CHAPTER 2 What place is this

Disclaimer: - Everything in these pages, I own.

These chapters are under revision. I’m not changing them, just cleaning the dust off a few places. If you had read these when they were posted, I suggest you give them another go. They’ll flow easier. At least, I should hope so. If it’s your first time around, it’s all the better for you. ^_^

July 3, 1999

\"Freak!\" a young man, with blonde hair, shouted as he shoved a young girl’s books to the floor. The girl was petite and very skinny, with pitch-black hair and eyes that, normally the color of stormy skies, were rimmed with tears and were the most brilliant shade of blue anyone had ever seen. Even though it was 80 degrees outside, she wore a deep blue turtleneck sweater, a pair of black jeans and combat boots, all of which had seen better days.

\"Loser\" another young man taunted. At first glance, one would think he was enjoying himself but on a closer look, you’d see the guilt that was pooling in his eyes. He was of average height, fairly muscled, and had brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. The young girl looked at him, knowing better than to bend down to grab her books when so many kids were circling her. There was confusion and betrayal in her eyes as she stared at him from under the mane of her hair. \"Michael\", she breathed softly, knowing no one but him could hear her. At once, the young man grew agitated. ‘What if someone heard her?’ he thought, as he shoved her to the floor.

By now the crowd had dissolved into bedlam with the taunts, kicking and shoving. The young girl just sat there and waited; for what she didn\'t know but she had lived her life long enough to know that no one would save her. Suddenly, someone grabbed one of her books off the ground and threw it at her, hitting her in the stomach. If she hadn\'t already been on the ground she would have fallen from the force with which it had slammed into her. She held her stomach and willed the pain away. She had never cried in front of anyone before and she wasn\'t about to start now.

\"Enough!\" The laughter died down and everything got eerily quiet. The crowd parted for the boy, who had spoken, to pass through. He was a big guy, incredibly built, and ruled the school. He had the same sandy brown hair as the boy Michael did and had the most piercing blue eyes, infamous for changing colors as capriciously as the wind blew.

Surprise, mixed with another emotion no one could quite figure out, showed on the face of the young girl. As the boy walked toward her, she scrambled backwards, fearful. But he just strode towards her with those same measured, careful steps and held out his hand. She looked from the hand, to his face and then back. Her indecision showed plainly on her face. \"Jessi...” he murmured softly and it was the sound of her name on his lips that made her decision. She grasped his hand and he helped her up. He picked up her books, handed them to her and glared at everyone around them.

The blonde haired boy who started it all started laughing and said, \"Well, well, well… looks like Joe has found a new friend to play with. Maybe when you\'re done with her, we can all have a turn.\" Joe\'s normally blue eyes turned green and everyone backed away. Garret, the boy who had spoken, found himself the recipient of that infamous stare and was scared. He then realized with even more fear that Joe had a hold of the front of his shirt and was pushing him, hard and fast, towards the locker. \"I\'m sorry! I\'ll never touch her again. Really man! I\'m sorry\" Garret babbled, as if to ward off the oncoming assault. With a slam, his back hit the lockers and he felt an incredible pressure on his neck where Joe held him against the lockers, a foot off the ground.

\"Really, man! I didn\'t know she was your girl!\" Garret said. \"She\'s not”, said the boy who now had all the power. His eyes slid to the girl’s as he added, his voice dangerously low, \"But she is a girl who deserves respect and you\'ll do well to remember that in the future”. \"Yeah, sure Joe! Whatever you say, Joe\", the boy said nervously. As Joe let him down, the boy made the mistake of uttering, \"you\'re welcome to the whore\". That’s when all hell broke loose. The barely concealed rage that Joe had held in check came boiling to the surface. He smashed his hands repeatedly into Garret\'s body.

The young girl, Jessi, stepped in front of him and tried to grab his arm to stop him. The crowd reacted with awe. Wasn\'t she afraid that she\'d get hit? Joe was notorious for not being able to stop once he started. What they didn\'t know was, she wasn\'t afraid of being hit because she had far worse horrors to worry about. Joe felt her grab his arm but in his rage thought that it was someone else and turned, striking out. His green eyes turned blue again and he stopped just short of punching her in the face.

\"What is going on out here?\" a teacher from a nearby classroom yelled. In an instant the crowd was gone. Only Jessi, Garret, Joe and Michael remained. Garret groaned as he slid to the ground. Blood poured down his face. \"Nothing\", Joe told Mrs. Summers with a smile. \"Just a little misunderstanding. It’s been taken care of”. Joe was a favorite among the teachers, including Mrs. Summers, so she left it at that. \"Well, then you kids need to get to class”. She reached for Jessi\'s arms and the young girl instinctively flinched. Mrs. Summers stopped a sigh from escaping. \"You\'d better go to the nurse, Jessi”, she said, seeing the girl’s black eye from being kicked. \"No!\" the girl exclaimed. \"I mean, ummm… I\'m fine. Really! It\'s just a small bruise” and she took off, running like a bat shot out of hell.

The teacher sighed and shook her head. She turned back to the boys saying, “Get on to class. The tardy bell will ring any minute now”. The boys nodded.

When she walked into the classroom, Joe rounded on Michael and said, \"Little bro, you\'d better have a damn good excuse for what I just saw”. He was deadly quiet, waiting for his brother’s excuse. Michael didn\'t budge. \"What the hell were you thinking?\" Michael whispered quietly, \"What if everyone finds out?\" \"Then they find out\", Joe shrugged. \"But I’ll tell you this just once. If I ever catch you treating her like that again, you’ll be the one lying there\", he said as he pointed at Garret who had passed out. \"Got it?\" he glared at Michael. \"Yes”, Michael sighed, knowing it was useless to argue when he had no chance of winning. Besides, he had to get to class.
