The Lost Prince: 001

Thom Erickson was a loser. Small and thin, his eyeglasses perched on his nose and a bunch of books in his arms, he was the epitome of a nerd. No one who amounted to as somebody in his school dared to befriend him, fearing that they would be infected with his nerdiness. He had good grades and wasn’t bad looking, but the students who had guts and tried to talk to him were turned off by his quietness. Even those who bullied him got tired of his attitude. No matter how they tried to torture him with words or beatings, he stayed unresponsive like a statue. In the end, they left him alone.

His home life wasn’t much different. His parents were always away on business. They loved him but didn’t know how to deal with him, and since he was good and didn’t cause any trouble, they left him to his own devices. His older sister Savyn who was his only confidante during his childhood had left home and was working in some other state so he was alone, but he didn’t care. He liked it that way.

With all that impassiveness, his eyes would light up when he finds a new book to read. Yes, his secret obsession were books, but not just any books. He loved reading fairytales and books of fantasy, action and adventure. He would fantasize that it was him doing all sorts of magic, killing ogres and riding dragons in the imaginary world where the heroes and heroines of his novels reside. He was glad that his sister worked with a publishing house. She would send him tons of books and he always looked forward to the day it would arrive in his doorstep. He would also haunt the library during his free time. Mr. Ainsted, the librarian would often find Thom with his nose buried in books day after day and had to remind him that it was closing time. A quiet thank you would be the only response from Thom as he gathers up his things and follow the kind librarian out of the library. This was his routine all through out his first year.

On his 2nd year in high school, tragedy befell his family. His parents were on their way home from a business trip when they were killed in a head on collision with another car. He had to move to New York so he could be with his sister. He wasn’t sad to leave. He had nothing holding him back. He would, of course miss the library and Mr. Ainsted. The librarian was kind to Thom, but that was all.
