The Meeting

Eye Of The Beholder

The Meeting :

Nero leaned over Lilly’s sleeping form, she seemed not be feeling any other effects from the drugs her boyfriend had fed her. He curled a lock of dark hair around his calloused finger and moved it from her face. Stroking her cheeks he went further and felt the pulse in her neck. He heart was beating at a slightly elevated rate but nothing to be worried about. Moving away he took one last look before lowering the curtain on her.

Nero seated himself at the table he had constructed out of a tombstone. The chair he had found abandoned behind a local restaurant, instead of fixing the one slightly wonky leg they had simply thrown it out and replaced it. He reached for the fire wood he had managed to collect from the trees in the graveyard and began breaking off twigs to create some kindling. He may be used to the lower temperature but he was almost sure that Lilly wouldn’t be. Even though he had placed his thickest blanket over her she had still shivered for a while when he had first brought her here. Lighting the fire in the stone circle Nero gathered water from the canister he had placing the pan, another spoil from the restaurant, on the stand he boiled water. It wouldn’t be long before Lilly would wake and a cup of tea may be in order.

While going through the motions he remembered the first time he had ever laid eyes on her. She was like a ray of sun shine he had never felt on his skin.

Nero stood at the edge of the clearing, it was dark and this was the furthest he would go from his sanctuary. In this light no one would see his form and come looking. Every night he would stand and look at the world he could never be a part of. The life he could never have. Watching the men and women eating their supper in the restaurant that backed onto the graveyard wood. The way they interacted. Nero had no had human contact in over 16 years but this kept him sane. Knowing there was life out there. This was his entertainment and his life lesson. He watched a couple as they sat on a bench outside the restaurant. They were sat holding hands and obviously talking about something important they couldn’t take their eyes off each other. Nero held his hands together, no one had ever held his hand except his mother and that was only a fleeting touch when she had to.

After over and hour of observing the crowds passing before him Nero made a move to home when something caught his eye. A girl, she was simply dressed in jeans and a black tunic, her raven hair to her shoulders no other details could be defined at this distance she was walking alone down the street staring into space. Her head turned slightly towards him and Nero made a move for a tree trunk. He had realised he had moved over so much trying to follow her movements he had moved into plain sight. At his move she turn directly towards his direction. She had seen him. Not only that but she was now moving towards him.

Nero turned and made fast pace through the wood. She couldn’t find him, she mustn’t know he was here, she mustn’t see him. Otherwise it was all over. He could hear her foot steps behind him and then her voice.

‘Hello, is someone there? Are you ok?’
Nero kept moving he could go straight to his home she might find it. He moved to one of the crypts and hid behind it. It was difficult to contort himself into a small enough shape. With his 6’7 frame it was difficult to fit into many spaces. He watched as she came into the graveyard. She was now closer and details were much easier to see. Her hair gleamed in the night a blue sheen to its raven length. Her eyes where the palest shade of blue he had seen they reminded him of a picture his mother had once shown him when he was very young of his father.

‘Is someone there? I know I saw something! This is silly Lilly you are talking to yourself in a graveyard of all places. You know you hate this place. It was probably a cat or something your imagination is running over time. Time to leave an go home, away from all the dead people whoa rent going to answer you back.’

Lilly, that name suited her. Like the delicate flower that held such a sent. Her skin was the shade of a Lilly pale and fragile. Nero watched as she left through the main gate at the other end of the graveyard. He made his way back home, moving the stone out of place he slid thought the gap and after replacing it moved further inside.

He had known from that moment she was to be guarded, that something that beautiful must be kept safe and cherished that some would take advantaged given half the chance. He had been right about that yet he had been there to take care of it. No one would hurt her again. No one. He would protect her with his life and that was that.

He heard her movements from his bed. The water was bubbling, so adding a tea bag to the water he removed it from the flame and let it cool slightly. With no electricity he had no where to store any perishables but evaporated milk was no problem finding a cup he poured the steaming liquid into it and added some milk. Going to the curtain he peeled it back slightly and saw her eyes open suddenly and her head turn to him.

Then she screamed.
