Chapter 2

It’s only a short skate to the mall from Raleigh's house. When he arrives at the mall, he stops at a near bench and removes the skates. As he is stuffing the skates into his backpack he is approached by a girl in a black leather skirt with black camisole leaving her midriff exposed, there is a red jeweled curved barbell through her navel,

“You got a smoke?” she asks flicking her long dyed black hair back,

“No sorry, I don't smoke,” Raleigh turns his attention back to his shoes,

“Cool, neither do I,” she steps closer to him,

“Then why did you ask?” Raleigh looks at her puzzled,

“I find it can be a great ice breaker, so what’s your name,”

“Raleigh,”

“Raleigh, that's a cute name, I'm Bethany,” she extends her hand, he hesitantly shakes it,

“So Bethany why are you so interested in me?”

“What? A girl can’t talk to a cute guy?” Raleigh lowers his face back to his shoes more to hide the burning heat building in his cheeks,

“I don't see why not,” he tries to save face,

“So what brings you to the mall?”

“Shopping what else?” she giggles at his remark,

“Yeah but what are you shopping for?”

“The new Screeching Elbows CD is out,”

“Oh my god you like them too? I thought I was the only one,” she sits beside him on the bench, “Hey, that’s a cute backpack,”

“Thanks,” Raleigh gets up from the bench and enters the mall; Bethany quickly follows him,

“Mind if I tag along?”

“Knock yourself out,” Raleigh is getting a little annoyed at her, he’s not sure why, just figures she has ulterior motives, Raleigh heads straight to the music store and heads for the new releases, he grabs the CD he’s looking for and checks the tracks on the back. Bethany follows his actions, Raleigh turns towards the register the chains rattle against his legs, Raleigh pays for the CD and leaves the store, Bethany hops out in front of him,

“Hey you want to get some coffee or something?” he figures that maybe she’ll leave him alone if he accepts,

“Sure,” she grabs his wrist and leads him to her favorite little diner to get coffee; they sit at a booth and wait for the server, after a little over a minute the server arrives,

“What can I get you?”

“Coffee,” Bethany says as if it is her lifeblood,

“Can I get a cup of half and half?” Raleigh says sheepishly, despite his mostly human appearance he likes to indulge his feline side,

“Sure hon, that everything?”

“Yep,” Bethany says brightly,

“Yeah,” Raleigh sighs, once the server steps away Bethany giggles,

“I can’t believe you ordered just cream, I thought that was just a stereotype,” Raleigh shrugs,

“What can I say I like it,” the server comes back with two coffee cups one with coffee one with cream,

“Thanks” they say unison, Bethany cradles the mug in her hands savoring the aroma, Raleigh finally notices just how cute she really is. He was still rather pissed from what his stepfather did; he rubs at his ear where he grabbed him before. Raleigh wets his lips and takes the first sip of his cream, he closes his eyes letting the smooth texture roll over his tongue, Bethany giggles again,

“So what’s your favorite Screeching Elbows song?” she says taking a sip of her coffee, Raleigh takes a moment to think,

“Well I guess that would have to be ‘I Hate You More Than Life’”

“Why?” he looks into her deep green eyes they are brimming with curiosity, he takes a breath,

“Cause it’s kind of how I feel about my stepdad,”

“Divorce?” she asks the one word question,

“Yeah, well kind of, my real dad just took off one day, leaving me, mom and Brie I can understand why she would remarry I was even happy with it at first but the way he treats all of us…” he trails off, “Well needless to say she could have done a hell of a lot better than him,”

“Yeah my parents got divorced two years ago, he moved out to California, midlife crisis I think,”

“That sucks,” Bethany shrugs,

“I guess, all I know is that when special occasions come around they fight for my affection with expensive stuff,”

“Must be nice,”

“It’s okay sometimes, you should see who my dad hooked up with in Cali’ I swear if she has any original flesh on her I'm the queen of France,”

“I don't think France has a queen anymore,” Raleigh retorts,

“’Xactly” Raleigh laughs lightly, and takes another sip of his cream,

“Could you excuse me for a minute?”

“Sure,” she waves him off with her hand, Raleigh goes to the bathroom, he checks his face and hair in the mirror, he runs the cold water for a moment letting it get truly cold, he splashes water on his face and rubs some on the back of his neck, she’s giving him butterflies in his stomach and they only just met, at first she was an annoyance now he was beginning to like her.
