Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Lucas sighed as he helped his mother get into his truck. She had another doctor appointment with her new doctor and he wanted to go with her. She hadn’t put up too much of a fight since there wasn’t any school, but he had told her that he was going no matter what. She had finally given in and agreed to let him come with her. He had a few questions that he needed answered.
Arriving at the doctor’s office, Lucas stood there to study the building. He had heard through the town’s grapevine that the new doctor was actually Blake’s mom. She had opened a new clinic and was now taking new patients. Lucas’ aunt had immediately signed his mom up because of the way that her current doctor was treating her. Lucas just hoped that Dr. Kelton would be better.
The inside of the waiting room wasn’t packed like Lucas thought it would have been. There was a mom with her three little kids and there was an elderly couple that sat near the receptionist’s desk. But other than that, there was no one in the waiting room. There were multiple tvs on the walls that showed the news, soap operas, and other tv shows. It was actually nice and comfortable.
Lucas walked up to the receptionist and put in his mom’s name and accepted the paperwork that she handed him. He went and sat down in a chair next to his mom as he filled out the forms. Other than a few questions he had to ask his mom for, he had the forms filled out in less than ten minutes. As he walked up to the receptionist’s desk again, he noticed that his mom’s file was up next.
As Lucas made his way over to his mom, a nurse came to stand in the door way. “Mrs. Bonn” The nurse called out, holding his mom’s folder and looking around the waiting room. Lucas helped his mom up and headed to the nurse. She smiled at them and led them into an empty room. Without another word she turned and left the room, leaving the file on the counter.
After only twenty minutes of waiting, Lucas thought about driving his head in the wall, just out of sheer boredom. He had looked through the magazines that were provided in the room and he had thought over plays for the upcoming game, but now he was all out of ideas on what to do to keep him busy. But luckily he was saved, because the door opened, indicating that he would be able to focus on something other than the paint job on the walls.
Blake stepped into the room and stopped when he saw Lucas sitting there, in a chair looking like he was about to loose his mind to boredom. He collected himself and stepped further into the room and grabbed the file off of the counter. He looked over its information and then turned to Mrs. Bonn. “Mrs. Bonn, we’ll have to do some standard tests. Just your blood pressure and weight and some others. It should only take twenty minutes to a half an hour. We’ll get the results by tomorrow morning and then we’ll call to let you know.” Blake told her as he looked over the file one more time.
Lucas watched Blake as he moved to close the file and then to the door. But the door opened and that same nurse stuck her head in. “Blake, could you do her blood work and the other tests. We’re swamped out here and we got a lot more patients to do.” She told him and then shut the door behind her. Lucas looked back over at Blake and saw him glare at the already closed door. Lucas couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face as he saw how cute and childish Blake looked when he glared.
Blake sighed and put the gloves on and then took the needle and turned to Mrs. Bonn. She gave him a sweet smile as she held out her arm. Blake wrapped the band around her arm and then placed the needle at the elbow. It only took about two minutes to draw her blood and then put a band aid on it. After taking her blood pressure and her weight, Blake recorded them and then took the blood sample and the file out to the nurse’s station.
Lucas was wondering why he felt the impulse to just stare at Blake like there was no tomorrow. Sure, he was nice looking, but that didn’t warrant him to stare at the boy. Lucas’ thoughts stopped again as Blake stepped into the room. Blake smiled at his mother and helped her get down from the table. Blake showed them out of the ever ending maze to the waiting room. Just as Blake was turning to go back in, Lucas stopped him. “Um, Blake.” He stammered.
Blake turned around and watched as Lucas tried to compose himself. Blake wondered what exactly he was doing. This was the star of the football team, his dad’s star player, and here he was talking to him. What was this world coming to? “I was wondering if you, uh, I mean you don’t have to if you don’t want to, but ah...” Lucas trailed off, unsure what to say. Blake raised an eyebrow as if telling him to continue. “I was wondering if you wanted to, I don’t know, hang out and maybe go catch a movie sometime?” Lucas sounded unsure of himself.
Blake was shocked, that was plain to see to anyone who looked at him. Lucas couldn’t help the small blush that crept onto his cheeks as he realized what exactly he said. It had sounded like he was back in junior high and he was asking his crush out. But he saw a blush spread across Blake’s cheeks as he nodded his agreement. Lucas’ heart jumped with joy in the anticipation of seeing Blake again. “Are you free tonight?” He asked, hoping that Blake would say yes.
Blake gave Lucas a smile and nodded again, not trusting his voice. It would possibly come out as a squeak of enjoyment. “How about I pick you up around five and then we can decide on the movie and maybe we can grab something to eat afterward?” Lucas asked. Blake nodded again and watched as Lucas smiled at him and then headed out after his mother.
Lucas couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face as he hopped into the truck next to his mom. He started it up and pulled out of the parking lot. He looked over at his mom and saw that she was watching him with a smile on her face. Lucas tried to let go of the feeling he was having right now, but he just couldn’t. “He’s a nice boy.” His mother said with a smile as she turned her attention back to the street. Lucas smiled as he headed home.
The rest of the day seemed like one of the longest days in his life. It seemed like fate decided to drag the day on longer just to try and kill him. Blake sighed as he sat at home working on a story for his website when the phone rang. The phone had been ringing off the hook all day, so after the millionth time Blake had got himself to ignore the phone. “Blake honey, it’s for you.” His mother told him as she held out the phone to him.” Blake practically shot up out of his seat and ran to the phone.
“Hello?” He answered, hoping it was who prayed it was.
There was a deep breath heard over on the other side of the line. “Blake? This is Lucas, I was just wondering if you still wanted to go to the movie.” Lucas sounded hesitant as if he was unsure of Blake’s answer and was awaiting rejection. “No, it’s fine.” Blake answered, hoping to ease some of the wariness that seemed evident in the older boy’s voice. And Blake was rewarded with a sigh of relief on the other end. “I’ll be there in a little bit. I have to do some things first, but I’ll be at your house in maybe half an hour or so.” Lucas told him. “Sure.” Blake responded and then hung up the phone.
Blake told his mom what was going on and then proceeded to get ready. His mother had always been supportive of him and was always by his side. He had told her of his visit to Lucas’ house and how they had gotten along. He had almost burst of joy when he told her that Lucas had asked him if he had wanted to catch a movie that night. His father would have ranted up one side and down the other telling him that he would not get in the way of the championship by spending time with his star football player and getting him distracted. And then there was his brother.
His brother had come home from college and was trying to make Blake’s life a living hell. If it wasn’t for the fact that he helped his mom out at the clinic and his brother was busy with practice after school, it would be a living hell for him. Jason always seemed to get the better of him. And being his father’s star son didn’t help any. Jason would rant on and on about the sports he played while Blake would end up talking about an essay he wrote or a book he read in class. It just seemed like a never ending cycle.
But Blake was lucky. His dad and Jason had gone out of town for the weekend to stay with some old football buddies and work on strategies for upcoming games. Blake was thankfully able to go out with Lucas, and his mother wouldn’t tell a soul. After getting dressed he sat down on the couch and watched some tv while he waited for Lucas to show up. His heart leapt with excitement he hadn’t felt in a long while. This was just the break he needed, the fresh start on a new chapter of his life, which he hoped included Lucas Bonn.
