Dependable Jack

She didn’t remember the walk to Jack’s apartment, or the greeting of the doorman and the bellhop as he punched in the number for Jack’s penthouse suit. All Sam really knew is that her nightmare seemed to have extended itself when a stunning blonde answered Jack’s door.

The woman was 5’10” and the kind of natural blonde that women all over the world paid good money to emulate day in and day out. A good chunk of her height was her shapely legs, and between that and her perfect, firm breasts it was enough to give even someone as good looking as Sam was a complex.

“Hello.” She smiled brightly and Sam seriously considered just crawling away and sleeping in Central Park with the hopes that someone would kill her before the sun came up. “Can I help you?”

“Who is it, Shimi?” Jack came up behind the blonde goddess, his hair damp and a pair of faded jeans hanging low off his hips. “Sam! You’re early. I’m really sorry, Shimi here just popped in on me without any warning, can we postpone movie night?” He suddenly realized Sam was not only still in her uniform, but that her face was streaked with tears. “Baby,” he stepped forward and drew her in as his friend stepped back, “Samantha, what’s going on?”

To Sam’s horror she lost what little composure she’d gathered on the way over and was soon sobbing the story against Jack’s bare chest. He didn’t seem bothered by it, and held her close as he stroked her hair. She finally burned herself out, and feeling extremely sheepish took a step back to wipe her face.

“I’m sorry, it’s just the…shock.” She mustered up a smile. “I apologize for the interruption. I’ll go get myself a hotel room and let you get back to your evening.”

Jack didn’t have a chance to even open his mouth before Shimi had stepped forward and wrapped a comforting arm around Sam’s shoulders. “Nonsense. Jack has plenty of room here, there’s no reason for you to stay anywhere else.” She smiled at Sam softly. “You’re not interrupting, Sam. Let’s get you cleaned up.” Shimi steered Sam toward the guest bedroom. “Close the door, Jack,” she ordered over her left shoulder, “and go keep an eye on the sauce.”

Shimi rejoined him in the kitchen a few moments later and smiled at her old friend as she lifted her glass of Cabernet to lips that were painted as dark as the wine. “She is lovely, poor thing.”

“I didn’t like that guy from the start.” Jack’s voice was tight as he chopped vegetables with a large knife. “You know what I should do is go over there and cut his black heart out with this.”

Shimi bit back a laugh. “Jack, darling, don’t wave the knife around. Besides,” she sipped at her wine, “killing him only gets you in trouble. Don’t fret about it for now, there are plenty of ways to get back at bastards like that.” She crossed to him and kissed his neck. “He didn’t leave her any clothes in that bag. So instead of making her put on her old stuff I gave her some of your clothes.” Shimi tried not to smile as she felt his back tense under her hand.

“Lakshimi, what are you playing at?” He only used her full name when he was extremely suspicious or angry at her. The first happened often, the second was much more rare given Jack’s laid back temperament.

Now she did laugh and slid a hand forward over the bulge in his jeans. “That treasure of yours isn\'t from me this time, sweetie. So don’t try to pretend like this isn’t the perfect opportunity.”

He turned to face her, thankfully remembering to put the knife down first, and Jack’s green eyes were dark. “I’m not going to take advantage of her, Shimi, her boyfriend just dropped the biggest bombshell of her life. Sam never breaks down like that – ever.”

Shimi patted his cheek. “Don’t worry, Jack. Trust me, you won’t be taking advantage of her. Ack! The sauce.” The hissing noise distracted her and Shimi turned quickly to the stove to rescue her boiling pot of spaghetti sauce.
