A man in a white lab coat approached another man that was seated in front of a monitor. “Dr. Stevens! I just got back from checking on test subject #19404. He seems to be missing!” the man said in a panic.
The doctor’s head shot up from the monitor and he looked at the man. “When did this happen? How long has he been missing?” Dr. Stevens said in a calm voice.
“We don’t know, sir. When one of our researchers went to check on him, he wasn’t in the room. She thought he was in the bathroom,” the other man explained.
Dr. Stevens ran his hand through his chestnut hair and tapped his fingers on the table with his free hand. “Who else knows that the subject is missing?” the doctor asked.
The other man thought for a few seconds and answered, “That would be five people, including myself and you.”
“Is Doctor Jennings one of the other three?” Dr. Stevens asked. The man shook his head in response. “Good, let’s keep it that way. I need you to get a small team together to search the city for the subject. He is vital for our research,” he said as he faced the monitor again.
“What should I tell Dr. Jennings if he asks?” the other man questioned.
“Tell him that we are still conducting tests and need more time,” Dr. Stevens replied. The other man walked out of the room.

“Ok, so is he gay?” asked a bouncy female voice as she pointed to a guy in a crowd of people.
“I don’t know. Why are you even asking me?” her friend asked as he rubbed the back of his neck. The brunette girl looked at the spiky-haired blonde sitting next to her. “Don’t you gays have some kind of radar to pick up on who is straight, bi or gay?” the girl asked.
“I have no clue. Mine must be broken or something,” he answered truthfully.
“Come on, Brett. You aren’t trying,” she said with a smile.
“Chelsea, let it go already. I know you are happy that I came out of the closet and everything. It’s just been a month since I came out and I am still adjusting to this,” Brett stated as he stood up from the mall bench. “Let’s go. What else do you need here? I have work at 4:40pm, remember?” Brett reminded her, as she stood up next to him. Chelsea was shorter compared to Brett; he stood at 5’10 tall while Chelsea stood at only 5’6 tall.
“I am feeling a bit hungry. Want to eat before we continue?” she asked as they started to walk.
“Sure, what do you feel like eating today?” Brett asked as the scent of food filled the air.
Fifteen minutes had passed before they sat at an empty table with their food.
“Aren’t you scared of how many calories are in that to be eating that?” Brett said with a smile as Chelsea took a bite of her burger. She gave a little snarl as she chewed her food.
“Are you on some kind of diet?” Chelsea asked as she pointed at his small plate of sushi. Chelsea threw a French fry into her mouth and said, “So, how many times a week do you go to the gym to get your body to look like that?”
Brett gave her a shy smile as his face started to turn red. “My parents were health nuts, so I don’t really have to go to the gym,” Brett stated as he continued to eat his sushi.
“Are you going to Fusion this Friday?” Chelsea asked, referring a local gay bar/club in town.
“Maybe. I have to run, or I will be late for work.” Brett said as he stood up and headed for an exit.
“What? It’s only 2:47 pm. Where are you going?” Chelsea yelled, but Brett just waved to her.
“I’ll call you later.”
~~Present~~
‘I hate hospitals,’ Brett thought as he sat in the waiting room. It felt like hours had passed sitting in this white-colored room with light pink floral designs along the windows. A nurse had asked Brett to wait in the waiting room for a police officer. She had explained that he had to fill out a report.
Every once in a while a nurse or a doctor would walk by, and every time, he hoped that someone would tell him that the kid was ok.
A man wearing light blue came over to Brett with two cups of coffee in hand. He looked to be in his early twenties. He handed Brett a cup and sat next to him. “Thanks,” was all Brett could say.
“You’re welcome. I heard that you were the one who found the kid in the park. Is he a friend of yours?” the guy asked as he took a sip of his coffee and glanced at Brett. The guy’s hazelnut brown eyes met Brett’s soft light blue eyes.
“No, I don’t know who he is,” Brett answered, and looked away from the guy’s eyes.
“If you didn’t know the guy then why did you help him? Why not just walk away?”
Brett looked at the guy in shock. ‘Isn’t he a nurse? Why would he say something like that?’ he thought as he was about to respond. As Brett opened his mouth to voice his opinion, a cough got their attention. Brett looked up and saw a police officer.
“You must be Brett Davis. I am Officer Samuel,” the man said, taking out a notepad from his chest pocket.
“See you around,” the male nurse said to Brett as he left.
“I have a few questions to ask you. When did you find the victim sleeping in the park?” the officer asked.
“Uh… shortly after midnight I guess,” Brett answered.
“May I ask what you were doing walking in the park late at night?” he asked as he scribbled something in his pad.
“It’s a shortcut home from work,” Brett answered.
“Was there anyone else there with you before you went into the park?”
“Yeah, a co-worker helped me close,” Brett answered.
“What is the person’s name? The name of the store where you work?”
“Her name is Alexis, and it’s Twilight Café on 6th Avenue.”
“Ok, Mr. Davis, thank you for your time. I will need your phone number and address, if I have any more questions.” He gave him the needed information, and the officer turned to walk away.
“Wait! How is he doing?” he asked the officer. The officer looked at him as he put his notepad in his pocket.
“He was badly beaten and from what the doctors have told me, he was raped multiple times,” the officer said in a flat tone and walked away. “Have a nice day, Mr. Davis.”
Brett sat in his chair, in shock that the kid had been raped. While he was trapped in his own thoughts, a voice called out to him. He glanced up to see a doctor.
“You are Mr. Davis, right? You can see the patient if you like,” he informed Brett.
Brett slowly got out of his chair and followed the doctor. With every step Brett took his legs felt like rubber as he neared the room. The doctor stood in front of the door. Brett stood there for a moment, looking at the wooden door, then he slowly turned the handle and the door opened with a soft click.
