Chapter I
Disclaimer in first entry.
He just kept droning on and on. The girl sat there, slowly slouching a bit further into her seet, and let out a brief sigh under her breath. Is he ever going to shut up? Her stomach, despite her not wishing it to, twisted a little, rumbling to remind her that she hadn't eaten breakfast this morning. Damnable doctor's appointment and the need for new shots because she was a transfer student.
~
Karen sunk low in her seat, slouching and looking for all the world as if she was going to slide out of the thing in sheer boredom. The secretary probably wouldn't have put it past her. Her eyes were upturned, staring at the ceiling, and each arm hung over the arm rests... that sheer fact being the primary reason why she was still seated, instead of on the floor. Her legs were stretched out in front of her, crossed at the ankles and doing little to support her. Mostly, she just looked as if she were slowly going braindead.
Fucking idiot. She actually turned her head just enough to glance at the door. He was such a blowhard. Always loved to hear himself talk. Half of the time she attempted to avoid too much trouble for the desire to not be tortured by his unending blathering. The other half of the time she just conveniently turned her mind off, letting his babble go unheard as she zoned completely and utterly out. One time, she recalled in amusement, she'd actually fallen asleep with her eyes open. However, this particular incidence was starting to get on her nerves. She'd given him an extra bit of time, agreeing with a time to meet him much earlier than she'd expected. She'd even shown up ten minutes late. No, now he was going well over what she'd thought possible for just a new student, and as she waited impatiently for the person she was supposed to show around to be done wiht him, she suspected that he very well might cut into that all-important time of the day called 'lunch.'
".. and I do sincerely hope that you will enjoy your time here, Miss Fletcher. I'm sure you'll fit right in..." Karen looked up, sliding back into a fully seated position as she turned to regard the person finally walking out of his door. From the glazed look in the girl's eyes, she was either overwhelmed by his insessant talk, or actually nervous about her first day. Those glazed eyes, though, were a striking, deep, dark blue-hazel, and brought an unbidden smirk to Karen's lips.
The girl, as she nodded one last time and shut the door, with an relieved sigh that amused Karen no end, finally turned to her and let those striking eyes refocus, and let Karen get a good look at her. Long, black-brown hair fell in slightly waving tresses down past her shoulders, just to the very tips of her shoulder blades, and framed an almost exotic face. Neatly groomed eyebrows, arching in a beautiful bow, topped her now sparkling eyes, and one rose high in an odd expression at Karen. Her nose, petite and perky, was rather cute, with high, elegant cheek-bones and full, but not too big, lips. Her jaw even came to a distinctly feminine curve-point. Her neck was almost swan-like, but not gawky or long, and led into slender but strong shoulders, and a thin, athletic body. She was on the shorter side of average, Karen supposed, looking her up and down purposefully, a calculating expression on her own face as she made it obvious that she was attempting to get a decent look-over to see what she was dealing with. The clothes were simple, but well styled, and fashionable. Her make-up skill, what there was to see of it, and the particular fashion of clothing led to a conclusion that Karen almost be-grudged. Preppy, cute... probably a cheerleader.
"Hey." Karen stood, gracefully rising to her taller hight like a cat, her manner almost predatory. It brought a shy smile to the other girl's lips, and a more mischievous smirk to her own. "You must be..."
"Lorelei. Well, Lori really. Mr. I-Like-To-Talk said your name is Karen?"
"Yeah. C'm'on, let's get this goin." Karen turned and moved out of the office, still with that smirk on her face. "Anyway. Yeah, first floor, it's mostly science type of stuff. Yanno, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc. They're all alarm-blaring fire-escape things, but there's a door outside for each of the Chem labs. Safer that way, incase of a big kaboom. Other'n that we've got the Auditorium slash Student Commons, Caf, and offices on the ground floor. Well, yeah, Nurse with the Offices too, but what school doesn't have it like that? Oh, yeah, and the Choir, Theater, and Band rooms are along the same bit of hall that the Commons is." She pointed out the important places, namely the Cafeteria and Commons, as they walked, then began to trudge up the stairs. "Second floor is the first level of the library, surrounded by Mathematics and Language Arts classes. Aka, stuff like Algebra, Calc, Languages, and English Lit are on this floor. Couple random elective type classes too, but not many. Mostly stuff that goes with those categories. From here, you can get to the third floor with the normal stairways, or the ones in the library. Third floor up there is the second level of the library, accessable by the stairs in the library, or two sets of double doors up there. We've also got all of the computer labs and stuff like that up there, the tech type things, and two elevators, one on either end of the building, that go to all four levels, so that the stuff that needs'a be wheeled about can get places. There's also most of the other electives up there too. They keep it pretty cold up there, year round, so that the machines don't overheat and explode. Basement is arts classes, anything from Improv to Studio to Composition to the abstract. Outside are the sports fields, track, etc., connected to the three Gymnasiums and according classes, like health and such, in the second, smaller building. The Yard, as well call it, or the front grassy area of the school, is free for occupation by any and all students at any time. You can go there, the Caf, the Commons, or the Computer Labs if you have a free."
Karen stopped in front of a librarian, having led the new girl into that part of the building, and handed over Lori's schedule. It took a few moments, but the books needed were provided, at least two fresh and new, still wrapped in plastic. "Big school..."
"Yeah, it is." Karen grinned and snorted, taking half of the stack and looking again at the schedule, walking out again to find the girl's locker. "We'll get these thrown into your locker, let'em collect some dust and be real high-school text books. Lunch bell should ring soon."
"2037, 2039, 2041... ah, 2043, here ya go." Karen nodded to a locker, handing the paper back to the other girl as Lori set her half of the books down. It took more than one try, but the girl did get the locker to open... mostly having trouble because it kept sticking. Karen just smirked again, checked over the schedule, and threw one of the better used books into the girl's bag before shoving the rest into a locker. "Okay, yeah, well that's pretty much the tour. Simple and organized as this place is, it's pretty easy to find things once you get the hang of it. We go on an A/B day basis, half of the classes one day, half the next, and we're on a B day today. That'll be the second column of your schedule there."
"Um..." Lori looked around, pausing in her question. "Where are..." She was cut off abruptly as the bell rang loudly, shrill in their ears and startling the girl. In mere seconds the hallway was flooded with students, and the question died on her lips. "... nevermind."
"Hey, Karen, who's the fresh meat?"...
TBC
Author's Note Okay, that's the first bit of the story. It's a work in progress, so there is, of course, more to come. I think I'll start the next chapter off from Lori's point of view though, give her a bit of the spotlight *winks and smirks mischievously, as I already know exactly where this is going.*
Anyway, feed the ego-monster, it needs cookies. If ya like it, tell me. If ya don't, well, I don't like flaming, but will accept constructive criticism.
As well, any character ideas you may have, for the typical jock, cheerleader, or other stereotype, can be submitted via review. If I like them, I might use them, and give a note of credit and appraise to the idea-person.
