”
“Well, maybe that’s because my boyfriend took such good care of me last night,” Mark purred as he stretched his arms up to pull Jason back down again. Jason gave in with a deep chuckle and buried his face against Mark’s neck as he blew a raspberry against the sensitive pulse point he found there. It tickled and Mark couldn’t stop the giggle that escaped his throat as he squirmed and tried to pull away. “Stop it!” he cried out, his words broken by the laughter and squeals that he couldn’t hold back.
Jason let out a delighted laugh of his own and pulled away from Mark’s neck to look down at him with shining eyes and flushed cheeks. Then, just when Mark thought he was safe, his boyfriend let out a loud growl and grabbed Mark by the ribs with his big hands to tickle him mercilessly. “Say uncle!” Jason called out as he stepped up his attack, dragging a kicking and squirming Mark back into range to get better aim at his ticklish target.
“Uncle! Uncle!” Mark screeched as he smacked at the hands accosting him, tears of laughter fogging his vision. “Ahh! You’re such a meany!”
Immediately, Jason let out a gasp and stood up on his knees to clutch a hand to his heart as if mortally wounded. “How could you call me such a thing,” he asked with fake hurt as he fought back a grin and dodged a playful smack from Mark.
“Meany, meany, meany!” Mark chided playfully as he reached up to return the favor and jab a teasing finger into Jason’s side. Jason grabbed it and drew it up to his mouth. Then he wiggled his eyebrows playfully before dropping a debonair kiss on Mark’s knuckles and backing away.
“How did you get so damn cute?” Jason asked with a bright, loving smile as he stood up and began tucking his shirt into his pants.
“It’s takes a lot of practice,” Mark shot back with a playful grin, letting his eyes trace a path down to the growing erection in Jason’s dress slacks. “When will you be back?” he asked, a more serious mood settling over him as he remembered that Jason had an 8 o’clock meeting with an IT company. It was a really big deal to Jason and would nearly double his income if he managed to secure the account.
“I don’t know,” Jason replied as he walked over to the closet they shared and reached in to retrieve his favorite belt. It was the one that Mark had given him for Christmas last year. It’d taken Mark over a month to save up the money for it and Jason only wore it for big occasions, claiming that it was special and that he didn’t want to ruin it by using it every day. “I’ll try to make it back before you leave for work, but I can’t make any promises on this one. If I’m not, then be sure to take your lunch. Depending on how long the day runs, I might not be able to stop by to drop something off to you.”
“Yes, dad,” Mark grumbled in an annoyed tone.
“Don’t even joke about that,” Jason snapped, his relaxed mood quickly falling away as the muscles in his shoulders tensed. “I’ve told you before that I don’t like to be compared to that son-of-a-bitch. Anybody who’d cut his own son off and leave him high and dry at 18 doesn’t deserve to be called a dad. And the same goes for your mom. I hope they both rot in Hell.”
“That’s kind of harsh don’t you think?” Mark observed with a frown. “I mean, it’s not like they had any clue that I was gay and the way they found out wasn’t ideal by anyone’s standards. If I’d eased them into it, they might’ve taken it a little better. They’ll come around eventually.”
At those words, Jason fell quiet, a stormy look filling his hazel eyes. He didn’t comment further, though. He simply studied Mark for a moment, as if trying to gauge whether or not Mark really believed that. Then he shrugged and sat down on the bed to pull his best pair of dress shoes from underneath and began slipping them on. “If I don’t see you before you leave for work then I’ll see you when you get home,” he murmured as he tied his shoe laces. Once they were done, he once again turned his full attention to Mark and gave him a gentle smile and a warm, sweet kiss on the lips. “I love you, babe. Be good while I’m gone.”
“Love you too,” Mark whispered back, leaning in to steal one last kiss when Jason moved to stand. Once his lover had left the room, Mark laid back on the bed again with a disappointed sigh. He hadn’t lied. He really did love Jason, and for the most part was happy with him, but when he made comments like that it cut Mark to the core. That ‘Be good while I’m gone’ was nothing more than Jason’s way of saying ‘Please don’t cheat on me or talk to other guys’. It was a little depressing that, no matter how hard Mark tried to convince Jason that he loved him, his boyfriend continued to suspect him.
They’d been together for almost five years and it was always the same thing. As much as he loved Jason, Mark was beginning to think that Jason had issues that simply couldn’t be fixed by love alone. Heaven knew that Mark had never given Jason any reason to doubt him. While it was true that Jason had seen a guy kiss Mark once, that had been the other guy’s fault and Mark had been completely blindsided when it’d happened. Either way, Jason had been cheated on by his ex before Jason and Mark had even met, and now Mark was the one paying for the other guy’s infidelity. He wasn’t sure how much more of his boyfriend’s insecurities he could handle. Love alone wasn’t enough if two people couldn’t trust one another.
It was sad, but Mark had been thinking for some time that he might have to end things soon. He didn’t want to, and the past two weeks had once again given him hope, but if things didn’t improve then he knew he didn’t have a choice. Jason’s moodiness and possessiveness was beginning to control every aspect of their relationship and that wasn’t good enough for Mark. He knew that he deserved better and the first thing he planned to do was schedule a couple of days off to match Jason’s schedule and sit down with his lover and have a long, serious talk about his issues. When he did, Mark would insist that Jason seek professional help to overcome them. Maybe then they could move forward. If Jason refused, Mark knew he’d have no choice but to move on.
