Memories haunt my dreams
I can hear her breathing near me. By the tension of her body next to mine, I can feel that she has not fallen asleep yet. When she does fall asleep, all her muscles relax and she is splayed out on the bed like a cloud.
My eyes are closed already and the noises of her breathing and of the heater are starting to dim. There is only dark before my eyes, and …
She is standing over me. Her pale hair is falling around her face and her eyes are staring at me.
“Whuh?” I mumble. My face is stiff, and the book under my cheek is pressing rather uncomfortably into the side.
“You’re drooling all over my books.” She says.
“Well…” I scramble for a retort, but she stares so intently that she distracts me. Her eyes are caramel, he thinks to himself, his stomach growling.
“Ergh! No retort then! You lose, sir!” she exclaims. I mock-bang my forehead against the oak table.
“You want some candy?” she asks, “perhaps that would solve your drooling problem.”
“Sure,” I take a proper look at her face and the expression on it. She has a sweet little smile on her face, all to belie her recent (temporary) victory at witty repartee.
“Here,” she reaches inside the front pouch of her sweatshirt and hands me a Mars bar, “not a feast, but, there you go.” She shrugs and looks down – starting to realize who she’s dealing with, no doubt. “Do you want to take a walk?” she smiles brightly and looks at the carpet again.
“Ok,” I shrug, and follow her out of the library. The overcast sky is bright compared to the sleepy fluorescent lights. I stumble around, squinting my eyes. The world is unfocused around me, and the scene fades out…
Then it’s back to the drill, and I walk the grimy, never-ending maze of my dreams for the rest of the night.
Leila’s POV
Josh is so warm against her and he DOES curl around her affectionately. These are the moments she can trick herself into believing that they’re a normal couple, that he DOES love her and not just wish to own her completely….It’s nice to pretend to be normal….It reminds her of when they first met…What a….Nice day that was….

“So do you always sleep in the library? …That’s not what it’s for you know.”
“So sue me. I was tired the couch was mostly empty. No one seemed to be coming back for their stuff.”
“So you just decide to use it as a pillow?”
“Yeah why not?”
“Because it’s not yours! You shouldn’t have touched it unless you were going to move it out of the way or something!”
“But then you’d probably be mad at me for moving your shit, SO, either way I’m in trouble. And this way I still got my nap.”
“You are going to buy me new books if the pages dry sticking together.”
“Uh, NO, I’m not. Not without some sort of compensation.” His face broke into a wide grin and she could see his ever present canines making the rest of his teeth seem sharper more carnivore like………Wait a minute did he just?!
SMACK!
“……………..Ow.”
“How DARE you suggest such a thing!”
“Chill out! It’s called a joke! My god you’re uptight aren’t you?”
“Suggesting a woman whore herself for profit is NOT a joke!”
“Tch, I never said you had to whore yourself for me. I’d just want one kiss…Or maybe a date. BUT you’re too uptight for me so never mind. Enjoy your soggy books that I’m not going to pay for.” He went to turn away.
“I am NOT uptight!”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah!”
“Prove it!”
“Would an uptight girl have a pet rat?”
“A WHAT?!”
“Pet rat.”
“You don’t look the type.”
“Come with me then and I’ll prove it to you.”
“Who’s driving?”
“Me. My place I drive.”
“Fair enough.”
It was a short drive to her apartment……Of course Josh had to adjust the seat in the aqua blue Prius so his head didn’t hit the ceiling, which made her giggle.
Room 301. They arrived stepping out of the elevator and walked down the hallway and then she unlocked the door.
“Caramel! Mommy’s home!” She called out as she made her way to the bedroom.
Josh stood by the door unsure of whether or not he was supposed to make himself at home. And then suddenly he was staring a big cream colored rat straight in the face. It was huge! The size of his hands! “HOLY SHIT!” He back pedaled and hit the wall with an audible thud. “JESUS CHRIST WOMAN!”
“SSSSSH! You’re scaring him…Don’t worry baby momma will protect you.” She cuddled the rodent lovingly stroking it’s back to calm it down.
