Selflessness

Marisa was laying down again, tears silently coursing down her cheeks. Tyler had left her room after an hour or so; supposedly the doctor wanted him back in his own so the burn on Tyler’s cheek could be looked over. If it wasn’t too serious, he would be let out in a few hours. Marisa supposed she would be going with him, after all, she only had this stupid headache. But… where would she go, if.... she couldn’t stay with Amanda?

She suddenly heard a soft knock on the door, accompanied by a deep masculine voice asking permission to come in. She said \"Yes\" weakly, and saw a man who whose white coat signified him as a doctor enter. He was extremely tall, with a friendly face that showed a hint of sorrow and sympathy. He walked over to her bedside, and shook Marisa’s hand. “Ah... I see our sleeper has finally woken up,” he kidded with a smile. “I’m Dr. Fimmel, I’ve been taking care of you for the past three days.”

At the mention of how long she had been in the hospital, she winced, which didn’t help her pounding head. “Three… days?” She couldn’t believe she had been here that long. “How? Why?” She asked the questions in her same, weak voice, one that disproved her idea that she was fine and didn’t need to be here.

“Pounding headache?” The doctor asked. “Disoriented? Sensitive to light? Dizzy? Nauseas?” She nodded yes to all his questions, which only made her head hurt worse.

“That’s not a migraine, my dear,” he said, seeing her confusion. “You have a concussion, and a bad one. The car that hit yours hit the passenger side. If you hadn’t been wearing your seatbelt, you might have actually flown through the window. Instead, your head slammed into the window, causing it to shatter. You stayed in the car.”

Marisa’s eyes widened as she heard what really was wrong with her, and what had happened. She looked up at the Doctor when he began to speak again. “Tyler told me he gave you the news about Amanda. I am truly, truly sorry for your loss. She was killed on impact… we had no chance to save her. I wish there could have been a different ending to the story, I really do.”

Marisa started to cry softly, and the doctor looked at her with sympathy, and handed her a Kleenex. “Marisa… I don’t know if you understand how close you were to sharing Amanda’s fate. Tyler would never tell you himself, but I do feel you have a right to know.\" Marisa looked at the doctor, confused. What hadn\'t Tyler told her? The doctor took a deep breath, and his face took on a guilty expession, as if by saying this he was going against someones wishes.

\"Tyler was uninjured during the crash.” Marisa then looked at the doctor like he was mad- Tyler had a broken arm and a burn on his cheek! Did the doctor really think that counted as ‘uninjured?!’

As if he was reading her mind, Dr. Fimmel continued. “Yes, Marisa, his arm is really broken, and his cheek is truly burnt. aHe broke his arm trying to bend metal to get Amanda out of the car, to no avail. His cheek was burned, however, while he reached into the burning car and pulled you out of the shattered window.\" Amanda stared at him in shock- Tyler had done that, for her?

\"You were unconscious at the time…\" The doctor continued. \"If Tyler had waited for the paramedics to show, it would have been too late.” There was a proud look in the doctors eyes, which confused Marisa. Why would the doctor be that proud of a young man he barely knew?

Marisa was, to put it lightly, stunned. Tyler had put his own life on the line to save hers, when she might have already been dead. Too far in shock to cry any longer, she cried out- “But… he doesn’t know me! He doesn’t even know me!”

Dr. Fimmel nodded, understanding her disbelief. “I’ll leave you alone to dwell on that for a while. You’re going to have to stay here for a couple of days, three at the most, to make sure there wasn’t any significant damage done to the brain that we didn’t find. A formality, really, there is little to no chance of anything being seriously wrong. If there was a problem, you’d either be slurring, repeatedly passing out, completely unconscious, or worse, in a coma. So, at least there’s that.”

Dr. Fimmel left the room, but then walked in again a minute later. “Sorry for intruding again. My son is just leaving the hospital, and he just asked me to give you this note.”

Marisa looked at the doctor, completely confused. He smiled at her warmly, then left again. What did his son have to do with this, and how did he know she existed? She shrugged and read the letter.

Dear Marisa,

I’ve just been told I could go home for now. My dad wants me to stay with him for a few days though, so he can make sure I’m OK and fix the burn stuff at home instead of in the hospital. Helps when your dads a doctor, huh.

From what Amanda told me about you, I pretty much know exactly what you are thinking. Where you are going to live, considering staying with Amanda… isn’t really going to happen?

When you were coming to stay at her home, whether you knew it or not at the time, you were also coming to stay in mine. I know you might find it uncomfortable, living in a house with a stranger, but please know my door is always open to you.

I truly hope that you can find it within yourself to trust me enough to accept my offer, even if it is only because Amanda trusted me enough to accept the same offer in her time of need. Her last house, which I’m sure you remember, was on the beach. The hurricanes we’ve been having recently caused a big enough flood to ruin her home. She was a work colleague of mine, at a local Magazine- I’m sure you know she worked there- I’m the graphics editor. I offered, and she accepted and moved in a few months ago.

Now though, it is you who is in need of assistance, and I hope you allow me to help you in any way possible. Please think about this, and I’ll be there to visit tomorrow. I don’t need a response then, or the next day… I’m not going to pressure you into it. I’m just coming to say hello, and get to know you.

See you then,

Tyler
