(Adam’s POV)
History class was as boring as ever, I could barely keep my eyes open. And as I looked around the classroom I realized that everyone shared my boredom. The jocks kept making paper airplanes and throwing them at the nerds. It was childish but it was a way like any other to pass the time. Nobody was paying attention to the old coot. I looked at the far end of the classroom and saw the kid I bumped into immersed in a book that was definitely not the history book. That reminded me of our weird meeting today. He was really amusing, spacing out all the time, the way he looked at me liked I came out of a book or something. His examination was almost clinical, curious, quite different from the annoyingly adoring looks I get from the girls and even some of the guys. I despise people like that, I’m not vain but I know that I am good looking, maybe more if I believe what the girls behind me are whispering loud enough for me to hear and pretending they are not flirting so desperately with me.
Since I was young, I’ve been used to heads turning and admiring gazes whenever I pass by people, so it was quite a shock when the kid said he never saw me before even though we’ve been sharing a couple of classes for two months. Not that I noticed him or anything, he made me think of a quite mouse when I saw him today. He was walking head down, his hair falling in his facing not looking at anything nor anyone. Usually nerds have some sort of radar that spots jocks so they get out of the way unless they want to get thrown by the big guys into the lockers, so I expected the kid to avoid me, or make a turn at the last minute or something. But he just walked straight into me, and then when he looked at me I expected him to stutter an apology and to run away, instead he just kept looking at me like I came out of a painting, his gaze was so curious that I didn’t know whether to feel flattered or amused. All the time he didn’t realize that I was still holding his arms so he doesn’t fall back as he was intent on studying me that I settled on amused.
He said his name was something angelic, what was it again? Oh yes, Gabriel, nice name! He seemed an okay kid too, a bit weird but he’s alright I guess. Maybe we can hang out sometime. I’ve been in this school for two months and I don’t really like it . It is like my old school, the girls are always gossiping and fawning over the football team. And the guys are stupid snobs, even though I became pretty easily the captain of the team, I don’t really like to hang out with the team unless necessary. Especially that Chris Cannon guy, he was a candidate for captain too, and was about to have it if I didn’t come along. He didn’t take it quite well, he doesn’t seem like a bad guy but he looks like someone who has been handed everything he wanted on a silver platter so far. Not that I care, I don’t care for silly high school rivalry, I’ve been through that again and it turned out ugly. It doesn’t mean that I retired from high school fun, I just decided to have as much fun as I can without getting in too much trouble. I guess I’m getting wiser, who would have guessed?
Not soon enough the bell rang and everyone dashed through the door, and I can’t say I blame them. The weather outside was so nice and tempting that I decided to have lunch in a garden at the back of the school. Student don’t usually go there, so it’ll be quiet.
I lied down under a tree enjoying the breeze. I closed my eyes counting the hours till fifth period so I can leave the school ground and then I felt something bumping into my leg. My old school used to have a few squirrels and tiny rabbits in the garden so I opened my eyes thinking I would see a furry ball. But it turned out to be a quiet mouse with his head still buried in his book going by the name of Gabriel.
