Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Charlotte made her way over to the children’s section of the book store with Eleanor holding on to her hand. “ Ellie, you may pick out five books, than this week we’ll read a different book every night, how does that sound?,” Charlotte asked looking down at her daughter, admiring the way her little cheeks got fat as she smiled. “Good. I want to get the book on Cinderella and the one about the genie,” she exclaimed. “Ok, while you look I’m going to be right here in front looking at this table, when you’re done just walk to me,” Charlotte said bending down so she could look her in the eyes, she saddened a bit as the sea blue and green color reflected back was not hers. She kissed her head and watched her totter-off to the children’s corner. Turning back to the layout of books in front of her, she began looking at the back covers and sleeves trying to find anything interesting. She stopped at one particular book and debated with herself if it was worth it.
Turing to the first page, she jumped when a painfully familiar voice to her left said,” It’s a good read. A bit slow at the beginning but, everything changes midway,”. She moved her head slowly to the left and promptly dropped the book. There was the man who still brought tears to her eyes to this day, the man who deserted her and most of all, the father of her child.
He smiled at her, “Shocked to see me, I suppose,”. Charlotte just looked at him and than she felt the anger that she had harbored all those years rush to her. She felt herself turning red and faced him more directly. She saw him take in her face and saw the smile rapidly disappearing.
“ Shocked to see me? That’s all you have to say after all these years. Do you even understand what I gone through these past five years?!,” she said through clenched teeth, forcing herself to keep her voice down for Eleanor’s sake.
“ Charlotte, I thought we went through all this when we separated. I told you, I wasn’t ready for-,” Charlotte cut him off taking a step towards him looking into the same eyes she had been looking into for five years.
“ Why didn’t you call me back after I left you all those messages?,” she exclaimed.
He rubbed his neck with one hand and shrugged, “ I just thought that I was helping you. Maybe you needed that separation,”.
She was about to speak again, when she looked down and saw Charlotte coming towards them. “Mummy, I have five books! And I found Cinderella! All by myself Mummy!” she exclaimed in wonderful innocence. Charlotte felt her eyes water as she looked at her. She bent down and smiled at her taking the books, “ That’s wonderful mon petite. We’ll leave in a minute do want to go and sit on the bench for mommy? I’ll be there in a minute,” she said seeing Eleanor look curiously over at Henry.
She beamed up at him, “You have eyes like me!”, she exclaimed happily. Charlotte forced herself to stop crying and stood up. Henry was staring at Eleanor with a shocked look on his face, than he heard Eleanor’s comment and he swallowed thickly before saying, “Yes, yes I do,”. “Please go sit on the bench for mummy Eleanor,” Charlotte said trying to minimize their contact. Eleanor gave a curious look but complied and sat on the bench looking at her shoes.
“I have…a daughter. My fucking god, I have a daughter Charlotte. Why didn’t you tell me!,” he exclaimed.
Charlotte’s eyes widened at the absurdity of the statement. “Why the hell do you think I was leaving you those messages! It certainly wasn’t for you. I would have liked to believe that if we had supposedly loved each other, even if we did break up at least you would return my calls. You have never known me to be needy, why would you think it than?,” she hissed, she felt her face turning red.
“Why didn’t you tell me on your messages I would have responded to them than,” she said his voice getting low. “Because it was too impersonal, I was having your child, I wasn’t going to inform you over a phone call. I really needed your help. As a friend at least. I was a twenty-two year old pregnant girl with three more years of school. You have no idea how hard it was for me…for both of us. But we’re fine now, Eleanor has everything and everyone she will ever need,” she said glancing over at her little girl.
“I’m so sorry Charlotte. I would never abandon you like that if I knew.,” he said his eyes showing his regret. “I find that hard to believe, seeing as you abandoned me when things got difficult.,” she spat her eyes narrowing at him . “ That’s unfair. I would never do that to my own child. ,” he pleaded. “ I don’t see how the mother of your child, is so different. However, it doesn’t matter seeing as how you wont be a part of our lives,” she said looking at him determinedly. She would be damned if he thought that he could uproot the life that she built for her and her daughter. “ You cannot be serious Charlotte! A child deserves to know her father, you shouldn’t use my mistakes to deny her a father, “ he said. She scoffed, “ And now you want to give me parenting advice? I have been a damn good single parent for the past five years! I refuse to let you into my daughters life when you will inevitably hurt her. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my daughter and I have to leave. We have dinner plans,”. She glared at him one last time and went over to Eleanor.
Henry watched Charlotte as she walked over to their child. Child…he couldn’t believe he had a daughter. And a beautiful one at that…she had a head of curly brown/blond curls and a beautiful golden skin complexion. She had cherub cheeks and little pink lips. Her chubby little hands clutched the books she picked up and her eyes…he would have never thought that seeing his eyes on another being would affect him so much. He watched dumbstruck as she gave her mother a dazzling smile and grabbed her hand, tottering over to the counter to pay for her books.
Charlotte felt Henry watching them and couldn’t help but feel a bit unnerved. She certainly didn’t expect to ever see him again and she kept telling herself that that was how she would have liked to keep it. She paid for Eleanor’s books and took the bag from the teller. Grabbing Eleanor’s hand she headed for the door and shot Henry one last warning look.
