It had been too hot in the club for Emily so she had stepped out for some air. Sitting on the low wall surrounding the club she ran a hand through her hair and felt the wind caress her body. She heard the dull thud thud thud of the music and she closed her eyes for a few seconds trying to force away the drunken thoughts before opening her eyes and checking her watch. It was twenty past two in the morning, standing she turned away from the club and headed towards her home.
There was an eerie silence all she could hear was the defiant sounds of her boots making contact with pavement. She stopped. She usually could still hear the music thudding from here but now the area was totally silent she could not feel the wind on her skin or hear it whispering in her ear. She felt fear rise inside of her and she turned on her heal half expecting to see some monstrous being looming over her. She spun too fast and disorientated herself. Stumbling she steadied herself on the wall nearest to her.
She felt the presence of the spell before it hit her enabling to gather her thoughts enough to put up a shield spell, the spell smashed upon it and both the shield and unknown spell shattered; the force of it pushing her backwards. She landed on her back and rolled just in time to avoid the second blow. Panting she pulled herself to her knees.
“Need help boss?” came a voice. She closed her eyes her mind feeling for people near by, she found six men in the surrounding area then every one in the club – their thoughts far away then she understood her attacker had put some trap up and a powerful one.
“yes” came a stern voice. Emily was filled with dread, confusion and fear and magically she lashed out.
“I burn bright, bring you light, hope and desire” she began the spell the words helping to focus her. She was forced to abandon the spell to avoid three others. She dodged the first two with elegant twirls, Wizard duels was one of her hobbies and the skill she had from it she was using now to survive. She dodged the third but a fourth she didn’t see hit her in the small of her back. She hit the ground she was conscious but she couldn’t move and every moment her eyes were becoming heavier, she tried to focus her mind finding the spell she started picking away at it, fraying it with her own magic.
The footsteps were coming closer and she worked more frantically, determinedly to escape. She felt the spell break she pushed herself to her feet and kicked the nearest man in the shin and summoning stones to charge at the men, the stones never made it to their target. She was surrounded, aware of her head and body aching yet too afraid to give up the fight.
‘I’m not weak, I’m not weak’ her voice screamed desperately in her head. She summoned a ball of pure energy and threw it at one of the men it hit him square in the face breaking his nose with a sickly crunch. Satisfaction egged her on she summoned every bit of energy she had ( though leaving enough to survive – if she over done it she knew she’d kill herself) she launched another attack but no matter how many times she beat them back they came back again and again.
Backed into a corner Emily assessed herself, she wasn’t seriously hurt, scraped knee and elbow and a gash on her head from her fall, but she knew she would not be able to win. Yes, she had knocked two out and bloodied and bruised the others but they were stronger than her alone. The faces came into sharp relief as she leant against the wall for support and glared at her tormentors.
A hand shot out grabbing her by the throat as she collapsed.
“Sleep angel” he said his tone almost loving.
“Blue… eyes” she whispered giving in and letting herself fall into the abyss.
The sun beamed down and through Bryan’s bedroom window and his alarm clock screamed for him to wake, his response however, was to roll over and put the pillow over his head. He slammed his hand on the alarm before drifting back to sleep. In his sleep he dreamt. A thigh poisonous smog surrounded him, he was running searching for some one, he caught a glimpse of a silhouette and a face before it vanished.
“Emily!” Bryan roared as he started from sleep the nagging feeling that some thing was wrong was heightened by the fact his clock now read 1.10pm and she hadn’t called him to shout at him for being late. He snatched his phone up and hit the redial button. Dressing as it rang on loud speak he cursed inwardly, the cold dread that had filled his stomach multiplied as the phone continued to ring before cutting off to the answer machine.
“Hey This is Em leave a message after the beep. BEEEEEEEEEEEP”
“Hey Em, this is Bryan give us a call as soon as K? Thanks”
He left the message in vain hope that she was just having a shower or in another room but some thing told him this was not the case. He found himself grabbing his car keys and heading for his car.
He got to her apartment the door was hanging off, blood was marking the walls, and in the centre of the room lay a body burnt to nothing more than a black mass. He stared at the mass and pulled out his phone.
“Emergency operator”
“I need the police” he said tears streaming from his eyes. “Some ones been murdered”
He was soon transferred to the police. Sitting on the stairs he stared at the black mass and waited for the police to come.
