Transition
My heart was being crushed with the height of longing for my green, calm and scarcely populated town as I looked through the window of the backseat of the car. Lisburgh could be considered beautiful, especially the old part, but these particular streets we were slowly crossing where surrounded by mirrored skyscrapers, overcrowded, the noise was disturbing and the sky was covered with smoky gray clouds.
After a few attempts to start a conversation the driver had settled for a resigned silence. Yes… you read right, a driver! Imagine my surprise when I arrived to the airport terminal and saw a tall thin man dressed in gray uniform with a board where my name was written in big black letters. Fun, yes? Who use uniformed drivers nowadays?! Apparently the Old bat, the pet name I started to call my lovely Great Aunt.
A few minutes later, more like half an hour, the scenery started to change from big buildings to beautiful little houses and as the ride continued the Houses transformed into large houses with big gardens. We were heading to the coast and as we arrived a long large avenue, completely circumscribed by walls and eight large and fancy looking gates, the car slowed.
“We’re almost there!” Jack the driver announced sounding somewhat relieved. I chortled ‘Like there’s a lot to look around besides these walls. Oh my god, I’m seconds away of being walled in’. I mentally joked as we came to a stop in front of the last right sided of the road gate.
While Jack announced our presence through the intercom I couldn’t stop admiring the delicate ironwork of the gate structure which resembled an intrinsic black spider web with a strange silver circle at the middle and behind it a large street of gray stone bordered with what seemed a lush wood. Believe me or not but it took five minutes before we actually arrived at the mansion, passing through woods that were replaced by well cared gardens.
The old mansion was a sight, built with blackish stone in a gothic style full of lacy details and a big onyx circle symbol incorporated above the main entrance, the massive front doors were made of darkened oak timber with silver decoration, the windows where huge with dark frames and no shades but covered with what seemed heavy muslin.
On the top off the black marble stairs that gave access to the front doors were my parents accompanied by a tall, dry and bald man in a black suit.
“Honey, welcome to your new Home” she yelled from atop of the stairs as I exited the car.
“I’ll take your bags so you can go ahead” said Jack. Arriving at the top landing of the stairs my parents hugged and kissed me.
“We’ve missed you son.” My father told me before turning and waving in the unknown man direction.
“This is Daniel, the person in charge of all that happens in the estate” he told me as the said man looked me from head to toe.
“Welcome to Cliff Shore Estate in the name of all the workers” he simply stated.
“Honey we would love to stay here with you but we are late to a meeting in the city so we’ll talk when we arrive. Meanwhile Daniel will give you the Grand tour and show you your room. You’re in for a great surprise and I just know you going to love it.” At that moment I finally noticed that indeed they were too well dressed for a welcome home reception.
“Cya” I coldly replied trying to reconfirm my dislike for being here, but they didn’t even acknowledged my tantrum or pretended not to.
“Then can you please follow me while I show you the house” I closely trailed Daniel as he showed me all the divisions of the house. The ground floor had a reception hall, a formal and smaller dining room, a huge kitchen, an indoor pool, a smoke room, a drawing room, a ball room, a gigantic living room, one of the biggest and beautiful libraries I ever seen, eight bathrooms and a private garage full of collectors cars. “Your parents told me you were forced to leave your VW Beetle behind. So you can use any of these cars to go to school the keys are inside and everyone is ready to use”.
The visit continued to the first floor that was mainly composed with bedrooms all with private bathrooms, including my parent’s suite, but it still had small living rooms, a smaller library, and music room.
“Besides the main building they are 4 cottages near the garden where the workers families live. There’s me, my wife and our son that is studying at college so he only comes home at weekends, the cook and his wife, the gardener, which lives with his son that is your age, and Jack and his wife that recently had a baby. The house cleaning is the responsibility of a private company.
Outside we have the front wood and garden and on the back you’ll find a porch with seats and tables, a pool and its house, a tennis court, an English garden, a pond and the back forest. If you walk the east path for a few minutes you’ll arrive to the cliffs and these cliffs have carved stairs that give access to an exclusive beach that is used by all the eight mansion of this avenue. You can explore it later but now let’s go see your room since you are probably tired.”
My room was, in fact, all the attic area and I could see it was especially decorated for my tastes since the furniture had a different style than the rest of the house. The stairs ended at the middle of the room where a large and modern living room was, at left side I had a large office area with a top of the line computer and laptop resting upon a large black desk, at the right side of the room, upon a small dais, was a large bed with a simple canopy, black hangings and dressed in black satin sheets.
Besides all this, it also had, near the bed, a walk in closet, a huge roman inspired bathroom and all the tall windows in the ‘room’ where covered with heavy dark curtains. This was the house where I would spend the next years of my life and I hate to admit it but I liked it.
“Well your bags are already here. You can now rest, undo your belongings or even explore the outside areas. Before I go I must inform you that due the distance whenever dinner is ready or somebody arrives for you a soft bell will ring and you can also use that phone over there to communicate to the other floors. Now if you don’t have any questions I will excuse myself and go back to work.”
“I think I’ll rest for now. Thank you for showing the place.” I said while heading for the appealing twin bed and as soon as I fell over it sleep claimed me.
“Did you sense it Josh?” asked an excited voice.
“Calm down Michael. And yes I sensed it. But the power was quite weak and if I didn’t paid close attention it would have passed undetected.”
“Yeah me too. But it was strong enough to disrupt the ward. You think the others also sensed ‘it’?”
“Hum… We are the ones with more sensibility to power fluctuations but since we all set the wards they should have. Maybe it’s finally here!”
“Well… Gram told us before passing that she had found it and would make sure it came our way. She wouldn’t lie to us about such important matter.”
“I agree. But she passed away two months ago and until now we haven’t meet it yet. Besides she told us that other four were at our school and we’ve been searching for two years and haven’t found them so I was afraid this one would be the same.”
“You’re right but now we are stronger than two years ago so the search at school will be faster.”
“Hope you’re right and that Gram didn’t make a mistake. Did you saw the new owners… they didn’t had a drip of power. And to think we went to that housewarming with such high hope.”
“Yes but they are nice people and they told us their son was away. If you recall Gram premonition she said ‘twelve of a year’ and that could mean twelve people with the same age.”
“So you real think it’s the son?”
“The probabilities are high. He is from Gram’s family, same age as us and if we add that school starts on Monday the power we felt can be he coming home.”
“But if he had arrived Daniel would have contacted one of us.”
“True but perhaps he’s busy. Let’s get everybody and pay him a visit?”
“Ok! Let’s meet at their front gate in 20.” Josh said while holding the cell on his shoulder and dressing his jeans.
Twenty minutes later a group of eight teenagers were standing in front of the big gate of Cliff Shore Estate. The feeling of excitement between them could be felt in the air as their leader Michael pressed on the intercom.
“Cliff Shore Estate.”
“Hi Rosie. Can we speak with Daniel?”
“Hi children. I’m afraid it’s impossible cause he’s out on an errand. Do you want to come in and wait? Do you know the new?” Without waiting for an answer Rosie continued “The new owner’s son arrived today!”
