Chapter One
gNice weather today, huh?h This was one of my many attempts to strike any kind of conversation.
gHm-Mm.h His responses were never longer than three syllables, at least not in the last month Ifve driven him.
gSo you think you can tell me a little about yourself?h
gNot really.h See, three syllables, I told you.
gOh come on! Ifm always the one whofs talking; donft you get bored?h
gI donft mind.h
The entire time he never averted his gaze off the passing scenery. I couldnft keep staring at him because the car would have crashed by now. I still kept glancing in his direction, hoping to catch something in that impassive face. It didnft matter how many times I looked at him or what I said, he always had the same stoic expression. I knew that he was hiding something, but he just wouldnft offer any information. The rest of the trip was spent in silence just like the many other times Ifd given him rides. He always ended up ruining the mood. Damn, I wish he would at least turn toward me so I can see his face more clearly.
After not more than a ten minute drive, I pulled into the college and he simply got out without a word like it was the most normal thing in the world. But then he bent down before closing the door and in monotone thanked me. I was ready to curse at him but there were people around. Damn him and his cold exterior. Am I that intimidating? I think Ifm pretty good looking and not in the least bit scaryc especially with my infamous heart-melting smile.
Alright, starting tomorrow, Ifm going to work late again. He doesnft need a ride; the weather is fine. Hefll be alright on his own, just like before.

gHey Alex, you want to come out with me tonight? Itfs Friday, we can stay out as late as you want.h
Crap, itfs the bossfs son. I canft refuse him unless I want to risk getting fired. Sure, Ifm the manager, but therefs still someone above me: Mr. Mark Duvall. Hefs a nice enough guy, promoting me so quickly in the last five years. His son on the other hand is a good-for-nothing jerk. Hefs been trying to get me in his bed ever since he first saw me. Damn him, and damn this job. Ifd quit if I didnft need it so badly.
gI have plans tonight. Ifm leaving early and meeting this guy in New York,h I respond quickly. A little too quickly.
gYou always say no. What can I do you to make you say eyesf?h
Nothing! Now shut your trap.
gYou know I already have someone...h I trail off nervously, knowing full well that I donft have anyone.
gSo faithful, Alex. Thatfs what I love about you.h He gave me a quick wink before walking away. Whew, another crisis avoided. Alright, now I just have to leave early to stick to my story.

I saw Daniel again, walking briskly down the street. He didnft hold out his thumb or anything, but I stopped anyway. I couldnft resist. He stopped walking and glanced into the window.
gHey, long time no see. Want to jump in?h
gThanks.h I wonder sometimes if he really is a robot. Everything about him is so methodical from his speech to his walk.
gSo, what are you doing tonight?h I asked, trying to be casual.
gNothing much.h
gWhat do you do at the College?h
He shrugged off the answer like he always does. Suddenly I wanted to just drive him home and tie him up, torture him until he gave me an answer, but I seriously thought he wouldnft tell me even if I did.
gWhere were you?h Did I just hear that? I thought I heard some actual emotion in that voice. Perhaps evenc concern.
gWhat?h
gThe last couple of months,h he trailed off, obvious curiosity in his voice. Wow, okay that was more than three syllables. Are we making progress finally?
gI was working late everyday. Didnft know you were gonna miss me.h I chirped the last sentence and turned my face to flash a smile. He ignored me. Damn him, he asked the question and didnft even listen to the answer!
gTill what time?h What? Whatfs going on here? He was all of a sudden rather affectionatec in a very cold way, but affectionate nonetheless.
gWhy do you want to know?h He shrugged but didnft say anything. I *so* knew that was going to happen. gWell, I close up the place. So around nine-thirty to ten ofclock.h
gDo you want to do something tonight?h Okay, where the hell did that come from? That was definitely not the usual Daniel that I knew for about a month.
gDid you just ask me out?h Finally he turned to look at me. Man, thatfs a lot of progress in one day; I felt like pigs were going fly soon. Maybe even hell had frozen over.
gI asked if you wanted to do something but if you put it that way, then yes.h Okay, this was possibly one of the strangest situations I have ever been in. A Jewish guy that I drove around for the sake of being a good person just asked me out. Doesnft matter whether itfs a date or just a small get together; Ifve never been asked out by a Jew before. Okay, maybe I have, but Daniel is like the most devout person Ifve ever met.
gUm, what are we going to do?h
gI donft know. I just thought I should really thank you before you disappear again.h Oh, so he wasnft making a move on me. Just common courtesy. Good thing he never looked directly at me when he spoke, because my face had disappointment written all over. God, what the hell was I thinking anyway? I donft seriously have a crush on him? Do I?
gI guess Ifve got nothing going on tonight.h Pathetic, I never have anything going on.
gThen can you drop by here,h he hands me a card, gAt around seven thirty and then we can have dinner or something.h
gYeah, sure. Is this where you live?h
gMm-hmm.h Then as suddenly as the conversation started, hefs silent again and back to looking out the window.
A/N: This is a longer chapter. Hope you guys like it so far!
