Chapter Two

Xeinthia blew lightly on the tall, narrow glass. Took a long swig from the quadruple espresso. She shook faintly; it was her third round. Grabbing the bar to steady her shaking arm, she glared at her watch. It had only been twenty minutes. Zadah raised a pierced eyebrow at her friend.
\"Are you trying for cardiac arrest?\" She asked rather bluntly.
Xeinthia only gave an obscene form of sign language.
\"You\'re getting decafe, little girl.\" A blue-haired bartender took the now empty glass.
\"You seem like you\'re on a hat kick there, Taboo.\" Zadah looked over the cobalt blue top hat seated on his long curls.
\"Yeah, I don\'t know what it is, I just seem to have woken up one morning and the thought just hit me! Why not throw on a top hat and see if that completes the look? And what do know? It did!\"
\"Taboo, I think you\'re lighting the bar ablaze.\" Xeinthia interjected.
He only stuck out his tongue before moving to another customer.
\"So,\" Zadah absently stirred her drink with its straw. \"It\'s still going to be a while before the backup stuff arrives? What is Aubrey doing until then?\"
\"I don\'t know.\" The younger blond shrugged. \"Taking a nap or something.\"
Zadah turned to Adam. \"Hey,\" Gave him a kiss. \"Go see what Aubie is up to, ok? Drag his microass over here.\"
Adam smiled, rubbed the tip of his nose against hers, \"Ok.\"
\"Get a room.\" Came from Xeinthia.
Adam just winked at her and continued his way, his long tail swaying behind.

\"You know why I\'m here.\" The redhead rose from the bed, stalking over to the musician. She brushed a hand casually over his cheek. Ignored the flinch that came from the small teen. \"Where is he?\"
Aubrey continued to glare. \"Hints naturally repel from you, don\'t they?\"
\"And what do you mean by that?\" She gave a sadistic chortle. \"Little boy.\"
The hybrid took a step back. \"You know, most people take a restraining order as a clue that person isn\'t interested.\" Aubrey\'s hand shook as he reached for a button underneath his vanity desk. \"Some lunatics, take you for instance, seem to interpret that as a sign of affection.\"
He never hit the button. Alania backhanded him, the blow sending him to the opposite wall. Aubrey collided with it hard, sliding with a cry to the concrete floor. Already, a bruise began to mar his cheek. She had taken notice of his actions, and struck him. A tiny crimson line strung from the corner of his mouth as he lay still.
Alania now glared at him. \"Do you really think you\'re that special? I don\'t care what you are. I think you\'re a freak! You are not going to discourage me or my actions. You can\'t keep me from Adam.\"
Aubrey trembled violently, tried to rise to his feet. A swift kick to his stomach soon reintroduced him to the floor. A sob fled the teen\'s bleeding lips.
\"What\'s wrong, you queer?\" She gave another kick. \"Your mouth isn\'t helping you now, is it?\"
Tears streamed down Aubrey\'s face, his eyes widened as he heard a sharp crack from his own body. I can\'t breathe. She\'s going to kill me this time! \"Help me.\" A gasped brought up a drop of blood. He took a deep, shuddering breath, broken glass tearing into his chest. \"Someone help me!\"

Adam froze, his heart feeling as if it jumped into his throat. He hastened his pace, almost crashing into Aubrey\'s dressing room door. He made a fist, pounded on the door so hard it shook. \"Aubrey!\"
His friend screamed again, \"Get Zadah! NOW!\"
Another sound came from the room. Followed by a distinct \"Shut up!\"
Adam ran, repressing the urge to kill the familiar assailant with his own hands.

The catboy\'s breath came in rasps as he plowed his way through the dance floor. Nearly tripping several times, he ignored some shouts directed at him. Scanned the room for any sign of either Zadah or Xeinthia. Yet he found no sign them.
\"Zadah!\"
He yelped as a hand caught his wrist tightly. Zadah pulled him to her. \"What\'s wrong?\"
\"It\'s Aubrey. SHE\'S with him.\"
\"What?!\"
Zadah didn\'t wait for a response. She started towards the back rooms.
Furious, she kicked the door, her mind far from the concept of property damage. The thin, cheap wood splintered and ripped. It swung open, then tilted from being torn from the frame. Adam flew in, cradled a beaten Aubrey. Zadah watched as his small shoulders wrack with sobs, her boyfriend comforting his trembling body.
\"Adam.\" Was all Alania said.
Adam glared at her. \"I hate you.\" Was all he said.

\"You know you\'re not welcome here.\" It took all of Zadah\'s self control not to break Alania\'s neck. Instead, she pulled Aubrey up into her arms as if he weighed barely a thing. His body was limp, his head swayed back, a look of pained sleep on his baby face. He has lost his grip on consciousness.
Adam stood. \"I think he needs to go to the hospital.\" He kept glaring at Alania. \"He will be pressing charges. I will personally see to that.
\"As for you, Alania, I\'ve informed you many times I have wished for nothing to do with you. Even after going through the inconvenience of getting a restraining order, you still seem to find ways to harass me. However, harming one of my closest friends is just going way too far this time! For the final time, Alania! Stay away from me!\"
\"Adam . . .\" She reached out to the catboy.
\"Don\'t you dare touch him!\" Zadah injected, her voice nearly a snarl.
Adam grasped Zadah\'s arm. \"We need to go.\"

Hovering hundreds of feet above the Earth, a pink car wove its way through the city. To anyone who would have been in the passenger seat, it was obvious the driver wasn\'t in a good mood. Of course, for someone who\'s partner and best friend was just beaten unconscious, she was doing pretty good. Seeing that she didn\'t do anything that resulted in the need to bail money. Now on her way to the hospital, she was feeling quite livid. To the point someone would almost feel sorry for the poor bastard on the other side of her ringing cell phone. A dainty hand manicured in fusca hit a button next to her radio.
\"What do you want?\"
There was a moment\'s pause, a faint breath over the car\'s speakers. \"Xeinthia?\"
She rolled her eyes. \"Do you think I\'d be unselfish enough to let someone else drive my baby?\" She flicked on her directional. \"This isn\'t a social call, so get to the point, or this isn\'t going to be your night.\"
\"Do not take that tone with me, young lady.\" The voice of a middle-aged man speared out. \"I just received a call from the manager, and I\'m none too pleased. What was a woman doing backstage?\"
\"Admiring your security. Or lack thereof.\"
\"Now you listen to-\"
\"Me.\" She interjected. \"Your lax security, thought it need not be said, after many warnings, has led to your star performer in the ER. As it is now, you may have a pending lawsuit, numerous angry staff, not to mention a large chunk of your clientele, your profits out in the firing range. So let\'s play nice shall we? I\'m a pissed off dyke with your balls in my hands, and let\'s just say I\'ve never been gentle with my toys.\" She smirked at the silence. \"Any questions?\"

The silence of the hospital room was occasionally interrupted by a rhythmic beep of a heart-monitor. It was clamped onto Aubrey\'s right index finger, further up in his inner elbow was a saline iv. An hour ago a nurse had injected a painkiller/sedative in the bag, which was now nearly empty.
Adam sat next to Zadah, his head resting on her shoulder. His eyes kept avoiding the older man seated on the other side of Aubrey\'s bed. Restlessly, his hands fidgeted with his long hair, aimless twirling in his shaking hands.
\"You know, Adam, this isn\'t your fault.\" Mr. Kalas spoke, staring at the boy through square lenses. \"I know you\'re blaming yourself, but you can\'t control what others do. What\'s important right now is that little Aubrey is safe and not seriously hurt.\"
Still, his dark violet eyes refused to look up. \"She was looking for me.\"
Sighing, Mr. Kalas shook his head. \"I\'m going to get some caffeine. Zadah, would you like something?\"
\"Just some coffee, thanks.\" Zadah stroked Adam\'s hair, eyes still locked on Aubrey.
\"You, Adam.\"
He snuggled in Zadah. \"Ginger ale, if they have any. No diet.\"
\"Sure.\" As he walked by, he ruffled Adam\'s hair.
A minute after the door shut, Aubrey\'s eyes began to reopen.
Adam jumped up from his chair. \"Aubrey?\"
The singer turned his head. \"Adam? Zadah?\" He blink, his eyes struggling to focus.
\"Are you ok?\" Adam grabbed hold of his outstretched hand.
\"I . . .\" Aubrey voice was like a spider\'s web. \"I\'m tired. . . but I\'ll live.\" Shaking, he attempted to sit up.
\"Don\'t!\" Zadah gently pushed him back into the pillows. \"You need to rest.\"
\"What time is it?\"
\"Almost one o\'clock.\"
\"Oh.\" He yawned, fighting to stay awake. \"You should be home. I don\'t want either of you to miss school because of me.\"
Adam kissed his forehead. \"Don\'t be foolish. I can afford to miss a day. Don\'t stress yourself over me; I know how your nature is. Remember how long we\'ve known each other?\"
\"I do.\" He grinned. \"Which is why I know this is so the pot calling the kettle.\" He squeezed Adam\'s hand. \"Kettlehead.\"
\"Love you, Aubie.\"
\"Love you, Addy.\"
With that, Aubrey fell back asleep.

Only four blocks down, the towering police station\'s doors opened. A red haired girl left their custody, still rubbing her wrists from the all-but-delicate handcuffs. Frowning in anger, she stopped in front of a large, white American car. The back window rolled down.
\"What have I told you before, Alania.\" A male voice from the car asked.
\"Don\'t get caught.\" She replied, disgruntled. Then stormed off to her towed car cursing ahead of schedule for any potential dents and/or scratches.

At noon the next day, Aubrey was finally released from the hospital. Much to the collective disappointment of some of the flirtatious nurses. In the car, Aubrey held a paper stating that although he was in good health, he was not to perform for a few days. He was very dejected from the news. Halfway during the trip, Xeinthia made sure, between Adam\'s constant \"are you ok?\"s from the backseat, that he was well aware of his involuntary vacation.
\"We\'re home.\" Xeinthia unbuckled, eyeing Aubrey.
Like Adam, Aubrey lived in the wooded outskirts of the city. His home was three floors, the third being just his modestly sized bedroom. The house itself was an unconventional octagon shape, and its outside was a dark tank stained wood. If someone could see the resemblance of a lighthouse, it was because it was the inspiration his architect father used to build it. There was only one other car in the large driveway at the moment, it was a silver sports model with two doors and streaks of ever-changing color running through the sides and over the hood.
Ferio was home.
Aubrey eyed the car as he stepped out of the pink car. He wasn\'t in the mood to be further fussed over, let alone babied incessantly. Maybe if I sneak in back, he won\'t know I\'m home.
\"Aubrey!\" A male voice called from the front door.
Too late.
A man who appeared to be in his late teens cantered off the front deck, dressed in sweat pants and a t-shirt, looking like he just had a run. To see him one couldn\'t say they were not related. Ferio had the same black hair and amber-brown eyes as Aubrey, but he stood much taller and was of burly build.
\"Oniisan, what are you doing home?\" Aubrey braced himself mentally.
\"Semester\'s finished.\" He set a long hand on the roof of Xeinthia\'s car. \"What are you doing home already? Shouldn\'t you be in the hospital?\"
\"You know?\"
\"Yes! I was about to shower and visit you. What was the doctor thinking, sending you home this early?\"
\"I\'m fine, really, Oniisan it\'s not like I\'m going to die next week.\" Aubrey shook his head, headed toward the house. And was stopped as Ferio lifted him into his well-muscled arms. \"Oniisan!\"
\"Don\'t argue with me, Aubrey.\" He paused, turned to Xeinthia and Adam \"You two are more than welcome to come inside.\"
\"Um... sure.\" Adam looked to Xeinthia, then both followed.

Monday came much sooner than anyone would have wanted. Zadah sat on one of the tall barstool at a black counter in Adam\'s kitchen, sipping a black coffee. She watched bemused as her beau once again had the task of taking little Caleb to daycare. Smiled as he affectionately brushed the toddler\'s strawberry blond hair, parting it gingerly around his tiny cat ears.
Caleb looked up at her, giggling and clapping his tiny hands together. \"I go school!\"
\"Yes, you\'re going to school like a big boy.\" Adam replied, securing the buckles to the three-year-old\'s overalls. \"And we\'re going to ride with Zadah-Chan.\"
Zadah raised an eyebrow. \"Zadah-Chan? You\'ve been around Aubrey too long.\"
Adam stood up, slung Caleb\'s bag over his shoulder. \"Speaking of Aubrey, remember he\'s riding with us this morning. I don\'t want him driving to school in his condition.\"
\"You can be such a mother at times.\" She kissed his forehead. \"It\'s adorable.\"
\"I try.\" He took Caleb\'s hand. \"It\'s really all just part of my plot to take over the world, you know. Tyranny through cuteness.\"
Twenty minutes later, Zadah\'s two-door car was stopped in front of the New Manhattan School of the Arts. Adam pulled down the front seat, Aubrey climbed out. Leaning over in the front, Adam kissed Zadah.
\"I\'ll see you later.\" He kissed her again. \"Thank you for the ride.\"
\"Anytime sweetie.\" Zadah rubbed his chin.
\"Diabetic coma! I\'m going to loose that damn instant breakfast crap.\" Came a cry from Aubrey.
They laughed.
\"Give him a spanking for me.\" Zadah called out of the car as the catboy climbed out.
\"I will.\" He winked.
