“Yeah, may—wait. What did you say?”

Lisa gave her a funny look. “I said ‘Maybe someone cast a spell on you’. As a joke. Hate to be cliché, but: you know, ‘ha, ha’?”

Kiera got up and walk out of the room. “Yeah..Heh. This paper is just getting to me, you know?”

“You’re telling me…”

Hmm. Her exact words. Coincidence. Déjà vu. A glitch in the Matrix and all that good stuff. She put it all out of her mind, as she wandered through the small apartment, turning everything off and getting ready for bed.

In her room, Kiera gazed briefly, yet lovingly, at her teddy bear, Julian. His fur was matted in most places, the fuzz had rubbed off almost his entire nose, and his arms were at odd angles from being held and slept on. Still, he was the best looking thing she had seen all day. Probably the only truly faithful man in existence, too. A smile played about her lips. She grabbed the bear and gave him a huge squeeze before pulling back her satin sheets. Her smile grew. She was home.

Everyone had their vices and their havens. Hers just happened to be all in the same place. Her bed, her bear, and her sheets. When she’d gotten her first job, she’d decided that the ceremonial Splurge of the First Paycheck should be spent on satin sheets. Black, of course. Her parents didn’t really understand at the time, nor did they still, but they didn’t chastise her for wasting money. Brownie point for them. Most likely, no one would understand why her bed was, in essence, home, but it was. It was the closest that she would ever come to live out her fantasies. Kiera drifted off, the image of dragons soaring lazily about filling her mind.

She awoke very slowly the next morning, savoring the remnants of her dream last night. Something about dragons, perhaps a few other things. Most likely, she’d remember more in a few hours. A yawn finally forced her to stir. Stretching this way and that, she climbed out of bed, in search of food.

Lisa was just leaving her room, too. Kiera looked over at her friend, still half asleep. “Happy Saturday. Want pancakes?”

“Mmph.”

“Blueberry. Got it,” Kiera grinned, and set about fixing breakfast. “You stayed up most of the night again, huh?”

“Yeah, well. I figured that I may as well bust it out before the other sisters call me to duty again,” she said as she flopped into a chair. “Is there anything going on this weekend? Concerts? Movies? Lynchings?”

Kiera pulled up the edge of a pancake to check the color. “Don’t know about the first two, but we may be able to do something about the last. I volunteer Professor Meat-head!” she said dramatically thrusting her spatula in the air. Lisa laughed. Kiera relaxed her pose slightly, chuckling as well. She turned back to the pan and with an expert flick of the wrist, flipped the pancakes to the uncooked side.

As usual, neither of them waited for the rest of the pancakes to cook. They each grabbed one, and began to eat them like a cookie, plates entirely forgotten. The girls whiled away the rest of the morning, eating their pancakes, and eventually getting around to plates and maple syrup. They laughed, and joked about anything that came to mind. Unconsciously grateful, Kiera put all worries about the previous day out of her mind.

Later that day, Lisa came across an ad in the paper. “Oi! Kiera! Concert tonight, you wanna hit it?” She wandered into Kiera’s room, where her friend was furiously typing away on her computer. Lisa stared a moment, grinning. “Well, I was going to just ask if you wanted to go, but as you’ve been doing this for…” she looked at her watch, ” three and a half hours, I’m not giving you a choice anymore. Get ready. Punk vs. Metal at the Abyss tonight. My treat.”
