Chapter Two:
The Visitors
“When are we going to find timber wolves!?” Teri (the blonde) shouted.
“Shut the fuck up, you are going to scare them off stupid-ass,” Danny snapped. He cut through the thick undergrowth with his knife.
“Shit, goddamn-it,” Teri snapped, “I stepped in animal waste.”
“It looks like the feces of wolves, they should be close.”
Sent from home to study wolves, Teri and Danny were doing a documentary on them, carrying video equipment, food, some weapons and other camping materials. They looked on the ground. Wolf prints…but beside them…something that look strange.
“Look at these wolf prints…but these footprints…they look like a human’s.”
“Could be the local residence walking through here.”
“The foot prints have sharp ends—so they have claws.”
They began to set up camp.
Skylight dragged the kill to her offspring and Coral’s sisters.
*I ate my full* Coral barked.
*Shut it Coral, humans are a foot* Ratio warned by baring his teeth.
Moonstone glanced towards Ratio, *Coral is one of them. Maybe she can communicate with them*
Coral protested.
Moonstone gave a small sigh—or what looked like a sigh. *Just observe them…we don’t want anything happening to Skylight like last time*
Coral nodded and scampered off into the forest, following the scent of sun dried food and deodorant.
Coral climbed up the tree easily. She could crawl up a tall tree in less than a minute. She moved swiftly, walking on all fours and leaping down on branches. She walked on twos to dash on the ground and through the slippery muddy places. But she ran on fours when she was hunting, stalking and climbing. Breathing heavily from traveling such a long pace she saw them.
She could not understand what they were saying. Her pointed ears could hear them well, but of course…
She didn’t really know them. They looked like her and in her heart she knew she couldn’t be one of those wolves. She crawled on the ground, snarling slightly. Then the new smell that caressed the air filled the air.
*Meat* She said, panting, drool dripping from her tongue. The blonde one was unwrapping beef jerky. She needed to have some to keep her energy going, plus it probably tasted good.
Coral began to push through the scrubs, thinking off wrapping her lips around the burgundy red beef jerky and swallowing it whole.
“Hey,” Teri called out, “What the fuck is that in the bushes!”
“Shoot it!” Danny shouted. Coral pried through the bushes and stepped out in plain sight. Her eyes gazed upon the men, much taller than her (for she was on all fours), and staring down at her. If she had a tail she would curl it slightly and wag it to show she was being friendly. She held out her hands, bending her knees and panting, opening her mouth wide to show she wanted some of the beef jerky.
“Dude, I think she wants some of what you are eating.”
He broke a piece and threw it at Coral. Coral tore at it ravenously; her lips pursed around the jerky and then swallowed it whole without even chewing it.
Suddenly, there was a howl—it was far away. Coral turned her head to the direction of the howl. She took a deep breath and let out a guttural howl from her belly and then it became high pitched when it escaped through her throat. Though it wasn’t a perfect mimic, it sounded a lot like a wolf’s howl. Coral then dashed off into the bushes.
“Holy shit!” Teri whispered. “She may know where the wolves are! Girl, wait, wait!” He shouted.
Coral wasted no time in getting back to the pack, looking over her shoulders to see if they were following her. In fact, they were, but at a distance. She leaped over a small chasm and then scampered into the south part of the forest and saw one of the males in the pack. She tackled them playfully, biting gently at his fur.
*Otto, I missed you* She shouted, twisting her foot in his gut. Otto howled and then gave out a laugh. He began to lick her as Coral hugged him and licked him back, tossing and tackling on and over him, switch positions in their play fight.
Teri and Danny saw her at a distance.
“Amazing,” Danny said with awe. Coral was interacting with the wolves like if she was one.
When the wolves were asleep, whispers and peeps woke already restless Coral. She was in a light sleep and she decided to follow the whispers and the peeps.
“Ch, Ch, Ch,” Danny said waving a piece of meat to Coral. Like a moth to a flame, she was drawn to the meat. Teri was filming.
“We found wolves, but we didn’t expect to find this. A feral child—she looks like she is either 16 or 17, adolescent ages. She is lean but muscular, probably from all the running, climbing and hunting she had to do in the pack. She can walk on two legs, but she usually walks on all fours. She has no culture at all—she is a savage it seems. She can’t talk but instead barks and yelps.”
Coral snapped the meat away from Danny with her strong jaws and swallowed it.
“She has taken on the likeness of the wolves. She does not chew her food, instead she swallows it whole. She is very trusting it seems. Since this is no place for a human, we shall be taking her out of the forest and into real civilization.”
Coral cocked her head to the side and wiggled her hips (trying to wag her imaginary tale) and her ears began to point up.
“She is dressed in furs, very revealing and such. She must have used the furs as a way to keep warm during the winters. They are gray, so she used furs of the passed away wolves.”
He stopped filming.
“Come here,” he said.
Coral did not understand him.
“Come here,” Teri said, using a gesture. He turned to Danny, “We can’t leave her here.”
“But—”
He reached foreword to grab Coral but she swiftly leaped back. She lunged out herself and bit him on the hand. Teri pushed back and became frustrated. Coral began to dart away. She was much too fast for them to keep up with her, plus she climbed trees far away from their reach.
“Stupid feral girl,” he muttered. Coral barked at them, baring her pointed teeth.
“Stun her,” Danny said taking out a tranquilization gun. He aimed and shot her. The dart pierced Coral’s forearm. At first she screeched and yelped, howling and alerting other wolves. But suddenly a vertigo sensation befell her. She felt so tired. She was on her two feet and she began to stumble as she fell out of the tree. She fell into the bushes.
Teri helped her up, lifting her up in his arms.
They were going back to their homes now.
