Chapter 2: The Unexpected

“How does it feel to know your life is slowly slipping away, Captain?” asked an amused Lady Lash. “Admit it. You never thought that you’d meet your end at our hands did you? I know, we might consider stopping if you crawl over here and kiss my boots!” she laughed.

The three women continued taunting Captain Ultra, but as seconds ticked away into minutes they began to sense something was wrong.

“What’s going on?” asked Conjure, slight alarm in her voice. “Why hasn’t he fallen yet?”

Lady Lash tightened the whips coiled around the superhero’s body even more. “I don’t know. The Nullifier Beam should’ve taken full effect by now. He should be lying on the pavement with smoke coming out of his ears.”

“He will fall!” declared Arista. “I’m not letting anything cheat me out of this victory.”

The truth was he had realized that his powers had remained intact well before they had. Their secret weapon had seemingly failed to work. Now all Captain Ultra had to do was fight through the pain and focus all his strength together. He closed his eyes, clenched his fists, and summoned every bit of energy he could gather. After a few moments, a vibrant blue aura flowed over him and surrounded his body, radiating noticeable heat.

“Th-that shouldn’t be possible!” Lady Lash stammered. She cast a worried glance over at her two cohorts. Still, she was determined not to let such an advantageous situation slip away and turned the current coursing through her two whips to full capacity. “Pour it on,” she urged. “We have to give it everything we’ve got!”

Conjure and Arista complied and doubled their efforts accordingly. The fiery haired sorceress interlocked her fingers together to strengthen the spell, hoping to keep his escape attempt at bay.

The light, blue energy crackled all around Captain Ultra as he built up a substantial charge. But he was weakening fast from the prolonged assault. A few more minutes and he would be out. He was only going to get one shot at this.

“I…can’t…hold him…” Conjure said through clenched teeth. Her outstretched arms began trembling from the sheer effort. The glowing ring that immobilized the Captain was starting to crack and fade as the sorceress’s spell weakened.

At the last moment, Ultra unleashed everything he had, sending a 360 degree tidal wave blast that sent his attackers hurtling backward, freeing him in the process. Captain Ultra fell to his knees, completely exhausted. He canvassed the surrounding area and saw Conjure and Lady Lash were lying several feet away. They were stirring slightly but appeared to be down for the moment. As he moved to stand, a stream of purple bolts slammed into him from behind, keeping him down. It felt like his back was on fire.

“Did you forget about me?” Arista asked, moving around to his front and keeping her sword trained carefully on him. “Certainly you didn’t think I would be defeated so easily. I don’t need some stupid mechanical device to win this battle. Besides, this way is so much more satisfying.”

Try as he might, Captain Ultra couldn’t manage to get to his feet. Worse yet, Lady Lash and Conjure had almost fully recovered and were preparing to strike again. He had to do something now-and fast.

“Don’t feel too bad, Captain” Arista mocked, confidently stepping even closer. “You’re simply learning a lesson that all the other would-be superheroes will know very shortly. The Sisterhood, and we women in particular, are far superior to you and your kind. You never stood a chance.” A sly smirk formed on her pretty face. “In fact, I think I like you in this position- kneeling before me. A woman could get used to that.”

“Know what…you’re problem…always was, Arista?” Captain Ultra strained, willing his arm to move. He quickly grabbed the end of the sword and sent an energy charge straight up the shimmering blade. “You talk too damn much!”

The villainess’ eyes widened as the two opposing energies reacted with each other. There was a blinding flash followed by the sound of Arista violently slamming into the side of the building behind her. She fell unceremoniously to the pavement, leaving a shallow imprint of her body in the brick wall above. Lady Lash and Conjure raced over and helped her up. Fortunately she still seemed dazed from the impact.

“We already got what we came here for. Let’s get out of here, Conjure!” Lady Lash shouted. She then turned to the Sentinel of Justice, narrowing her icy blue eyes. “This isn’t even close to being over. Your dumb luck won’t save you next time. ”

Conjure raised both arms in the air and recited an incantation in a strange sounding language. The small dragon shaped pendant around her neck lit up in response and a swirling, green mist materialized, enveloping the trio completely. It was like pea soup and impossible to see through. When it dissipated moments later, they were gone.

Captain Ultra rested for a bit to gather himself. His invulnerability, strength, and flight were constant, but they were only boosted to their full levels by his energy powers. And they required recharging if over exerted like he had just done.

He inwardly breathed a slight sigh of relief. This was one of the closest calls he had ever had, and it might have been his last if their Nullifier Beam had worked or if they had decided to continue the attack. Three of his most powerful enemies had done something unprecedented today by joining forces. Individually Arista, Lady Lash, and Conjure were genuine threats, wielding immense power, but together they were that much more dangerous. Another thing that had bothered Captain Ultra was this “Sisterhood” Arista kept referring to. It was the first he had heard of it. Was it simply the three of them or were there others involved he wondered.

Nevertheless he would face down this new threat as he had all the others before it. The sun was starting to set as he launched skyward heading east out of the city. He needed to find out more and he knew exactly who to go to for some answers.
