I Don't Belong

Important Author’s Note at the Bottom
_________________
It was another beautiful, bright, sunny Thursday in Paris. Birds were singing, flowers were blooming, and one small French woman, dressed in blue and white flannel pajamas, was cursing at the sun from beneath a sea of sheets as its rays hit her through a window. Still groggy, she rolled -literally- out of her comfortable bed, and let her feet touch the cold floor. She dragged her sleeping body to the window and flipped off the giant star in the sky as a sign of defiance. Yawning, she peered at her reflection from the glass. She looked like crap and that was putting it nicely. As she sauntered towards the door of her room she glanced at the small digital clock resting on her nightstand for the time.

8:50 a.m.

The petite woman blinked twice before realizing what she promised to do today. She was supposed to pick up Alex and her brother in 10 minutes and she was nowhere near ready. She rushed to the bathroom and, after an uncomfortable hot shower and almost killing herself on the tile floor in the bathroom, ran back into the room only donning a towel. Her mother called and left a message on the answering machine saying that she had cancelled the breakfast with Alex and to just bring the two photographers to the church. May also informed Alex of the change of plans and told her in advanced. She quickly decided on wearing on a pink shirt and a black skirt as her attire before sprinting down the stairs, putting on a pair of black sandals and out of the door with only one thing in mind:

I’m so late!!

Chapter Title from the Yellowcard song "City of Devils"

I Don’t Belong

Across town, Sage and Alex were getting ready for their meeting with Jodi in their hotel room.

Or at least Sage was.

Alex, on the other hand, was still in her bed, unaware of the promise she made the night before. Her brother, seated in the chair by the window, sighed at his sister’s sleeping form and glanced at hotel room clock. Her new friend and employer should be here any minute and she’s still sleeping. With another sigh he rose from his chair and stood over his sister’s sleeping body.

Well I’ve lived a good life.

And with that thought he yanked the covers off her body. The sleeping blonde immediately woke up, agitated, due to the lack of “weight” on her and groggily stared at her “traitorous” brother.

“Whydiyoudat,” she asked in a slurred sleepy voice. He pointed to the clock and replied, “Isn’t our new client supposed to be coming here any minute now?” Alex looked at the clock and then at Sage, then at the clock again before rolling out of bed, cursing with every move she made, and moving towards the small hotel bathroom by the front door.

After stepping out of her pajamas and stepping into the small shower, she allowed the scorching water run over her tired body. It was slowly doing its job, waking her up with every minute more she spent in the steamy room. She heard the small creak of the door open and saw her brother’s large frame move into the room through the steam.
“So why are we doing this again?” The older sibling peered out from behind the shower curtain and into the shower-induced fog to see her brother sitting patiently on the toilet seat, his head resting on the palm of his hand.

“Umm, spur of the moment,” she answered sheepishly before disappearing behind the curtain.
“Only one problem,” he said as he walked towards the shower, stuck his hand through the curtain and tapped her head lightly, “We don’t have any equipment!”
In return she took a damp towel and smacked him while asking, sarcastically, “Who’s the idiot who’s supposed to be taking pictures for a travel agency?”

He opened his mouth in a retort before shutting it and turning towards his sister’s grinning face. “I hate you,” he told her with fake malice before pressing the lever for the toilet. Sadly for Sage, Alex had already turned off the pipes and was preparing to get out of the shower. She wrapped the towel around her body and exited the bathroom. Her brother sighed washed his hands in the faucet and followed her out. He was shocked and at the same time not to see her fully dressed. She decided to wear a simple black and blue striped shirt and a pair of black jeans.

“How do you do that,” he asked wondering if he could finally answer the mystery.
“Secret,” she told him while grinning and waggling her finger towards him. Before anyone could say another word there was a knock at the door and Alex motioned Sage to open the door.
He shrugged and walked over to open the door. When he did open the door, he looked down and came face to face with a small Asian woman who stared at Sage, looking a little puzzled. She remembered Alex being tall but not this tall. The person in front of her was at least 5”10’ and wore a simple gray shirt and jeans with black sneakers.

“Alex?” Sage shook his head and thumbed her in the direction of the beds.

“Nope, she’s back there.”

Before he could even move to let her in, Alex was next to him with a smile on her face. “Hey Jodi, glad you came.” Jodi heard the greeting but still looking at the two blonds. It was like looking at carbon copies: same eyes, same hair, and at the moment, the same confused expression directed at the soon-to-be wed woman. The blond to her right, Sage waved his hand in front of her face and snapped his fingers. “Is anyone home?” Jodi snapped out of her daze and blushed in embarrassment. “I’m sorry for staring but Alex, you didn’t tell me you had a twin.”

“I don’t have a twin. Jodi, this is my brother Sage. Sage, this is Jodi, our new employer,” the two shook hands and exchanged greetings.
“She’s going to drive us to where the marriage is supposed to take place. Why don’t you come in? I still have to do a couple of things before we leave.”

Before she knew it, Jodi was inside the fancy hotel room. The room itself was small and yet held that cozy feeling. Painted a pale green color the room and it was furnished with two twin sized beds, a small table and a moveable chair positioned next to the window. Five suitcases also occupied the room but they were scattered around. The brunette sat down on the nearest bed, Alex’s bed, and noticed the softness of the bed. Alex was already sitting on the chair by the window, writing notes on a small pad she produced from one of the suitcases. Sage shut the door and went over to the coffee pot which was perched on top of one of the suitcases.

“Would you like some coffee,” asked Sage.
“Thank you...” but before she could say anything else a loud grumble, courtesy of Jodi’s stomach echoed into the room, embarrassing herself to the point that her face could be mistaken for a tomato. The blonde woman at the window laughed, watching her employer shift her body in awkwardness.
“Didn’t have breakfast I see? Well then that makes three of us,” stated Alex, “How about we ditch the coffee and call room service for some breakfast?”

“I don’t want to impose,” Jodi said in protest.

“Nonsense. It’ll be fine. We were going to order breakfast anyway. Toss me the phone Sage,” said Alex. Sage sat on his bed and threw the cordless phone to his sister. She caught the phone and talked to front desk for the next half a minute before hanging up.

“So Alex,” Jodi turned to the doctor and smiled, “How long are you and your brother staying in lovely Paris?”

“Umm.. We might leave next Thursday. It all depends if we decide to stay longer.”

“That’s good. Hey! Maybe after we get everything set for the wedding, I could give you a little tour of the city.”

“That be great but aren’t you going to be busy with getting the dress and other things?”

“That’s okay. I’ve done all of those things already so this is my relax time before the big day.”

“Okay, if you really want to,” said Alex warily.

Now it was Jodi’s turn to reassure her friend. “It’ll be fine!”

Before anyone could say anything else, someone banged on the door and screamed “room service” to the room’s occupants. Sage got up and let the maid in. She drove a cart filled with bread and pastries. The maid bowed and left the room as the three started calling dibs on the fruity delights. While eating, the trio talked about world events and what not before Sage checked his watch. “Shouldn’t we be on our way?” The women looked at their own watches and saw that it was almost eleven. “He’s right. But first let me put on my shoes,” replied Alex as she stood up. She dragged a pair of white tennis shoes from under the bed and placed them on her feet.
“Ready to go,” Jodi asked the two vacationers who nodded. Sage followed the brunette out the room and Alex locked the door behind her. The three filed out of the building towards the parking lot. They entered Jodi’s small car with Sage riding shotgun and Alex sitting, or more precise laying, in the backseat. The car roared to life before speeding out of the lot and onto the streets of Paris.

“So Jodi where are you and your loved one getting married,” asked the blond sitting next to her. “A small church I’ve went to since I was little. It’s so beautiful and almost overlooks the city. Raul loved it as well.” The rest of the ride to the church was quiet as the bride to be concentrated on where she was going and the two Martin’s concentrated on the city’s scenery.

Once the car arrived at its destination and the three filed out of it, they stared in awe at the church’s courtyard. It was huge. The church itself looked like any normal church painted a grayish color. The trio was walking towards the building when a small old woman collided into Jodi.

“Forgive me child,” started the white haired and wrinkled woman who grabbed Jodi’s hand to balance herself, “I did not see where…” Her apology was cut short when she saw the two Martin siblings staring from behind Jodi.

“The Devil’s children are here,” croaked the gypsy squeezing Jodi’s hand, staring at the smaller woman with wild eyes. She was pointing towards Alex and Sage who were looking at each other puzzled, “And they will cause you nothing but pain and death!”
The gypsy stared at the two “devil children” and saw that they were staring oddly at her. Before she could do anything a flood of pain and despair entered the gypsy’s mind causing her to release Jodi’s hand and curl into a fetal position on the hard concrete. The brunette looked on in shock as the woman started to spasm on the floor. Alex was the first one to react. The blonde rushed to the woman’s side and examined her.

“Shit, she’s having a seizure. Jodi! Call an ambulance!” The woman nodded and called on her cell phone. Six minutes later, the sound of sirens were heard at the holy building. The woman placed on a stretcher, still shaking, and hauled away by paramedics. “Man, that was weird,” commented Sage. The two females nodded and entered the church only to have a man in holy garments rushed up to them and hug Jodi.

“Ah! My little Jodi, how are you,” asked the priest. “I’m fine Thomas. Oh, Alex, Sage, this is the man who’ll be conducting the service, Father Thomas. Thomas, these will be my photographers for that day.” The man greeted the two. “Father,” asked Sage, “Might we look around the church? We just want to find out where we should set up the cameras.”
“Be my guest. And please call me Tom” As soon as the man gave the approval, the two Americans were already near the altar, bickering on which camera should go where like little kids. Jodi and the priest sat in a pew and watched the photographers analyzed the church.

“Tom,” asked the small Asian, “What would you think of me if decided to leave Raul at the altar?”
Thomas blinked twice before staring at the woman. She was a few days shy of getting married and she was already thinking of running off. “Why do you ask that?”
“Well. It’s just that sometimes I don’t think that he loves me. He tells me that he does but his actions say something else. Because of him not showing up when he said he would I was almost raped.”
“Almost!?”
Jodi nodded and looked at the older Martin who had Sage in a headlock. “Alex saved me and brought me home. And then after a whole series of weird events is now taping my wedding.”

The priest laid a hand on the woman’s shoulder and smiled. “Jodi,” he started, “I’ve known you for most of my life as a holy man. You were always known for making decisions that were spontaneous and in some strange way always the right ones to make. Whatever choices you make, just remember: I will always stand behind you.”
Jodi smiled at the man’s comforting words and hugged him just as her photographers came back. “So do you think you can work in here,” asked their benefactor. “Well if we fix a few things and hopefully it is sunny that day, then the shots will come out very good,” replied Sage while rubbing his neck.
“So are you guys ready to go?”
“Pretty much. Father Thomas, we’ll see you in five days.”

The trio walked out while the father waved goodbye. The jumped into the car and drove aimlessly around the city until Jodi looked at her companions and asked, “Should we go and eat? I know of this great seafood restaurant.” She heard a collective agreement and turned the car around. The car stopped two blocks later in front of a small building and a valet ran up to them. The trio got out of the car and walked inside of the building. The whole area was decorated in velvet red and wood. The hostess greeted them and sat them in a booth at a far corner of the room. The two siblings sat on one side of the booth while Jodi sat on the other side. A waiter came out of a door, walked to their table and took their orders before disappearing behind a door that led to the kitchen.

The brunette placed her elbows on the table and rested her head on her folded hands.
“So I know you two are from America but where,” she asked the two.
“Oh, we live in Louisiana. Near the French Quarter. Basically Party city,” replied Alex as she started dancing in her seat causing Jodi to laugh. Sage shoved his older sibling who looked at him and shrugged.

“You know what we do for a living but what do you do as a career,” asked Sage.
“I’m an English teacher at a small American high school.”
Alex’s face brightened amid the dark room and she looked back at her brother “Oh man, if we brought her back Jorge would love us.” Sage nodded and laughed.
“He’s a friend of ours and a principal of a high school,” said Sage, “that has a reputation of going through English teachers like water.”
Jodi laughed, “I’m sorry but I’m going to have to decline the offer.”
Alex sucked her teeth in fake sadness, “It was worth a try.”
The waiter came back with the appetizers which the three, mostly Sage, ate them in delight. A few minutes later the same waiter came back with their orders and the rest of lunch went without a hitch until...

“So how did you meet your fiancée Jodi?” Jodi put down her water and almost had a dreamy expression on her face, “I met him at an art gallery. We were arguing over a picture and next thing you know I was in a bar with him. He was very romantic back then but now…”
The two looked at her with concern when they heard that ‘but’ for that was not suppose to be coming out of a person who was soon to be married.
“Now I feel that he’s hiding things from me. I know it seems silly.”
Sage just brushed off her apprehension and comforted her, “Not at all. He might just be very nervous so he won’t spend a lot of time with you,” he paused to take a bite of his food, “Believe me I know, I’ve been doing this for a long time.”
The rest of lunch was in silence before desert came. By the time they were leaving the restaurant, bill split between the three, they were all talking and laughing once again. After another car ride, Jodi dropped the two off the hotel and said their farewells as she drove home.

The two silently walked into the hotel, greeting the staff before getting on the elevator and waiting as it ascended to their floor.
“I do not like this guy,” said Alex, breaking the quiet in the small box. “He’s doing something behind her back.” The elevator ‘binged’ and the two stepped onto the carpeted hallway and walked towards their door. “And what are going to do about it? Tail him,” asked Sage. Alex chuckled and unlocked their door. “I swear it’s like you live in my mind.”
The taller blonde sighed and walked into the room, the shorter blonde following him and closing the door behind her. Sage sat on his bed and stared out the window as Alex started rummaging in his suitcase. “What are you doing in my suitcase?”
“Looking for the camera.”
“Going to do a little recon?”
“Yup. Going to tail him and then see what he’s really doing when he’s away.” Sage just stared and sighed, “Just don’t damage the camera. It is very old.”
“Yeah I’ll be fine with the old, mashed up Polaroid camera that should be crushed,” she laughed as she disappeared into the bathroom.

The next three days were pretty uneventful. During the day Jodi took Alex out and showed her the sights and scenes of Paris. Sage was busy looking for photography stores and buying the cameras and lights they would need. In the evening, the three drove to the church for the ceremony rehearsal. Alex noted that both times Raul wasn’t there and would call Jodi saying that work kept him back. She found out from the brunette that he worked as an analyst in some corporation. And that was where she was now, dressed in green long sleeved shirt, black slacks and a black trilby hat, standing in the darkness of the night. She was about to head to a bakery to get food when he exited the building and started walking down the block.

The blonde kept at least a half a block in between herself and the subject. A couple blocks later and he entered a club which had “La Lune” in large blue neon letters. Not look suspicious she waited twenty minutes before approaching the club.
She walked to La Lune and showed her ID to the bouncer who let her into the noisy club. Through the thick smoke the blonde saw Raul hanging out with a bunch of people on a couch. Alex sat on an adjacent couch and pulled down her hat so it covered her face. The groom sat in the middle with two men on each side of him and a young girl on his lap.

“So you’re gonna be a married man again,” she heard the bald man next to him ask. Raul laughed before taking another sip of his drink and fondling the girl’s breast through her shirt.
“Yeah and six months later I’m out with most of her money. Like always.”
The girl on his lap laughed and kissed him passionately. “This will be the last sucker, right Antoine?”
Antoine? What the…
“Yup”
“And then we can finally leave this place and head back to Beverly Hills,” replied the man with the crew cut.
Disgusted and angry at what they were planning to do, Alex got up and took an undetected picture of the group just as ‘Raul’ and the girl kissed again. She walked to the bar, waving back and forth the snapshot of the scene, sat at a stool and ordered the strongest thing they had. As soon as the glass landed on the wood counter the blonde grabbed it and downed its contents. She turned on her seat, back to the crowd, mainly looking at Raul’s group. Raul looked over to her and his face paled as Alex waved two fingers in salutation. She hopped off the stool, shoved the developed picture in her pocket, and headed to the exit just as he murmured something to his group and got up and followed Alex out the door.

Not even at the end of the block Alex felt his hand on her shoulder. She slowly turned around, a look of annoyance on her face. ‘Raul’ laughed and put the nicest smile on his mouth. “Hey! You! Umm... ‘Alexia’ was it?”
“Just Alex,” she was now more annoyed that he couldn’t even remember a simple name, “What do you want?”
He gave a fake laugh and nervously asked, “Did you see anything in there?”
“Nope. Just you sucking the face of that girl.” Her eyes narrowed towards the slightly shorter man.
“Well do me a favor, you didn’t see anything.” He passed her a bill which she crumbled and threw it in the streets.
“I don’t need your stinking money. I saw what I saw,” she said with disgust before walking away. ‘Raul’s’ company came outside and stared at the disappearing figure. He just curled his lip into a snarl and barked one command to the others.

“Take her out.”

Alex turned down a large alleyway between the bar and another store. She was walking not noticing a black car speeding behind her. She turned at the last second before all two tons of the car slammed into her. Her body crashed into the window pane and rolled off the car, landing onto the ground unmoving. Raul and his cohorts got out of the car and gathered around the body. The girl bent down and checked the blonde’s pulse and let go.
“Dead.”
Raul, his snarl now a smirk, said to the two men, “We need to get rid of her body.” The two men grabbed her body and threw it into a near by garbage can before they all climbed into the car and zoomed away from the club.

“Now nothing can ruin the plan.”
