Ch 1
Aled swam around in the fields trying to avoid the leader of the village in an attempt to get out of his newest lesson.
Aled was a boy of 19 years of age and would soon take over being the Shanari, the healer/leader, of the village. He does not think that he is the person for the job. He has never been good with healing and he would rather have someone telling him what to do than telling others what to do. He is smaller than most of the people in his village and even his younger brother of 5 years is larger than him. Not only that his skin is so much paler than all the other villagers, theirs being a deep navy and his being what his best friend, Delwyn, would call "sky blue".
Delwyn is the only one of the villagers that is an actually outsider. He says he has been to the surface world. He's different, somewhat like Aled. He's not the deep blue of this villages tribe or the pale blue that seems to belong only to Aled, he has the most amazing shade of shimmery blue-green color of skin that Aled has ever seen; then again it is the only other color of skin he has ever seen. He also has different markings that set him apart from Aled's people.
All the Waterpeople tribes have different markings and colors that set their tribes apart from the others. Aled's People are dark blue with deeper blue, almost black, swirling markings. That also sets Aled as different. His markings aren't like his sire's or brothers'. His matches the Shanari of his village, who also happened to give birth to him.
He does not want to rule his people. He would rather roam the ocean and meet all the other Water tribes that Delwyn tells such wonderful stories of whenever he comes back from his wanderings. But Aled being who he is can Never leave the village. It is his duty to stay and lead his people.
He has never felt that he has belonged. He looks so different from the people, and he feels as if there is more out there for him than just sitting at the bottom of the ocean delivering babies, when the other older carriers know more about it than he will ever know. The way the Shanari talks to him though sounds as though his only job for the next few decades will be carrying and having babies with whoever the Shanari feels should be his next consort. He won't even be able to pick his own consorts. Delwyn says it's not like that with most of the surface tribes. Their leaders get to pick whoever they want to mate with.
He would like to go live up there for awhile. Just to see if Delwyn was lying or not. But no one of the village would EVER allow it. So here he was stuck in this small village at the bottom of the ocean and he will never be able to experience the fun stuff that Delwyn says that he does every time he leaves. He wishes that he could be free for at least for a little while in his life. A couple of months would do, but it would never happen.
So he was stuck here, looking for a hiding spot that would be comfortable enough to stay there for a few hours.
