on The Sting

“Alex!” I could hear in the distance of my dreams, “Alex, get your fucking ass up!” this time it was much closer, yelling in my ear to get up.

“Aw, fuck!” I cried out, getting out of bed and throwing my pillow at Kevin, my brother. He came screaming in my ear with a megaphone to wake my sleepy ass up for school. “Kevin, you can be such a fucking ass sometime.” I called, sitting up and staring at him though my sleepy eyes.

“Yeah, but I am your fucking ass,” he joked, throwing the pillow back at be then jumping on top of me and straddling me around my groin.

“Kevin, get off!” I yelled at him, trying to push me off. We weren’t related- well… yes we where- we where half brothers from my moms side and he treats me like I am some homo at times.

“Ah…but don’t you like it when I do this,” he said, pinning my arms above my head and his face just inches away from mind. I was left speechless and I did not know what he was going do to do next few times in the past he would plant a kiss on me and today I didn’t know what to expect. I was only a freshman in high school, and Kevin was going into his junior year at the local university here in town. He didn’t room on campus ‘because he could just take a ten minute drive across town for his classes.

“I said get the fuck off!” I said, struggling to get free from my brothers grasp.

“Fine” he said getting off of me, but not before he thrust his lips onto mine. Laughing as he headed out of the room. “Alex,” Kevin said in a cool voice

“What,” I said ignored with him.

“What’s this?”

I turned to see Kevin holding what I’ve been trying to hold for the past two weeks, a ½ a full bag of dog treats. “Nothing I quickly said, grabbing the bag out of his hands and placing it in my dresser.

“You know you can’t have a pet,” Kevin said sternly.

“I know…but-” though my brother liked to joke around with me a lot, he was strict at what our mom says. I’ve been begging for a pet of my own from the longest of time, but our apartment complex doesn’t allow pets.

“I know you love to have a dog, but we can’t have one.” Kevin said as he draped his arms around me neck, “Not because of the ‘no pet rule’ but you have the worse luck with animals.”

“No I don’t.”

“Yes you do. Remember Yum Yum???”

“My hamster?”

“Died- not within two weeks mom bought it for you. And Coli, your goldfish. And Jinx your kitten that grandma gave you. Not to mention…”

“Okay I get your point, stepping out of his grasp, “But I’ve grown; maybe my luck with animals has change.”

“Trust me kid, it’s never goanna change,” and he kissed me on the nose. “Now come on, it time to for school.” and he walked out of my room.

I took out the dog treats and tossed them on my bed then I went to over to my closet to get dress for school. Black torn top- which I think was clean- and baggy ripped jeans that where too big for me. Before I left, I packed the dog treats in my back pack to bring to my dog that I was taking care of. I had found a dog about three weeks ago in poor condition, it didn’t have any tags or nothing on it, and it was badly hurt so I been keeping it outside in a small cave that I had found for him to live in till he feels better. So, every morning and afternoon, before and after school I’ve been seeing him and taking care of him. ‘Maybe when he is all better, I can bring it home and prove to my mom and Kevin that I can have one more chance at having a pet.’ I though as I packed my bag for school.

I ran out the door like always after breakfast, not for the bus, but for my dog. I wanted to spend as much time as I could with him before the bus came. The cave that I kept him in wasn’t too far from the bus stop or from my house, but the more time I have with the dog, the better. And for the past few days he was looking healthier, he has started to play with me now, planting his dog kisses all over my face and hands, putting a smile on my face and a laugh in my voice. I came to a stop when I got outside of the cave, panting and wheezing I unfolded my napkin that held my bacon and half eaten piece of pancake that I didn’t eat this morning.

“Here boy, here Spike.” I crawled into the cave only to find it empty. “Crap. Not again!” and I quickly backed out of the cave and started searching for my dog. I called out his name and whistling, but nothing. I finally found his tracks and started to fallow them. I wasn’t going to let this dog go with out a fight. I ran after him, fallowing his tracks and I didn’t care if I am late or missed school for this. Fallowing the dog’s tracks, I missed placed my footing, causing me to fall head first down a steep hill. I toppled down the hill, head over heals and getting cuts and scraps from sticks and rocks that scraped against my skin. I then fell right down into a raging river, hitting my head on numerous rocks causing me to black out.

“You okay kid?” a voice asked me that I didn’t know. I opened my eyes and found that I was in a small wood room.

“Yeah, I think so…where am I?” I asked, sitting up and holding my head.

“On The Sting” the man said. He was dressed up in a sailor’s outfit and what looked like to be a pirate.

“Ow, my head.” I had gotten up to fast, causing my head to hurt more.

“Nasty spill you took. Glad we had found you, we did. Captain said to just leave you to the sharks, but Mr. Wills… he told him to take you abroad.”

“Mr. Wills?”

“Aye, a passenger upon our ship.” the sailor got up from his stool that he sat upon next to my hammock I laid in.

“Sailor, can you tell me where your heading is?”

“To Siletz.” and he walked out of the room.

I was clueless as to where I was, where we were heading or to what had happen to me. I laid my head back down as to try to recall the recent event then it dung on me-

“The dog!” I shouted, quickly sitting up again and causing my head to hurt once more. I remember that I was running after the dog, and fell over a cliff and into a river, which must have carried me here to this place. But where was this place?

I looked down at myself and found that bandages replaced my shirt I also found that my neck was also wrapped up in a bandage. I was well into my thoughts when a knock on the door sounded from my door.

“Yes?” I called and the door opened and the sailor from before came back in with cloths in hand.

“Here are your new cloths sir and the captain wishes to meet you when you are fully dress.” he set the cloths on a barrel near the door and went out, bowing at the waist.

I peered down under the blanket that was wrapped around me and saw that I was totally naked underneath. I grabbed the pirate looking cloths and quickly pulled them over my naked skin. There was no mirror in the cell, but staring down at myself; I thought I looked down right ridiculous. Opening the cabin door, I saw the sailor standing outside.

“Aw, sir... This way,” and he lead me down the narrow hallway of the ship to the captain’s quarters. He knocked and there was low “come in” from behind the door. The sailor opened the door and stood aside for me to go in.

“You’re awake,” a rough voice said over by the table which stood in the middle of the cabin.

“Yes sir, um…thank you for saving me.”

“Don’t. I wanted to leave you floating for the sharks for their next meal. Its Mr. Wills that you should be thanking. I just brought you in here to tell you that I want no funny business while you are on my vessel. You stay out of my men’s way and don’t bother any of my guests, especially Mr. Wills; he doesn’t like to be disturbed. Got it boy?”

“Um…Aye, sir.”

“Good, dismissed.” and I quickly exited the cabin. Throughout the time with the cabin I never saw his face, which I though was quit odd. But I paid no mind to it and pushed it out of my head.

I headed for the deck to get a better view as to where I was. I didn’t know where I was going and got lost below in the many narrow halls in below the deck. I happen to stumble into the kitchen where the cook fixed me up something to eat. News had already gotten around the ship about me, they didn’t know what to expect from me most of the time and I though the same way. After my quick lunch, the cook gave me directions on to get up on deck. I said my thanks and headed for the top. The sun was setting, and the last few rays of light were just going down and the stars where coming up. I looked around the ship and saw only black water all around-no land for miles. I asked the closest sailor near me if the water was black during the day and he said it was.

I circled the ship about five times, staring out into the black water and around the ship, looking at the crows nest and wanting to get a better view. About the six time I lapped around the deck I spotted someone that I hadn’t notice before, ‘h must have just had come up when I was on the back on the boat.’ I though. Looking at him, I saw that he was real proper, yet he seemed sad. He wore a long sleeve white shirt with ruffles on the cuffs and a black button down vest with black slacks. His hair was medium length and platinum blond and he wore a long cape that flapped in the wind. His eyes where closed so I couldn’t see what color they where. In his hands I also notice a cigarette already lit and smoking. He took a long drag from it and let out the smoke from his nose. I stared up at him, gazing at him with aw; he was so beautiful in the moonlight with his hair shining in the glow as he stood on the bow. I then felt like a deer in headlights as his head turned and our eyes met. I quickly ducked down behind some gun powder barrels and wished that he hadn’t seen me. But he did. I soon heard footsteps coming closer and my heart began to race with each step I heard. I covered my ears and closed my eyes to drown out the sound of his steps coming towards me, but it never made a difference when the man stopped right next to where I was hiding.

“Hello and good evening,” a deep voice said above me. I peered up and saw I was staring up into his majestic blue eyes that were set in an almost pale gray face. I was speechless, from far away he looked beautiful but from far away- wow, he was gorgeous. “Hello” he said again and I quickly stood up.

“Hello,” I said with a bow. I licked my lips as we stared at each other, though we didn’t say anything.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.

“Fine now. Um…” I dropped my head down and turned beat red, I felt so embarrassed to be talking with someone so beautiful; I never even get the courage to talk to the popular girls at school.

“That’s good. Do you know anything about the city we’re going to?” he then asked. I shook my head. He then came over to my side and draped an arm around me, leading me away from the gun powder and back over to the bow. All that time as he talked to me about I started in ah, though I snapped out of it a few times as I remembered that he was a guy not a girl.

“So…are you a demon?” I asked, after he told me how this city was filled with various demons. I felt really embarrassed after that and turned away. I heard him laugh hard deep in his gut. I grew nerves as he draped his arm over me once more and whispered in my ear-

“Do you think I’m a demon?”

I took a huge breath in and turned to face him, his smile was almost too evil and his eyes pierced though my soul. I quickly shook my head. “You’re to pretty to be a demon.” I said, my face turned away from his. To hide the color in my face.

“Thank you, it’s not everyday a man of my stature gets a comment from the same sex.”

“What! No, no I’m not…it’s just…”

He rested a finger on my lips to silence me; he gave me a wink before leading me over to the right side of the ship. “Care for a better view of where we are?” he asked and not a moment after I nodded, he was up on the edge and climbing the rope ladder to the crows nest. I waited about five minutes before I saw the sailor who has position up in the nest come down. He waved hi to me and told me to go up, I then slowly climbed up onto the edge and up onto the ladder, my heart racing faster and faster with every step I took to meet up with this unknown stranger who I found to be the utmost beautiful man that I have ever seen.
