Chapter Two: We Have Such a Perfect Family

A Year Later

“Happy birthday, Kagami and Nagami,” cheered their mother as she smiled down at her two sons.

“Thank you, Momma,” both boys said together, with Kagami adding, “We’re very happy we’re able to celebrate it as a whole family this time.”

“Yeah,” agreed Nagami, smiling down at their baby sister. “Look, even Monica is happy.”

Little Monica was born ten months after the twins’ eighth birthday. At first, the boys didn’t seem all that thrilled to be getting a little sibling, but then they came to love her, even vowing that they would protect her the way they protected their mother. Now the happy two-month-old infant giggled in her mother’s lap.

Kagami picked up one of Monica’s toys and gave it to her, giving her a kiss on the forehead as she waved the rattle around. Nagami laughed when she hit Kagami on the head with the rattle a moment later. “Ow, Sis, that hurt,” complained Kagami.

“Oh, you’re fine,” teased his brother.

Sierra smiled softly at her children. She was so happy that they got along so well. Her husband Jacob sat down on the floor next to her. “We’re so lucky, aren’t we, Love?” she asked him.

“Yeah, we are. We have such a perfect family.” He held his wife close, protectively, as the twins sat back and watched them. Was it really a perfect family that they had?

Jacob’s mother came over later that afternoon, and was as judgmental as ever. “Does Sierra even have a job to help support all these children?” she questioned her youngest son.

“No, Mother, she does not, but I make enough money to cover all the necessities.”

“And for how long, Jacob?” The wrinkled woman peered over at her grandsons. “What about when those two start getting into serious trouble?”

Sierra jumped to their defense. “They would never get into trouble like that! Nagami and Kagami are sweet boys.”

“Sweet boys wouldn’t throw juice onto their guests,” the old woman argued back.

“That was a year ago. They’re just children.”

Jacob cleared his throat. “Mother, why did you come here if not to celebrate their ninth birthday with us?”

His mother, named Janice, narrowed her eyes at him. “I came to see the only child here with a bright future, of course, Monica.”

Nagami stood up, looking at his grandmother. “My brother and I have a bright future too.”

“That’s right,” said Kagami. “We’re gonna be police officers.”

“More like criminals,” mumbled Janice, loud enough for the two boys to hear her.

“Mother!” Jacob caught her attention right away. As she gazed at him, he looked down. “Please, leave my home now, Mother. You’re upsetting my boys.”

“Hmph.” The older woman walked to the door, but shot a look over at Sierra. “You won’t be part of this family forever, little tramp. You and your mutts will be out on the streets eventually. I guarantee it,” she growled as she left the house.

Sierra looked at the floor, fighting back tears as Jacob returned to her, putting his arms around her. Kagami watched them as his brother and sister started playing together. He wished that they could just tell their grandmother to never return to their home, but then that would probably make their papa sad. Sighing, he glanced at his siblings, seeing how happy Monica seemed, and he couldn’t help smiling himself. They didn’t need their grandmother’s love. They had enough love to go around, just with their own little family.

Nagami gazed back at his brother after a while, wondering what he was thinking about. No matter how much their parents joked about it, he knew he couldn’t really read Kagami’s mind, but he could tell that his twin was thinking hard about something. What it was, he couldn’t tell.

That night, as Kagami and Nagami lay in bed together, Nagami turned on his side to see Kagami better. “Hey, Kaga, are you still awake?”

“Hm?” Kagami turned to his twin. “What is it, Naga?”

“What were you thinking about earlier? After that old lady left?”

“Oh… heh, it was nothing, Naga.” Kagami gave his brother a very convincing smile. “Everything’s okay.”

Nagami blinked at him, but didn’t ask more on it. He stared at the ceiling for a few minutes, thinking about things himself. If Kagami was saying that everything was okay, then did that mean that there was something really wrong? Shutting his eyes, Nagami figured he’d just let Kagami ponder on things. He was the smarter twin, after all, or at least that’s how it felt.

Before they could sleep, though, they heard Monica crying in her crib, and they both got up out of bed to check on her. They knew right away what she needed, and got to work on it. By the time their mother came into the room, Nagami was already throwing the dirty diaper into a trashcan, and Kagami was singing a lullaby to the little girl. She gave a sigh of relief at the sight. Her sons were the best big brothers Monica could ever want. The way they cared for her so much was wonderful. Nagami glanced up at their mother and gave her a smile. “Look, Momma, we took of everything by ourselves.”

“I see, hehe.” She knelt down by her son. “But shouldn’t you boys get some sleep? You have school in the morning. I can take care of things from here.”

Kagami walked over, and whispered, “You don’t need to, Momma. Monica is asleep again.”

“Oh. Okay.” As Sierra helped her two boys get back into bed, she realized how lucky she really was to have been blessed with such a wonderful pair of twins. She would never ask for any better sons than these two. Nagami and Kagami were her saviors in a way.

When she first met Jacob, she had been working the streets as a prostitute. His brother Stan had bought her for the night, to help his younger brother get rid of some frustration. As the two met in the hotel room, Jacob just stared at her. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and instead of sex, he asked her if they could just talk for a bit. This was an unusual request for her, but since she was getting paid anyway, she agreed to it.

He continued to buy her time for a few months, getting to know her better, until the night he walked right up to her on her street and knelt on one knee, asking for her hand in marriage. Sierra was so shocked, and didn’t immediately agree to the idea. Jacob told her that she would no longer have to sell her body, though, that she would always have a place to call home. In fact it was his idea for her to be a housewife. After an hour of his convincing, she finally agreed to it, telling herself that if she didn’t like it she would file a divorce and be done with him once and for all. It wasn’t that she didn’t love him, no. She truly was in love, but she also enjoyed making as much money as she was as a hooker.

Meeting his mother for the first time certainly seemed like Hell on Earth. Sierra even began to wonder why she was even going to bother with the whole wedding idea. Then she found out she was pregnant. She was frightened. She actually felt frightened. As she told Jacob, she expected him to be angry. They had never had sex yet, so her unborn child obviously wasn’t his. Yet, instead of him yelling at her, he embraced her. “Then marry me. We’ll have a happy, healthy family, I promise.”

“But… how can you love a baby that isn’t yours?”

“Sierra…” Jacob lifted her chin up and looked into her eyes. “We both know that whoever its father really is would never help you take care of it. Please, allow me to accept the responsibility of being its parent.”

That was the only reason that really made up her mind about things. Caring for a child was going to be so difficult on her own. She and Jacob had their wedding ceremony, and their wedding night. For once in her young adult life, she actually felt happy. A few months later, the twins were born, and Jacob signed the papers, claiming to be their father. No one questioned it in those beginning months; the boys looked just like their mother.

“Momma?” The sudden question took Sierra out of her memories, and she looked down at Kagami.

“What is it son?”

“Are you okay, Momma? Why are you crying?” he asked, making Nagami look up at her as well.

“Oh, I don’t know why, hehe.” She smiled softly at them. “Dears… please remember. Your papa and I both love you very much.”

“We know that, Momma,” the twins said in unison, making her laugh.

“We have such a perfect family.”
